kamarg··on In Argentina, inflation is a way of life
There's plenty of well off people that steal because they want more. The fact someone is stealing doesn't lead to the conclusion that they don't have enough income to live off of. And if things in Argentina are really as bad as the business owner claims where you can't fire employees and you can't go to the police, theft is probably seen as an extremely low risk activity. For many people, increasing your income by a significant amount through actions that are highly unlikely to have a negative outcome wouldn't require much consideration.
kamarg··on A $3B bet on finding the fountain of youth
> Researching immortality or unnatural longevity isn't worth the investment for a society because a society of immortals becomes either stagnant or unsustainable.

This is said with an awful lot of certainty for something that's never been accomplished before. Do people and systems get stuck in their ways? Absolutely. But they also change for better and for worse. There's no guarantee/proof that living forever ends in stagnation or an unsustainable culture.

kamarg··on Inflation rises to 7% in December (led by energy)
I wasn't old enough to be employed the last time the US had inflation this high but I can tell you that my current employer has stated that we aren't getting cost of living adjustments despite the high inflation. Instead they're claiming that raises will be based on each employees contribution to the company. Which would be great if they actually meant it since all of us engineers would be getting very significant raises. What will actually happen is that all of us will get about 2% raises, a bunch of people will quit because the job market for developers is great right now, and then the company will hire in a bunch of junior devs for higher wages than the current junior devs are getting.
kamarg··on Sensor Network Technology in Vinge’s a Deepness in the Sky
Iain M Banks' series of Culture novels are extremely good and mostly don't revolve around action. Not quite the same but if you enjoyed Vinge you'll likely enjoy Banks as well.
kamarg··on Reddit files to go public
There's plenty of companies that are distributed across countries. On my team I have teammates in Macedonia, Costa Rica, USA, and Germany. Even without Covid restrictions, that's going to be expensive and time consuming for us to meet in person.
kamarg··on Ask HN: Why would a city on Mars avoid Armageddon?
That may have changed as of a week ago. NASA is testing a method of deflecting asteroids. See https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/science/nasa-launch-test-m....
kamarg··on Financial innovations brought by technology
Not to mention most safe deposit boxes are insured for a few hundred dollars max unless you've specifically bought additional insurance. So if the bank does screw up and give your box contents to someone else, you can only recover a very minimal amount of the value.
kamarg··on Alibaba has lost $344B market cap in the past year
It's not always directly pointed out but I think quite a few people would like a system that is either/or. Either I pay you a reasonable amount to not show me ads or you give me the product for free and serve up ads. Similar to how some mobile apps and games have an in app purchase option to disable ads.
kamarg··on Startup Ideas
I used to work with the lead author of that paper. He's one of the smartest devs I know and has a great sense of humor. I'm not surprised that he would publish something like this or that he ended up at Google.
kamarg··on Redditors are right about the unfairness of the market
> Why don't everyone buy into index funds then (genuine question) ?

There's actually been a bunch of articles over the last year or two talking about how the large number of passive investors in index funds is causing an issue for price discovery of individual stocks.

And everyone doesn't do it because some people are ok with taking more risk for more return.

kamarg··on Scientists create matter from pure light, proving the Breit-Wheeler effect
There's a pretty big difference between being able to colonize the universe and being able to colonize planets near to you. As an example, the Federation wasn't even able to map out a single galaxy nevermind colonize it.
kamarg··on OnlyFans drops planned porn ban
Many of the adult sites that have tried using crypto for payments have reported that less than two percent of their users are willing to pay with crypto. Until it becomes as easy as using a credit card or PayPal, crypto isn't going to be the savior of adult content.
kamarg··on What do you do with a billion grams of surplus weed?
No empowement. Mistakes could lead to too much bad PR, court cases, or fines. It also means that if anything bad happens, they can fire the employee that didn't follow corporate's rules and claim it was a mistake by the employee and totally not the company's fault.
kamarg··on In praise of defensive football
FIFA is currently trialing a 30:00 half with a countdown clock that stops when play is interrupted. Along with that throwins would become kickins, teams have unlimited substitutions, a yellow card would result in a five minute penalty similar to hockey, and the ability to self-kick (dribble) on set pieces.

The trials took place at the end of July this year at a youth tournament.

You can read a bit more about it at https://theathletic.com/2730341/2021/07/27/the-future-of-foo... if you have a subscription.

kamarg··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
It's more expensive to make a bad hire than to not hire someone and move a bit slower.
kamarg··on President of Chad Killed on the Battlefield
Are these elections or "elections"? I don't know anything about Chad.
kamarg··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
> they're competing against the alternative of you finding a position on your own first (or otherwise no longer requiring their services)

Almost every recruiter will constantly ask you if you're interviewing anywhere else or working with any other recruiters. They do this so they can be sure nobody else has the right to represent you to a client but also to gauge how much effort to put into presenting you to any of their clients. If you're not working with a a single recruiter exclusively, you'll often find that the amount of work they put in to get you in front of their clients drops dramatically to the point they no longer return your calls/emails.

kamarg··on Brave buys a search engine, promises no tracking, no profiling
Not at most places and often times that number will have a large reward points pool already built up because others are also using it to avoid giving out their number.
kamarg··on Sony DD-1EX Electronic Book Player
I loved my mini-disc player. They somehow felt more futuristic than than the better alternatives. It's too bad there was virtually no support for them in the US.
kamarg··on New report on Apple’s VR headset: 8K in each eye, potential $3k price tag
Why not do multiple cameras and broadcast each of the feeds? Then it's up to the software for each user to do head tracking.
kamarg··on Ask HN: Remote workers in a non-tech city, what's your experience?
Some of the larger SV companies publicly said they would be adjusting salaries for employees that chose to move to lower cost of living locations. Typically when this is done, it uses the numbers provided by the government to provide the adjustment numbers.

As someone working remotely for a company out of the Midwest where things are cheaper, they specifically mentioned that they would not be adjusting salaries up or down if their employees choose to move.

kamarg··on My Favorite Books 2020
It's always impressive to me when someone makes it through the slog that was books 4-8. Books 10-12 really pick up the pace again. I believe that's when Sanderson took over for the late Robert Jordan.

If you enjoy somewhat grittier fiction, I would suggest Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy.

kamarg··on Chuck Yeager has died
It's not the specific way of speaking that prevents panic. It's the training. It just happens that for a while pilots all wanted to sound like Chuck Yeager and then it just became the way new pilots talked because that's how all the other pilots they knew talked.
kamarg··on Eric Schmidt has applied to become a citizen of Cyprus
Per https://www.globalcitizensolutions.com/americans-dual-citize...

"...it’s important to recognize that the USA follows a ‘master nationality’ rule. What this means is, it recognizes only the US nationality of an individual, regardless of whether that individual holds any other citizenship."

So it's not that it doesn't allow it so much as it just pretends that your additional citizenship(s) don't exist. The USG will come after you for entering/leaving the US using a non-US passport though.

kamarg··on Pinterest cancels office lease in unbuilt project, citing work-from-home shift
I remember this from back in the 90's when I was a kid. You'd get into this little platform and they'd lower an arm with a ring around you to keep you from walking out and hurting yourself. Then they put a heavy, bulky helmet on and gave you a pointer device to hold straight out at arms length for the entire time you played. It was super fun even with terrible graphics but by the end of it my arms and neck were awfully sore.

And as far as I can remember, my brother and I were the only two customers we ever saw in there during weekends and we went at least twice a month until it went out of business

kamarg··on Illustrated Notes for “Building a Second Brain”

kamarg··on Mental Wealth
I don't think that's a safe statement to make. See Vancouver in 2011 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Vancouver_Stanley_Cup_rio...).
