kevin_rubyhouse··on Syrian Electronic Army hijacks Microsoft blog and Twitter account
AFAIK, they're just Syria's nationalist version of Anonymous, but not necessarily all based in Syria. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_Electronic_Army
kevin_rubyhouse··on Syrian Electronic Army hijacks Microsoft blog and Twitter account
SEA claims that defacing Microsoft's blog/Twitter is just a distraction. A possible goal could be to leak a huge volume of internal email? They already captured and released one exchange.
kevin_rubyhouse··on AOL Sells Winamp And Shoutcast to Online Radio Aggregator Radionomy
So Microsoft didn't want Winamp and Shoutcast bad enough?
kevin_rubyhouse··on I flew on a plane without going through security. It was amazing and no one died
Nitpicking, but I wouldn't consider the people they are saving to be anonymous, but strangers. Maybe in the defender's eyes they are just fellow Americans.

kevin_rubyhouse··on Occupy Wall Street activists buy $15m of Americans' personal debt
When did we have free tuition for everybody?
kevin_rubyhouse··on Occupy Wall Street activists buy $15m of Americans' personal debt
No, that is not what OP implied at all. "For example, I owe a credit card company $20k"
kevin_rubyhouse··on Fourier Transforms – The Math Trick Behind MP3s, JPEGs, and Homer Simpson’s Face
Coincidentally, I just had a talk with one of our principle developers about Fourier transforms. He's an audio expert and was trying to explain re-sampling and aliasing to me. I understand the high level steps, but the math is all a blur to me. Recently I've been trying to become much stronger in math, as I eventually want to study aerodynamics and astrophysics. So I've been studying calculus (textbook) and dynamics (edx) lately.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Comcast is donating to defeat mayor who is bringing gigabit fiber to Seattle
I live in Redmond/Bellevue and this is very interesting. Do you know anywhere that I can read more about this?
kevin_rubyhouse··on Brazilian government to ditch Microsoft in favour of bespoke email system
I would like to see how this turns out considering how miserably the US's Healthcare.gov site has been going. It sounds like the Brazilian govt. is using an internal group (the Federal Data Processing Service [SERPRO]) to do this, while the US sourced the work to a domestic company (CGI Federal.) I've got a gut feeling that Brazil's email system will fare better than our Healthcare.gov site.

Article about SERPRO launching their cloud platform. http://www.zdnet.com/brazilian-government-launches-own-cloud...

Some random info about the Healthcare.gov devs: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/10/09/h...

kevin_rubyhouse··on Fix 260 character file name length limitation: Declined
I have the same feeling as you... I don't understand where other people's hostility is coming from. This sounds like it would be a minor change. Will Buik, who posted the decline note, said that it would affect many products and features. Besides making those changes, they also have to be rigorously tested. And then the change may not even be consistent all across the board because of third-party tools that depend on the 260 character limit assumption... In the end, Microsoft has limited resources just like every other company. They have to allocate it in a way that creates the most value for customers, I'm assuming. Bug fixing and addressing customer complaints is creating value, but it has to be weighed against other priorities, depending on the severity.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Rethinking Ray Ozzie
I agree. I've been working in Windows Embedded for a couple years now, and I work with some people in management not afraid to speak their minds to others on the team. Sometimes the way they react or phrase things helps me think from their vantage points.

Interns do seem to be treated differently though. Not many criticisms are voiced around them.

kevin_rubyhouse··on Ask HN: How do you defend yourself preemptively against patent trolls?
Agreed. It'd almost be a good problem to have, since it means that the OP's game/app is making him good money. Doesn't make sense to stress about it.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Ask HN: How do you defend yourself preemptively against patent trolls?
OP is probably referring to Lodsys, https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/10/patent-troll-lodsys-se..., who is known for suing iOS and I think Google Play developers for using in app purchases.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Response of US Govt to Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, and LinkedIn [pdf]
I think he was paraphrasing.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Team Foundation Service is experiencing an outage
Hasn't stopped working internally.
kevin_rubyhouse··on We hear you: Better commenting coming to YouTube
There are lots of trolls, but I always enjoy the occasionally hilariously clever comment or interesting information/opinions people can offer on more technical subjects.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Rasterisation patterns of the Haswell GPU
I don't understand the significance of this... Can somebody explain it to me like I'm 5 or provide a source for me to understand this more?
kevin_rubyhouse··on I'm Gen Y, and I Don't Feel Special or Entitled, Just Poor
Seriously? It's like the author, Adam, and I read a completely different Huffington blog posts. And why the hell does he need to drop the f-bomb so much to grab attention? I'm at the very end of Gen Y, born 1993 and 19 years old right now.

Adam says 'So take your “revise your expectations! check your ego!” Horatio Alger bullshit, and stuff it.' Are you kidding me? The Huffington blog post said the opposite! It said that Gen Yers should stay ambitious, but be more humble. We need to keep being ambitious, but expect that we need to work very hard to fulfill those ambitions.

Furthermore, Adam is ranting that he chose something he really wants to do and is poor, because his job doesn't pay enough. It sounds like he is very capable and could get a better job if he wanted to. He is expecting that the job he likes to do will make enough money to support his family and lifestyle (whatever it may be.) That sounds a lot like what the Huffington Post was saying too ("career path expectation.")

I think the Huffington blog post is fantastic, and many of my friends could benefit from its advice. At first though, it does seem to bucket and portray Gen Yers unfairly, but the post's conclusions make up for it.

kevin_rubyhouse··on If It's Important, Don't Hack It
"My metric for metrics is to track things that will change your behavior. If a metric changes and you don't, then it's a pointless metric."

This is exactly what you are supposed to do in high-level RTS strategy. In Starcraft for example, you should know ahead of time what 'tells' you are looking for, and disregard the rest. It lets you focus only on the information that influences your decisions, and minimizes distractions from "scary" things the opponent may be doing.

kevin_rubyhouse··on 17 y/o kicked out of house - seeking devilishly motivated partner
Sent you an email.
kevin_rubyhouse··on A horrifying startup accelerator story
Thanks for sharing. Any insight as to why investors sometimes back out at the last minute, after the startup has already committed to the change? I've read of that same thing happen at least a few times now... I just don't really understand why it happens.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Why does NASA use gold foil on equipment and gold-coated visors?
Is there not a way to synthesize gold, like how diamonds can be synthesized (obviously a different process.) I searched around, and I guess there isn't a good process for this, yet.

Also, how much could NASA really be spending on gold, anyway? They're already spending billions on the rest of their space program.

kevin_rubyhouse··on Groupon Fires Sales Rep Who Threatened Bad Reviews for Business Owner
Are you suggesting that Groupon is a scam, or suggesting that people will demonize Groupon because of this one sales rep? If you do think it's a scam, then why?
kevin_rubyhouse··on Hyperloop
Elon said that he isn't going to work on his Hyperloop idea. http://www.businessinsider.com/musk-too-busy-for-hyperloop-2...
kevin_rubyhouse··on Hyperloop
It should have been already published (at 1:30 pacific time.) https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/366964441159438337
kevin_rubyhouse··on Ask HN: Which startups will let me sell for them on a commission basis?
Also sent you a mail. I'm based in Seattle and my partner is in the UK. We're selling internationally.
kevin_rubyhouse··on Ask HN: Help With Network Filesystem Implementation
I don't understand how this is different? Option 1 sounds like MSFT SkyDrive and option 2 sounds like Dropbox. Just looking for what's different.

Oh! This is for a laptop, not an app like the two I mentioned?

kevin_rubyhouse··on Ask HN: Are Proprietary Game SDKs Worth $?
Do you mean it took 60-80 man years to get the Unreal engine to where it is today? Any chance you could find the source for that or site you think you saw it on?

Pretty amazing!

kevin_rubyhouse··on Education is for pussies
Ignorant and obtuse. Just because it worked out for you means that everybody should ditch it? And what about industries that you must have school for like medical?
