kilbuz··on Americans are on the move, but their stuff doesn’t always follow
Twin Cities in MN (Minneapolis and St. Paul).

If you can handle or even enjoy the winters, it's about as perfect a place as you can choose.

Madison, WI also for something a bit smaller, but similar vibes.

kilbuz··on Ask HN: How do I learn more about entrepreneurship/startups?

kilbuz··on Nonnative English speakers share their gripes about speaking English
I think a lot of the usage you reference is blindly picked up in corporate environments, and has little to do with trying to 'sound smart'. My wife laughs at my vocabulary on my Zoom calls. After listening to myself, I have to agree.
kilbuz··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
A small collection of mechanical wristwatches. There is something very appealing about rejecting the wearing of a screen on one's arm. Not to mention they are beautiful.

For tech, a Nintendo Switch.

kilbuz··on Tracking the San Francisco Tech Exodus
Everyone misses the SF of their youth. As will current residents.
kilbuz··on Game developers sharing their salaries on Twitter
I love levels but the self-selecting group who reports their comp there cannot be used to reliably estimate the average, since they are not a random sample. I would guess propensity to report is correlated with higher TC.
kilbuz··on Some thoughts on the $660k copy of Super Mario Bros
Can confirm that mechanical wristwatches have experienced the same. Some MSRP $20k watches can resell for over $100k currently. Pokemon cards, watches, comics, video games, NFTs, houses, yachts, all are very hard to buy right now, even for the wealthy (because of bidding wars and limited supply). Lots of money sloshing around.
kilbuz··on Coinbase from YC to DPO
Getting closer to infinity every day.
kilbuz··on Technical interview methods pale in comparison to playing Factorio with someone
How well does Factorio performance correlate with job performance over different periods of time and different employee backgrounds?

I don't see this mentioned in the article.

kilbuz··on Silicon Valley firms in no hurry to open up offices despite easing of virus ban

kilbuz··on Adobe will end support for Brackets on September 1, 2021
Yes, ColdFusion was the Allaire brothers. J.J. now does RStudio.
kilbuz··on Ask HN: Remote workers in a non-tech city, what's your experience?
What's not believable about that? High or low?
kilbuz··on Twitter acquires Revue
They do appear on the mobile app. One person out of the hundreds I follow uses them, so therefore I am reminded that they exist, even though I never watch them. If that person happened to stop creating them, I would not know what they are or that they exist.
kilbuz··on Average Rent in San Francisco Has Dropped $1k This Year
Why do you think people choose to do it?
kilbuz··on Magician-turned-mathematician uncovers bias in coin flipping (2004)
When you flip a coin, it is either heads side up or tails side up as it rests on your thumb. This initial position may slightly affect how it ultimately lands.
kilbuz··on Joining Apple 40 years ago
As a former resident, you're not mentioning the elephant in the room -- October - May. I grew up in the Midwest, so I get it, it doesn't seem that bad. But after moving away, it's hard to imagine going back, or convincing others to overlook it.
kilbuz··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
Exactly. No one was starting companies in the Bay Area because of how inexpensive it was.
kilbuz··on Am I Disabled?
Agree completely, no way to live. It was not sustainable, and only required after my job switched locations. I was working on alternative arrangements, but COVID gave me that.
kilbuz··on Am I Disabled?
Four hours seems like a realistic estimate for daily commute time for a SF <-> SV round-trip pre-COVID, especially on public transit. I did the same, it was 3-3.5 hours by car, and 4 by MUNI/Caltrain/Shuttle. If I lived closer to Caltrain in the city, it would have helped a lot.
kilbuz··on Tech elites leaving San Francisco threaten Silicon Valley's supremacy
And the family, which is maybe the biggest draw for many of us.

The more I think about it, the more I realize the choice of where you live is barely rational, if at all. Sure we come up with reason about why we are where we are post hoc, but are those the real reasons?

I can almost guarantee I will never move to DC or Virginia. Not because it isn't an amazing place with everything you can want, but because it's just not me for some reason that's hard to articulate. I would guess you would almost guarantee you'd never move to CA, too.

kilbuz··on Tech elites leaving San Francisco threaten Silicon Valley's supremacy
For me (in SF): climate that matches what I want perfectly. The option for snow or beaches on the same day. The food, the diversity, the grittiness, the jobs, the history. And all my family lives here, too. The biggest one of all: walkability, never having to get in my car unless I want to leave the city.

Where did you end up moving that you found a better fit for yourself?

kilbuz··on Tech elites leaving San Francisco threaten Silicon Valley's supremacy
Always have to ask, where are you moving and why did you pick it?
kilbuz··on R adds native pipe and lambda syntax
To define a new binary operator in R (which are just functions), it must be between % characters.

%>% does not mean anything in base R.

kilbuz··on What changes when you work outside an office?
I've heard this sentiment from several friends:

It's not working from home, it's living at work.

kilbuz··on Would you be willing to fund a Linux port to Apple Silicon?
Eyeball count matters a lot.
kilbuz··on Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism
It's possible you're weighting the events of 2020 far too heavily. See Lindy effect.
kilbuz··on Pfizer submits Covid vaccine to FDA for approval, to distribute in December
I have never personally seen a randomized study with anywhere near 40k+ participants for any cardiology or cancer-related treatment. Recruitment for this vaccine trial is much easier than studies with specific conditions like heart attack, stroke, or cancers, simply due to their incidence rates. In cardiology, a 20k subject study is massive in scale.

All this to say that for the pivotal phase 3 trials submitted to FDA for approval, I would suppose almost all existing drugs had much fewer than 40k participants.

kilbuz··on Intermittent fasting increases hippocampal neurogenesis in mice
Definitely not. Nutrition and dietary studies are famously hard to draw any solid conclusions from due to the logistical challenges of performing quality studies (randomization, blinding, "placebo" effects, adherence, follow-up, ...). Additionally, do we assume these effects are consistent for everyone, or certain age groups, genetic markers, ethnicities, etc. Even within individuals, would effects be beneficial for the whole lifetime?

It seems balance and "do what works for you" would be the recommendation.

kilbuz··on Which Cities Have the Highest Risk of a Housing Bubble?
NYC is NYC. There is an army of wealth who would never suffer the loss of caste incurred by leaving.
kilbuz··on Surviving Disillusionment
This is wonderful, thank you for sharing it. Were there any obvious differences between the two camps in terms of performance, career satisfaction, tenure at the company, etc?
