kamyarg··on We're going to need default hard budget caps on pretty much everything
Learnt recently DigitalOcean does not have hard budgets limits, only emails. I am surprised and torn between this being intentional vs. them not caring.

One solution is banking apps that let you create extra cards and assigning hard limits to spending. Wise & Revolut apps can do that.

Have to mention OpenRouter also, I logged into OpenRouter through pi, on the auth screen it optionally let me set a limit which is very smart and user friendly.

You can see this is not a cyclic issue.

Or atleast not a cycle shorter than couple thousand years.

kamyarg··on Show HN: Weedout – Safari extension that hides YouTube AI-labeled videos
Started working on a port yesterday and got time to continue today and just saw you had the same idea. Sharing for anyone interested:

kamyarg··on Show HN: Talos – An AI agent with a permission kernel between model and shell
Have been developing and using a similar thing myself:

https://github.com/kamyar/ozm - Oberzugriffsmeister (“chief access master”)

Still some rough edges, and definitely not security audited. :)

In essence: All commands are routed through ozm, which has a per project and global allow list and block list.

Otherwise asks the user and does its best remembering what the user allowed to execute including debug/one off scripts that the agents write. If a previously allowed files was changed, it shows a diff of what changed since the last execution.

kamyarg··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
Just so you know, Apple supports requesting refund for purchases that did not meet your expectations.
kamyarg··on Helsinki Hacker News Meetup
Interested in Berlin also. Happy to help co-organize also. Email in profile.
kamyarg··on Hamburg's Stadtpark: A Park Built to Be Used
Tiergarten is surrounded by government buildings, embassies, malls, big wide roads and office skyscrapers. None are "living" spaces.

I love Tiergarten, but I see the surrounding being overrun by these as why it is so underrated/unknown. Otherwise an amazing place to cycle through, chill on the grass with friends or grab a beer in Café am Neuen See.

kamyarg··on Meta pauses AI training program tracking employee keystrokes after internal leak
Good.

Hope this initiative fails spectacularly.

kamyarg··on Loupe – A iOS app that raises awareness about what native apps can see
Holy cow, did not know ios lets apps access so many finger printable information such as apps installed, last wipe and number of copy actions. Installed the browser as I am confident it will be good also.

Thank you!

kamyarg··on What not to write on your security clearance form (1988)
This has been one of the best articles I have read.

Thank you for the digging that up and sharing.

kamyarg··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
I have the exact same workflow as you.

icloud works great.

Was thinking of proton but reading your comment has changed my mind, good catch-all custom domain support is a must for me.

kamyarg··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
icloud mail support custom domains.

I am using them.

Sending an email from catch-all covered email is not a big issues also, create use, delete and it still works.

I am slowly transitioning to icloud from gmail, was thinking of proton but reading the above comment made me change my mind, good custom domain support is a must for me.

Crowd sourced in-video sponsor auto skip, I have been contributing to it myself as the UX is great.

kamyarg··on Ask HN: Worst experience receiving an offer?
This is done partly to prevent people from using written offers as leverage to either negotiate a higher compensation at their current job or another company they are interviewing with.
kamyarg··on Coinbase Announces 18% Layoffs
I have seen people fired in the morning and their access cutoff by noon and them being asked to go on "gardening leave" in Europe.

This is rare but depends on your manager, if they don't want you around. You will still be paid for the remaining of your "employment" but will not be working.

kamyarg··on Ask HN: What are some great engineering blogs?
It is less technical and more leadership, strategy and soft skill side of engineering but https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/ definitely deserves a mention.
kamyarg··on Why Is German Internet So Bad
Software side also does not look bright, France is doing much better innovative tech than Germany.

Swiss, Dutch and Swedes are all also doing much better imho.

kamyarg··on Missing line in a smart contract leads to $10M hack
Not sure about articles but I can recommend Crypto Kittens Tutorial[1].

It has been some time since I did it(Late 2018 I think), but was really informative to get the mindset and different constraints people deal with in smart contract world.

kamyarg··on Missing line in a smart contract leads to $10M hack
Not an expert in solidity but from my limited experience EVM and smart contracts have really different approach when it comes to computation.

two things that come to my mind:

- There is really no random() function due to need for determinism

- Space vs. Time complexity is distorted, the gas you pay for instruction vs. byte is really different economics compared to AWS EC2 instance/hour etc.

kamyarg··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
Recently started working on a command line tool to easily record things I learnt.

https://github.com/kamyar/til

You can install it using "pip install til-cli", feedback/suggestions most welcome. :)

Was inspired by Simon Willison's TIL Page

kamyarg··on $365B wiped off cryptocurrency market after Tesla stops accepting Bitcoin
> Decentralized networks are a rare medium well-done.

https://steak.network/

kamyarg··on Berkshire: Bitcoin is ‘contrary to the interest of civilization.’
I think what the parent comment suggests is "Seal of approval" situation, similar thing that happened with Tesla buying bitcoin caused price surge. When a well known entity invests in crypto, trust in crypto goes up.

Berkshire buying bitcoin would definitely make me buy more bitcoin.

kamyarg··on What's Salesforce? (2019)
