kodisha··on Quake 1 gets its first major co-op content update in 25 years
Yes, anyone can learn quake enough to run trough the levels and kill some bots.

Good luck trying to do same vs online players, at this point everyone in Q1 community has been playing it for 10+ years, some of them even more. It would take you 6+ months of hard grind to start winning against low tier players (given that you have talent for AFPS games)

kodisha··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
Tho this might be true, I wonder how would one utilize this technique?

For example, if you have someone who is total avaxx, how should you make him feel in order to change his mind?

kodisha··on Serbia surveillance law urgently withdrawn
There are different kinds of dictatorships.

Serbia is externally sponsored one. Angela Merkel visited just recently, and EU, on paper gives support. In exchange Vucic is doing whatever is needed, and they look the other way while he does his moves.

OCCASIONALLY he oversteps his limitations, and his sponsors give him slap on the wrist.

kodisha··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
I was referring to this:

> I had a similar interview with a different company last year. Three guys and me on a Zoom call with me sharing my screen trying to solve a coding problem that in no way resembled anything I have ever encountered in my 25 year career. When I got stuck they just stared at me. They would not give me any hints whatsoever. They just stared at me.

kodisha··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
Not sure about English, but in my language we have a saying "The fish stinks from the head"

I can tell you, with quite substantial sample size from me directly and from people I deeply trust that every time we encountered an interview like this, we later found out that the company culture was really bad.

Those are not the kind of people you want to work with.

kodisha··on Tell HN: YouTube is asking for age verification to watch Bret Weinstein's video
Ye, good luck trying to sell/trade your crypto without verifying your self with a photo of your face + passport or driver's license.

So, I've submitted same news hours earlier (from official 2600 mag twitter account) but my submission was flagged and locked for comments.

kodisha··on Raspberry Pi Server Mark III
I'm just trying to understand the power of those machines compared to the only piece of equipment I daily use and can compare to.

I know it can be like comparing apples to oranges but I was just curious how fast this can be.

kodisha··on Raspberry Pi Server Mark III
How "fast" and "strong" can those servers be?

Compared to something we all know, e.g. MBP 16" 2019, how does this rack of Raspberry Pi's stack up?

kodisha··on AirPods Max
Wouldn't that require that music producers start producing music in spatial audio in the first place, no?

And what would their incentive for something like that be?

kodisha··on It’s good for users that HTML, CSS and JS are separate languages
I was the biggest advocate of this approach.

Then, by chance I landed flutter/dart side project.

The power of language where you can mix business logic in presentation files is awesome. You can include your own or 3rd party clients and get full autocomplete and type safety.

The styling did feel awkward at first, but even I, being the first time developer managed to create pixel perfect replica of whatever crazy widget style our designer came up with. And using cols/rows made it easy to make app look good on variety of screen sizes.

I hope that in some moment in time we get same experience for the web, and I encourage more people to try flutter/dart, you migh be pleasantly surprised.

kodisha··on CAPTCHAs don’t prove you’re human – they prove you’re American (2017)
Nope, the entire laptop was dead. Booted into some black screen of death, with glitches.

I never saw something like that before or after that.

kodisha··on CAPTCHAs don’t prove you’re human – they prove you’re American (2017)
Around 2015, or so I was visiting Boston during some really cold winter (was -10 outside)

We were at the office, went out to wait for a bus, waited for 15 minutes, and since it was freezing we decided to go back inside and get uber/taxi.

I pulled my laptop out of the backpack, tried to turn it on - it was dead.

Honestly, I can't keep up with acquisitions, full e2e encryption claims, then those claims get debunked, and you can't find out what the truth is.

kodisha··on Show HN: Quake 1 movement physics reinforcement learning project
Prepare for something awesome

Human run [1] vs scripted bot run [2].

This is from DFWC, a race series that takes place every second year, and using modified Q3 engine.

There are 5-7 maps per season, and people race from start to finish, and best time wins.

Also, each round there is scripted run, to show how far you could push the engine physics, if you had inhuman reflexes. Highly recommend browsing entire YT channel, it's really awesome, if you ever played Q3!

I see that many people are asking for examples.

Zalando is doing this for couple of years now, you can look at their talk [1] where they describe how they use this pattern + some open source libs for composing those UI components [2]
