kioleanu··on WordPress.org's latest move involves taking control of a WP Engine plugin
They should do that for all plugins that do it then, if it’s reasonable, right? Which is a lot of plugins.

PS: isn’t WooCommerce doing the exact same?

kioleanu··on WordPress Alternatives
It gets weird hate because it has (had?) an insanely steep learning curve and no setup looked like the other. With wordpress at least, it's pretty consistent across plugins and implementations and very easy to pick up
kioleanu··on Google Will Track Your Location 'Every 15 Minutes'–'Even with GPS Disabled'
We had the same experience with the Xplora watches: we moved 6km away and took the internet contract with us. Whenever the watch was inside the house, it would show it as being at the old address. Outside of he house and away from wifi, it showed the location correctly. I imagine this is an edge case
kioleanu··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2024)
Aren’t you the guys who had core hours deep into the evening for your Romanian colleagues but not for yourselves? Hello again!
kioleanu··on Bop Spotter
Shazam is not illegal in Germany unless I missremember what the app does and instead of being to identify songs based on samples, it's being used to record people
kioleanu··on Bop Spotter
I recommend you sit this one out, as recording people, even if only audio and sending the sound over the internet is very much against the law in germany
kioleanu··on Ask HN: What's Your Experience with eSIMs?
I had to get an eSIM for my watch - it's also from O2, but in Germany. It's basically a copy of the physical SIM I have in my phone and it worked perfectly. My only bother is that they charge me 15 euros activation fee everytime I reset my watch. I can't set it on the watch without activating it, even if it's activated
kioleanu··on Building a Local Perplexity Alternative with Perplexica, Ollama, and SearXNG
yes but with the observation that it also interprets your query beforehand and searches based on the interpreted string. It has increased my google/fu ten-fold
kioleanu··on Let's Stop Asking "Why Do You Want to Work for Us?" In Interviews
I personally don't do ecommerce and everything vice-related, including gambling. But I can't go to the interview and say: well I've picked you because you're not doing ecommerce and gambling.
kioleanu··on Let's Stop Asking "Why Do You Want to Work for Us?" In Interviews
hmm, yeah, well I sorted by salary, proximity and my skills and uhm, yeah, your company came up. Oh, sorry, I mean I really believe in your product and my grandma and I have been using it for 15 years and I want to make a change in the world and Forketyfork Inc. works on exactly that.
kioleanu··on 2.6M Piracy Reports Against French Users Resulted in 234 Financial Penalties
watching the german law subreddit, they have started taking people to court now, as too many have caught on to the scheme. In court, like you said, the odds really are as good as tossing a coin.
kioleanu··on 2.6M Piracy Reports Against French Users Resulted in 234 Financial Penalties
why would they buy logs from your ISP when they can see your IP address when you're seeding? they just have someone watching the seeders lists and pick out german IPs (or maybe it's even automatic!) and then they ask the ISP who owns the IP

Buying internet logs might also be highly illegal in the EU, but IANAL

kioleanu··on Your Phone, Minus the Distractions
You can have it on DnD and still allow calls though. I have the same on iPhone but 1 contact (my wife)is whitelisted and I always get notifications from her and _all_ calls go through because I never know from which number they call from the bank or school
kioleanu··on Alarms in medical equipment
Only very slightly tangential, I remember when my son had his surgery and had to be in the hospital, they would have these dosing machines for the medicine and they would start throwing a warning sign 3 minutes before the syringe was empty, every 30 seconds and then a proper alarm when it was empty. Now, we were supposed to call a nurse to remove the syringe, and each nurse had their own preference on when to be called. Some said call us when the warning starts, some said call us a minute before and some said call us when the red alarm goes off. We found this strange until one of them explained it is simply related to the amount of chit chat they wanted to do with us, as the syringe always had to go out at the red alarm
kioleanu··on German public broadcasters open source their streaming platforms
As a loophole, they ended up making the app paid as not constitute disloyal competition, which, depending on the angle makes sense: you have a competitor that you can actually never compete because regardless of what they do, their funding never runs out. It’s not a fair battle. On the other hand tho, wetter online were crying like little kids about an app that was doing what a government was supposed to do.

kioleanu··on Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update will not be moving forward
I get a DRM Warning from Steam directly also when I visit the page, just not in red
kioleanu··on Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update will not be moving forward
when I log in into the EA Client, it says that my account is banned, but I still see the game and I can start it. Any other function is disabled. Is that not working for you?
kioleanu··on Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update will not be moving forward
I have no words to describe how much I hate this. I bought a game recently, It Takes Two, also from Steam and I had to create an EA Account in order to be able to start this OFFLINE game.

I didn't want to give my infos to EA, so I used an alias adress from Fastmail. I linked the game to the account and, a couple of days later, EA suddenly banned my account, with the game still on it :). Obviously no reason given

They said I can still play what I purchased tho, but that really turned me off from the game.

kioleanu··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
Oh no, we have the exact same definition and honestly I find it obscene that the UK office, assuming you, gets to end the day at a decent 5PM while colleagues towards the east have to completely sacrifice 5 evenings a week.

I don’t even want to go into that last sentence.

If you are true about caring about people’s work life balance (which doesn’t seem to be the case), there is only one option: core hours in the middle of the work day. This way you accommodate both people who are early risers and the ones that start up later in the day.

kioleanu··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
Those are some really bad core hours - what gives? Having to mandatory work until 18 (in Germany) or 19 (Romania) sounds like a nightmare in terms of work life balance/family life.
kioleanu··on Empty S.F. office tower formerly valued at $62M sold for $6.5M
it's just water and gas Michael, how much could it cost?
kioleanu··on Wayfair fired a bunch of people again today, after using them to train AI
Oh yes, Wayfair. In this case I’m pretty sure AI will be an improvement. Their customer support was abysmal. I needed to send a package back, they sent a company to get it and then refused to refund me because they somehow lost a piece of furniture and it never arrived.

I sent them the documents showing that the package was collected and then came a reply if I could check the apartment better, maybe I’ll end up finding the missing piece of furniture

kioleanu··on German credit agency earns millions through unlawful customer manipulation
The free report is the list of entries they have on your name. Based on that they calculate scores and risks, but you don’t have access to those numbers unless you pay.

They did buy an app last year called Bonify that allows you to see your credit score for free. There was a hilarious scandal last year as a security expert was able to get some high politicians credit score through the app and they shut the app down for a few days so this doesn’t get exploited

kioleanu··on German credit agency earns millions through unlawful customer manipulation
I use Klarna (albeit rarely) to only pay _after_ any returns are completed and only the amount I need. Not pay upfront and then wait good know how long for three online shop to return my money. I always pay well before the deadline.

My bank just scraped virtual cards and I use them for online payments so I wanted to use Klarna as a virtual card. Went through the whole process only for it to fail at the end with Klarna saying that they can’t generate that card, but I should go talk to Schufa or Arvato about it.

So, not all use cases are bad and Schufa should distinguish between them.

kioleanu··on German credit agency earns millions through unlawful customer manipulation
Schufa for buying stuff and Schufa for banks are two different branches, meaning that if I buy something with Klarna, they’ll query a Wchufa service for online purchases. A bank credit will query another service from Schufa, which probably tells them what other loans I have and will put a huge dent in the score

kioleanu··on It Is Somebody's Moral Imperative to Leak "Coyote vs. Acme" to the World
I had a small business in Germany which I never managed to get off the ground and turned a loss three years in a row.

And every year I would do a tax return saying “hey, this is what I spent, this is what I earned” and every year they would give back to me about a quarter of what I was in the negative with.

I always saw this as a “hey we’re in it together, thanks for trying” and motivated me to try harder or try again

I only own one game and it's offline, so there's that
kioleanu··on A practical guide to quitting your smartphone
I had this exact problem and I found an app called ScreenZen, which is built on top of Screentime in iOS and you can use it to block specific sites and apps pretty effectively. It just minimizes the app and doesn't let you access it.

I am now using it to easy off some sites and I've set a couple of 7 minutes sessions per day and I've limited my time time considerably in the last month

kioleanu··on Trello Allegedly Breached
I use Fastmail for that and without noticing, I'm to 32 "fake" addresses. Got banned by EA for buying and playing a game with an account on such an address.
