karimmaassen··on No one wants simplicity
Simplicity is not about making complex things simple, it's about making it simple to do complex things.
karimmaassen··on The Best iPhone
I'm a BIG fan of my 13 mini. Bought it last December and absolutely love the small form factor. The battery is no problem at all, even with extensive use. I easily have 20% or more left at the end of the day and it's not even an issue when having it used for CarPlay.

I'm saddened by the idea there will never be a mini again.

karimmaassen··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
Safari user here. I often feel I'm a minority, but it's a really good browser for my Mac. Had been using Firefox after Chrome before switching to Safari.
karimmaassen··on I fucking hate Jira
What I find the real problem is not JIRA itself, but the fact that most of the time JIRA, is abused up to a point where it's become unusable. The inability or unwillingness (or both?) of the teams I've worked with to structure their work, write good user stories and keep things simple is in my experience the root cause of any shitty JIRA experience I've had. Of course it doesn't help per se that JIRA allows you to do that, but I guess that's not the tool's fault. (You can write bad and good essays with Microsoft Word).
karimmaassen··on Orkut
For the Dutch speaking community, Orkut has always had a strange connotation to it, as part of the name is a swear word.
karimmaassen··on Panic in Startupland
Here's the thing: Finding a solution to a problem, then making it into a business that is sustainable (read: had money influx) during dire times (read: economic recession), is a very good and healthy beginning for your start-up.

Doing startups when money is sloshing around, often leads to zombie companies that are on life support.

The panic in startupland stems from the fact that most of them are cut off from said life support.

karimmaassen··on Show HN: Open-source Firebase Alternative? It's here
Honest question: does any of you use Firebase and why (not)?

karimmaassen··on Cancel as a Link or a Button? (UX)
But you would not be destroying data. It's an UI interaction which you're applying (i.e. closing the modal view, and thus navigating back to the previous state of your UI).

I agree with you that modals are abused. Modals should - in my opinion - be used for immediate actions such as your example.

Side panels however are fine in my book. In the end, we're talking about the same thing: example.com/fruits/new - Navigating (there you have it) to this URL should provide the user with an interface to fill out a form to create a new fruit.

In practice this could just as easily be a side panel triggered from the fruits list page, by clicking on the "new fruit" link. The URL should reflect that UI state change.

karimmaassen··on Cancel as a Link or a Button? (UX)
Which one is UX best practice and why? A small exploration as to why one is preferred over the other.
karimmaassen··on We Don't Do Daily Stand-Ups at Supercede
In today's world of online work, I feel the stand-up is losing it's value. As Jason Fried (37signals, Basecamp) quite well stated many years ago: to embrace a fully decentralized online way of working, is to embrace asynchronous communication.

The idea we need to "come together" to "talk about what we're doing" is invalidated if we can do this much better and more effectively when allowing for a decentralized and documentend working environment.

Why I prefer collaborating with designers who use tools such as Figma, is the fact I can annotate their work, not expecting an immediate response, but allowing them to handle my comment in an appropriate manner, when they seem fit, how they seem fit.

Almost nothing these days need an acute response.

karimmaassen··on We Don't Do Daily Stand-Ups at Supercede
Asking a team what they want or prefer doesn't always equate to what it actually is they need or prefer. Often it's either peer pressure or a false believe something has value while in reality it doesn't.

Not saying this is the case with your team, but be aware this can happen.

karimmaassen··on I Don’t Want to Be Like a Family with My Co-Workers
I remember (can't find it anymore) a company whose CEO specifically hired people for life, considering them to be part of the family and as you wouldn't fire your sibling or child, they would not fire someone if they were to have prolonged issues. Rather, they'd try and help them for as long as it takes.

It created a completely different dynamic in the company where no one feared for their jobs if they had issues.

karimmaassen··on For developers, Safari is crap and outdated
The only thing I hate about Safari is that it won't let me go full PWA. Besides that, I'm fine with it.
karimmaassen··on App Store Arguments
Kinda agree. I as an iPhone user, am completely aware of the fact I'm not only buying "just a device" but I committed myself to an ecosystem.

And I did so, quite willingly as I place my trust in Apple and how they control and guard the quality and safety of the software that I can put on my iPhone.

Now I can understand the sentiment of "free choice". But we're not talking about public utilities here. These are all commercial products provided to us by private companies. The choice we have is to not accept the offer as a whole. The market has spoken however and it seems we - the general public - are ok with how Apple runs their company.

karimmaassen··on New study suggests handwriting engages the brain more than typing
It's for this that I bought the reMarkable and drag it into every meeting I attend. I feel like I'm in more control of what is happening instead of staring at a laptop screen and not really showing interest in the meeting at hand. I hold the device like a notepad and it gives for a completely different dynamic then a laptop (or even an iPad tbh).
karimmaassen··on Visual Game Editor for Pixi.js
Will battery life be horrific, or just "sub par"? In other words, are users going to notice and should I refrain from doing it this way?
karimmaassen··on Visual Game Editor for Pixi.js
Can I use this to build and deploy games for iOS or Android?
karimmaassen··on Hacking Portable Air Conditioners
After watching that video, I decided to relocate my portable air conditioner. The exhaust tube is now super short, directly mounted to a hole in the wall, and insulated to compensate for the inefficiency of these type of devices. It made all the difference.
karimmaassen··on Brown M&Ms, or Why No One Reads the Manual
Without actually writing 'TL;DR' though. A well written email, letter or anything really, usually starts with the gist of the message. "Don't waste people's time" by fluffing up your texts.

(Unless it's a novel, but then the goal is to build up a story to an apotheosis)

karimmaassen··on The United Nations of Uniqlo
Same. The first time I went to a Uniqlo was in Tokyo. I was amazed. There's one in Amsterdam (I'm Dutch) so I revisited and was surprised with almost the exact same experience. As when I went shopping in New York, beginning this year.

The quality of these clothes, especially for this price range, is extraordinary. H&M - my previous go-to shop - is utter crap in comparison.

karimmaassen··on Economists study what happens when people stop using Facebook
I still use Reddit, Youtube and Twitter on a daily basis. I get to choose what to follow, how and for that, it's informative (and a time-passing activity for sure) and useful.

Facebook, on the other hand, is an all or nothing app in my opinion. It's difficult to distinguish between who to friend and who not. Close friends and family members, I keep in touch with through WhatsApp, text and whatnot.

As an entertainment (or informative) platform, Facebook is even worse. Sensationalism and misinformation is rampant, or you're bombarded with ads. And you're not really allowed to interact or disagree without getting into a de-railed discussion.

On top of that, you're comparing your life with those of others (' highlights). It's a useless and depressing timesink (which Instagram is as well for those exact same reasons).

I'm glad I quit Facebook (for 99%).

karimmaassen··on JavaScript Libraries Are Almost Never Updated Once Installed
I never understood the need (desire) to update your dependencies as much and often as possible. As long as a project builds and runs without any issues, why put effort in upgrading libraries and exposing yourself to possible issues.
