kej··on PowerShell: The object-oriented shell you didn't know you needed
This is what I've moved to lately. I like the idea of structured data but PowerShell just feels like a shell designed by people who don't really want to use a shell.
kej··on Use Your Potions and Scrolls
This reminds me of a social media post I saw recently; apologies for the third-hand link: https://www.reddit.com/r/CuratedTumblr/comments/192f2uf/use_...
kej··on Show HN: Dimity Jones in Puzzle Castle: An Electronic Escape Novel
I think it's probably the same audience as something like Advent of Code. People who want to solve programming problems that are more interesting than the typical business logic we have to work on all day.
kej··on Funkwhale might be the most overlooked Fediverse project
>subscribed to Apple Music despite thinking it's overpriced and would love a good alternative

It's not perfect, but a YouTube Music subscription also gives you ad-free regular YouTube. That's a pretty nice bonus if you're going to be paying for music streaming anyway.

kej··on Reading more Ursula Le Guin (2019)
The stories in Tales From Earthsea are a lot closer to Tehanu than they are to the earlier books, for what that's worth. I get it if they're just not your thing, though; life is short and there's only so much time to read.
kej··on Ask HN: What is the most useless project you have worked on?
Just brainstorming, but would it be possible to pull out the MTG-specific portions and make it just an online card game framework where people can make their own cards and rules? If people choose to use it to copy MTG that's on them (see Tabletop Simulator, for example) but they might also use it to create their own new games.
kej··on Reading more Ursula Le Guin (2019)
You may already know this, but just in case, Tehanu is no longer the last Earthsea book. It is followed by the collection Tales From Earthsea and then The Other Wind.
kej··on Hybrid-Net: Real-time audio source separation, generate lyrics, chords, beat
There appears to be an issue with the lyric matching, which I'm guessing is based on caching the previously generated lyrics for different songs with the same name. I noticed it specifically on the song "Sweet Pea" by the Tobasco Donkeys, where it shows tabs and lyrics but they don't match the song.
kej··on .well-known/avatar
I might just be getting curmudgeonly in middle age, but I don't like this. I want it to be harder for services to share information about me. My address and phone number are also "public" but that doesn't mean I want every site to keep a copy of them.
kej··on Dracula's Biggest Mistake
That reminds me of this McSweeney's piece by Google's Peter Norvig: https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/stories-that-would-have-...
kej··on SuperTux
SuperTuxKart runs well on Android, and it will let you use the accelerometers to steer (so you just tilt the whole device like a steering wheel) which gives it a feeling a little like the Wii version of Mario Kart.
kej··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
This is something I really like about Nearly Free Speech.net. Their model is that you deposit funds up front, and they will deduct from those funds as you use services. It helps that they actually are nearly free so that a single $20 deposit can last for months or years in many cases.

It's bizarre to me that more services don't support billing this way, since there are tons of situations where I would much rather have a site or service go down than be hit with a surprise bill and have to depend on social media and magnanimous corporate PR.

kej··on Submarine cables cut in the Red Sea.Authorities looking at potential terrorism
Nitpick, Israel is just barely on the Red Sea via the Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba, not that it changes your point at all.
kej··on A former Gizmodo writer changed name to 'Slackbot', stayed undetected for months
This sounds a lot like when my kids realized anyone can edit Netflix/Disney+ profile names and pictures.
kej··on Encoding tic-tac-toe in 15 bits
That reminds me of a former coworker who wrote a paperback version of the game Nim (the math game where you remove sticks). It worked like a choose your own adventure where each possible move had a page number to jump to.
kej··on Video Game Module for Flipper Zero
A GPIO add-on with a case instead of the original exposed circuit board is cool, but the focus on gaming seems really bizarre to me. If I want to play games I could get a color handheld for a fraction of the price that will run a much larger variety of games.
kej··on Show HN: Galactic Compass – an app that points to the galactic center
It's not quite the same thing, but on Android you can use Sky Map [1] and search for "M6". (The actual center is just off from the star in Sagittarius that is closest to M6 (γ2 Sagittarii), but I don't believe Sky Map will let you search for it directly.)

kej··on What made Earth a giant snowball 700M years ago? Scientists have an answer
>Seems like it would be tough to do given all the dust and rocks

I wonder if there's a solution that uses the dust and rocks. Maybe you nudge some near-Earth asteroid near L1 and then blow it up or something.

kej··on 10 Actually Useful Things the Flipper Zero Can Do
It can play the kind of games you had on your cell phone 20 years ago, like snake or breakout, and it does just fine at those. It's hardly worth the price just for that, though.

kej··on Disney 'Cracks Down' on Mickey Mouse 'Steamboat Silly' Pirates
>Will we have new versions become public domain every couple years, corresponding to every individually released Movie or TV Cartoon/Short?

Yes, copyright protects artistic works, not individual characters. That means you can use the aspects of characters that appear in works that have entered the public domain, but not the parts that are still protected.

There was a period when anyone could make a Sherlock Holmes story, but you couldn't have Watson get married because that later book was still under copyright. The Wizard of Oz books have been in the public domain for a while, but Dorothy has to stick to the original diamond shoes because the ruby slippers originated in the MGM movie. The same thing will continue to happen with Mickey Mouse and every other character that appeared in multiple works.

kej··on The Uncomfortable – a collection of deliberately inconvenient objects
The double champagne glass reminds me a little of the double-spouted Native American wedding vase, and I could see it having a place in wedding ceremonies where the couple takes their first toast together or something.

kej··on Impacts of lid closure during toilet flushing
It's literally the second paragraph of the article:

>A surrogate for human enteric viruses (bacteriophage MS2) was added to household and public toilet bowls and flushed. The resulting viral contamination of the toilet and other restroom surfaces was then determined.

kej··on Enthusiasts struggle to keep model railway industry on track
My dad's train club, and most of the others I'm aware of, have had modular set ups for about 40 years. They pick a standard for module sizes and where the track connections need to be, and then everyone can design their own module as they like.
kej··on Psst: Paper-Based Secret Sharing Technique
> encryption via a custom deck of 64 cards

Instead of a custom deck, you could use a standard 78 card tarot deck and remove or just ignore one of the 14 card suits. Now you can buy encryption decks at many game or book stores and it's something people might plausibly have sitting around the house.

Do you have any more details about the card or bolt/washer systems anywhere? They both seem like cool ideas.

kej··on Something a lot like Pokemon Yellow
Pierre Menard, Developer of Pokemon Yellow.
kej··on Maildir-utils: index, search and manage Maildir mailboxes
If you have file-level access to the mail servers, any kind of file transfer of the maildirs should work. But from your description I'd encourage you to spend some time looking at imapsync, I think it's the closest fit to what you're wanting to do.
kej··on Poor Man's Web
If anything I think it's easier today than it was 10 or 20 years ago. There are plenty of free static hosts, free tiers on various cloud hosts for interactive sites, and services like ngrok or Cloudflare Tunnels that can safely expose a home server to the internet.
kej··on Firefox Sync actually works
Minor addition: you have to create a user chrome file AND you have to go into about:config and set "toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets" to true.
