kemonocode··on Please support Web Monetization if you want less ads on the web
I remember when the web used to be (mostly) free, with no ads nor any expectation of payment from others. Sites were simpler then, sure, but costs were very manageable even if the barrier to entry was higher.

People deserve to get paid, for sure, but I think many overestimate the value of what they put out, and I'd argue much of the web has negative value these days due to the flagrant violations of privacy that come with the raw tripe I have to sift through if I'm seeking to be informed in a particular topic.

kemonocode··on Hyperinflation Pushes Venezuela to Print 1M-Bolivar Bills
You'd be selling crypto at a very beneficial rate for you and if you need to make sizable transactions in "worthless paper" within a fast enough timeframe anyway, it works out.
kemonocode··on Hyperinflation Pushes Venezuela to Print 1M-Bolivar Bills
Yes, yes it is. You can look at my previous comment history here on HN but I live in Venezuela and crypto is a very real lifeline for me as I'm considered persona non grata for the rest of the international banking system.

My only recourse to keep money that won't devaluate in a matter of days if not hours is to either have it in cash (dangerous and need to know the "right people"), make use of foreign currency-denominated accounts in national banks which would be an extremely foolish endeavor for reasons that should be patently obvious, a tiny amount of frankly dodgy international banks that still do business with Venezuelans... or crypto. In spite of the wild price swings, crypto remains the most reliable alternative among everything I've mentioned.

I grumble at the time limit on edits for HN comments sometimes, even if I do understand why it's there.

kemonocode··on Valve's Proton Has Enabled 7000 Windows Games on Linux
Epic would be a bigger threat to Valve's market dominance these days. If only they (Epic) decided to support Linux in a similar fashion...
kemonocode··on Valve's Proton Has Enabled 7000 Windows Games on Linux
It's a bit of a shame that Valve pretty much abandoned their Steam OS/Steam Machine endeavor, even if focusing on just one component (Proton) is arguably better than just having to deal with an entire distribution.

That said, I'm routinely amazed at how good Proton has gotten at running Windows games. I've still got dual boot for some stubborn stragglers, but the vast majority of my library runs just fine on Linux.

kemonocode··on Blockchain study of 43 solutions finds 0.00% success rate
Git also allows you to push --force if so you wish, something that would require a 51% attack if you were to do it in a blockchain-based ledger.

I really don't think blockchains are a panacea and in many cases they're a solution looking for a problem, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily useless.

EDIT: Also as a sibling parent said, it's just proof of work what gets the bad rap about power consumption, and there's nothing inherently costly in blockchains themselves.

kemonocode··on Coinbase mafia shows how tight a circle holds sway over Bitcoin
I won't say much about the article as it's a topic that has been discussed plenty of times before (The merits and faults of Bitcoin) with often inflammatory results, but I will definitively say it's pretty easy and rather intellectually dishonest to attack it only whenever there's a dramatic price swing. Where were all these articles during all those price lull periods?

Also, if we're pointing fingers, the influence Coinbase has on Bitcoin is insignificant compared to the Chinese mining conglomerates. The US is not the rest of the world.

kemonocode··on Coinbase mafia shows how tight a circle holds sway over Bitcoin
I agree, there needs to be a ruling about paywalled articles already. At the very least, tagging them properly (so people may ignore them at their leisure) or also putting an archive link in the comments.
kemonocode··on Changes to LastPass Free
I migrated from LastPass to KeePass + Syncthing when they got bought out by LogMeIn. Sounds complicated but only the initial setup is a little awkward, then it's smooth sailing from that point on, and no centralized server to ever worry about or your platform of choice going rogue. Keeping your devices secure is still on you, but that's true of any password manager.

It was absolutely the best choice to make and I encourage anyone to do so and never have to worry about your service going down or suddenly asking a "nominal" fee to the keys of your kingdom. Of course, should the need ever arise, it's not that hard to migrate to something like Bitwarden.

kemonocode··on When it comes to race and gender, oppressed people can be oppressors too
> Be wary of the white, straight men who call out lesbians and women of colour as bigots because they refuse to comply with the version of liberation they deem appropriate, and who pat themselves on the back for being an “ally” for doing so. Their naivety gives them the luxury of childishly dividing the world into goodies and baddies. The rest of us live with the consequences.

So close, and yet so far to getting it. Using white, straight men as scapegoats only cheapens the message from the article which is that yes: making swiping generalizations is bad and that discrimination happens everywhere, even within marginalized groups towards other marginalized people.

kemonocode··on DigitalOcean user portal loads twenty third-party trackers
Just did the same, and likewise here. I wonder if it's just a product of A/B testing or, more alarmingly, that person has malware injecting ads into any websites they browse which then Privacy Badger proceeds to block.
kemonocode··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store
It's trivial to sideload apps on most Android devices. You can't sideload on iOS unless you jailbreak or spend some time and money on a developer account, and even then you're rather limited on what you can do.
kemonocode··on ProtonMail, Tutanota urging EU to reconsider encryption rules
People are probably considering what you said an appeal to emotion, "Think of the terrorists!" being up there with "Think of the children!" in terms of excuses for misguided policies. Governments already have plenty of tools to track down and deal with terrorists if so they wished: a distressingly amount of planning and radicalization is done over clear text in social media, and even in E2EE there's a wealth of necessarily unencrypted metadata you can make use of.
kemonocode··on Stash is a Go app which organizes and serves your porn
I'd like to suggest Hydrus Network as a possible alternative to this, as it's also open source and written in Python: https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/

Of course, just not limited to porn and it can be used to classify/sort all kinds of audiovisual media, although its video/audio support is a tad lacking and it doesn't do so well with sequential art (You can still tag pages/chapters and have them somewhat ordered, but for instance it won't visualize CBZ archives)

Disclaimer: Not the author, merely just a (power) user whose use cases are mostly covered by it.

kemonocode··on Facebook restores service to socialist pages, claiming “automation error”
And that's the crux of the issue. You can debate all you want what is considered protected speech and what isn't (Just to get it out of the way, inciting an insurrection should not be considered protected speech) but in the end, if you want rules for the "other side" and not your own then you're not being intellectually honest, and those conflicts of interest exist everywhere.
kemonocode··on Tencent is acquiring a majority stake in Klei Entertainment
Interesting.

Can't say I'm particularly excited about Tencent snatching up yet another game studio, and they (Klei) were expecting backlash for sure which is why they prefaced with how they're maintaining autonomy when it comes to creative decisions and to be fair, Tencent has been fairly respectful in that regard with other studios... but one does not make an acquisition just to have it bleed money so I expect the level of screw-tightening to vary according to any future games' successes.

If they're successful in spite, and not because of their new overlords, I have little reason to believe things would change much- why kill the golden goose, after all? But if things don't go as wanted...

kemonocode··on Programming Language Creator or Serial Killer?

kemonocode··on Palantir’s God’s-Eye View of Afghanistan
And just like Tolkien's Palantíri, said information can drive others mad and although it may be truthful, it can still be manipulated to create a false impression.

Far too fitting indeed.

kemonocode··on Google Images Restored
Yeah, that's more or less what I got out of it, so it's effectively source-available but not really open source software per se?
kemonocode··on Google Images Restored
The project's rather esoteric license confuses me quite a bit, as it seems to have a mixture of English and French, and I can't make heads or tails out of the French parts. Could anyone else help me out describing the license terms in plain English, please?
kemonocode··on [dead]
Yes, with caveats. Parler weren't the martyrs of free speech they to paint themselves as, given the platform was actually pretty restricted with what kind of speech was tolerated and you could argue many of the things hosted there weren't free speech and they didn't do their due diligence to moderate their platform.

However, just as it happened with WikiLeaks, it just sets an ugly precedent and it shows to which extent all of the internet's content is effectively beholden to just a few entities. If they want you out, there's little you can do about it, no ifs or buts.

kemonocode··on Slack is down
Sorry, but an executive is not just "an employee" and any alarms are rightfully justified. Took a little bit of cajoling in my company but we've successfully moved to self-hosted tools for the most part (Jitsi and Rocket.chat) with just a couple of projects with outside contractors using Slack.
kemonocode··on Leaked documents from Nintendo investigation of hacker in 2013
You're conflating copyright with trademarks, they're not the same thing.
kemonocode··on Debian CD Image for AArch64 Windows Laptops
That's kind of horrifying in itself, considering I don't think there's a viable alternative for (WORM) mid-to-long term data storage most people have access to.

Of course, in practice with optic media you may stumble upon varying forms of bit rot, scratches or recording errors so it's definitively not the be-all and end-all, but still, I've got CDs recorded 30 years ago I can still read in modern systems and that I won't wipe by accident.

kemonocode··on Bitcoin Hits New All-Time High
Considering the generalized anti-crypto sentiment you often find here in HN, I'm not so sure about that. ;)

Speaking about the fact itself and not just quipping: I think this latest all-time high speaks a lot more about USD than it does about BTC. Lots of money floating around at the moment looking to get busy and all that.

kemonocode··on Is the US Banning Crypto Wallets?
The title is far more alarmist than what I interpret it to be. Basically, if you use a centralized exchange, all bets are off and any expectations of privacy you have are greatly reduced, so you're expected to comply to AML/KYC whenever withdrawing and depositing, so not really much of a change there. Peer to peer transactions are out of scope for this and any attempts at enforcing any law there would be nightmarish to say the least. This is not to say I exactly like this, but it's more of tightening a screw rather than installing a whole new set of them.
kemonocode··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
I've talked about it in length before here in HN comments (feel free to look into my comment history) but paraphrasing: I live in Venezuela, so many things people take for granted are unfeasible/outright impossible for me to get access to. I have a PayPal account but no useful international bank account, and as I refuse to keep any significant amounts of money there, that money needs to go somewhere, and physical cash comes with its own issues too.
kemonocode··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
My issue with these kind of questions is that they're hardly ever done in good faith, and they show over and over again whenever crypto is brought up on HN.

Crypto has its good uses, and I've relied on it for my livelihood before (and even wished it wasn't just used as a speculation vehicle) when traditional banking couldn't meet my needs, so it's a very Americentric/Eurocentric thing to assume it's only ever good to speculate on and buy drugs on the Dark Web.

That's it- that's its killer app, it's an alternative to existing money transfer and store of value mechanisms, anything else like "smart contracts" or reduced carbon footprints from better Proof-of-Stake implementations are a nice bonus and worth developing, of course.

kemonocode··on Watch live: Zuckerberg, Dorsey testify before Senate [video]
Many rich people are incredibly miserable and basically stuck in a position they cannot escape from. That doesn't mean they aren't doing a lot of harm (they are) or they aren't aware of it (again, they are) but they might not see a viable way out of it.

I remember when Zuckerberg was just seen like a nerdy, awkward kid suddenly put in big boy pants and people empathizing with him, and not like the eldritch abomination/reptilian drone he's seen like these days.
