It is about scientists as in "let's publish a paper" vs. engineers as in "let's ship a product".

klft··on Can LLMs learn from a single example?
GPT-4 (I haven't really tested other models) is surprisingly adept at "learning" from examples provided as part of the prompt. This could be due to the same underlying mechanism.

klft··on AMD's 7900 XTX achieves better value for Stable Diffusion than Nvidia RTX 4080
> Using Microsoft Olive and DirectML instead of the PyTorch pathway results in the AMD 7900 XTX going form a measly 1.87 iterations per second to 18.59 iterations per second!

So the headline should be Microsoft Olive vs. PyTorch and not AMD vs. Nvidia.

klft··on Happiness is a reward from our ancestors
Fig 2 of [1] shows high variance of happiness while income variation has only a small effect. There is roughly a 5 % (percent it is?) happiness delta for an income delta of about $ 500.000. However, the happiness delta between the different happiness levels is about 25 %.

Would “Income and emotional well-being: It doesn’t really matter” be a better title for the study? Or do I miss something?

klft··on Show HN: Prisma Python – A fully typed ORM for Python
My understanding is that this is exactly what SQLModel adds on top of SQLAlchemy.

statement = select(Hero).where(Hero.age > 32).limit(3)

But I am only halfway through the tutorial so I might be wrong.

klft··on Show HN: Prisma Python – A fully typed ORM for Python
Seems to solve the same problem as SQLModel.

From [1]: "SQLModel is a library for interacting with SQL databases from Python code, with Python objects. It is designed to be intuitive, easy to use, highly compatible, and robust.

SQLModel is based on Python type annotations, and powered by Pydantic and SQLAlchemy."

klft··on Run Your Home on a Raspberry Pi
The Book "Control Your Home with Raspberry Pi" by Koen Vervloesem is excellent imho. His approach centers around mqtt and he shows how to connect ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth and 433.92 MHz devices. He is very into security, showing how all communication is secured via TLS. He also shows how to setup VPN so you can access your home automation system securely from outside.
