kilbuz··on The Real Luxuries In Life
Agree with all , but I am not ashamed to admit that some material goods bring me immense pleasure, especially mechanical watches and vintage cars.
kilbuz··on Midjourney Medical
false positives are a real problem
kilbuz··on The great software quality collapse or, how we normalized catastrophe
This is exactly the right way to think about it.
kilbuz··on Joint Book Review: Class, by Paul Fussell
A classic if there ever was one, have read several times and will do again. After reading, I self-identify as high-prole.
kilbuz··on A Tongue-in-Cheek Look Back at Broderbund's 'The Print Shop'
I remember the Print Shop as a kid! Yah I guess specialization won out. We don't even have to see our holiday cards now. Upload a photoshopped picture and mail merge and start getting compliments from friends and family a week later.
kilbuz··on Watch carved from meteorite that hit Earth a million years ago
wait do you have one of the 12 Cellini Principias?
kilbuz··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
You don't start there, but you can get there as you level up. A lot of that would be because the stock on your RSU grants goes up while you work there though. I don't think many SWE have 7 figure targeted comp (highest levels, yes). But plenty get there with refreshers and stock appreciation.
kilbuz··on Data will not tell you what to do
Much of A/B testing is far deeper than the color of buttons.

How much faster can we process payments through provider A versus B in different countries around the world?

If we offer insurance after checkout, do we convert more than offering it before?

What ranking algorithm of skus leads to the highest conversion?

kilbuz··on Sora: Creating video from text
This is like seeing the first packets ever sent on the internet and noting that latency is high, lol.
kilbuz··on Sora: Creating video from text
I can respect that.
kilbuz··on New pill helps Covid smell and taste loss fade quickly
I was cooking tacos for my family knowing I had COVID (we all had it at the time). I remember not smelling the seasoning, and threw a small handful of chopped raw onions in my mouth to confirm the bad news...

Luckily it came back in about a week. Beer and wine tasted awful for a few weeks, and I am a fan of both. Luckily a year on, and all seems well for now.

kilbuz··on Ask HN: 20% of LinkedIn's recent layoffs were managers
Why don't you just tell me when you want it done? (said in Kramer MoviePhone voice)
kilbuz··on Where does my computer get the time from?
every NTP story needs a link to the Netgear/UW-Madison fiasco: https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~plonka/netgear-sntp/
kilbuz··on Mister Rogers had a point – routinely greeting six neighbors maximizes wellbeing
The global pandemic may be affecting their behavior.
kilbuz··on Remote work on HN: Who is hiring? – 69% jobs in 2023 are remote
haha found your comment with your recipe.
kilbuz··on What makes something an heirloom?
Nice, which watch you thinking? Something a bit off the beaten path? Vacheron, Journe, Laurent Ferrier perhaps?
kilbuz··on What makes something an heirloom?
A high-quality mechanical wristwatch.
kilbuz··on Even when we know they’re “fake,” placebos can tame our emotional distress
The book "Bad Science" has wonderful discussions and examples of the placebo effect as it relates to medical research. Highly recommended.
kilbuz··on ChatGPT is rendering other people's chat history in the sidebar
I use it to write data-driven shiny apps and JS frontends.
kilbuz··on The Right to Be Lazy (1883)
What accomplishments are you most proud of this year?
kilbuz··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
Possibly less than 0.
kilbuz··on Tech CEOs are quietly asking employees to step it up or risk getting fired
Well not necessarily pay... but conditions? Definitely.
kilbuz··on RStudio is now Posit
The rebrand makes a lot of sense, as the interest and support for Python in the DS/ML community keeps growing. I prefer R for data exploration and visualization, but knowing and leveraging both languages seems to be the way forward. Shiny for Python is a very interesting development.

Kudos to RStudio (Posit) for delivering great product over the last decade+ and growing a kind, helpful community!

kilbuz··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
500k TC is the new table stakes for these sorts of jobs. Agreed with your point though.
kilbuz··on Senior engineers are living in the future
Why is 3 days, likely with competing priorities, a reasonable timeframe to learn a new language well enough to contribute production code in your estimation?
kilbuz··on Scorched Earth: The Mother of All Games
I have been thinking about GORILLA.BAS this entire thread. I don't remember playing Scorched Earth as a kid, but somehow must have been exposed to it to make that connection 30 years later.

My middle school offered a BASIC class in the early 90s, which was my first experience with programming (besides LOGO in elementary school). In hindsight, the teacher was a complete blessing to us, as he 'let' us modify and play GORILLA.BAS and similar BASIC games during our time in class. We thought we were getting away with playing video games in school, but those experiences were setting the seeds for some of our future careers.

Great memories.

kilbuz··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Pin money in the Bay unfortunately!
kilbuz··on Why I left Google: work-life balance
All my wife's family bought houses here in the 80s. They would not be able to remotely afford to live here if they had to pay for housing at today's market rates. I think there is probably a lot of this in the Bay.
kilbuz··on Why I left Google: work-life balance
The math depends largely on what sort of housing situation you are assuming. As you probably know. $1.5-$1.8MM is a small (1200-1500 sq ft.) 3bd/2bth ranch house in a San Jose suburb with mediocre schools and strip mall culture. (e.g., https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1995-Majestic-Way-San-Jos...)

It goes up from there. Townhouses are getting close to $1.5MM now in the same area. I haven't followed prices in SF recently, but they are no better I assume. I think you'd be priced out of a small house on the peninsula at $500k/year.

If you're paying for college times 2, I don't know, $500k sounds kind of minimal with 7-10k a month mortgage if you want any sort of ability to save a meaningful amount of money.

Keep in mind you'll be paying $30k+ a year in property taxes every single year for the privilege of that house.

kilbuz··on Apple is discontinuing the iPod
