kaitnieks··on Ask HN: What do you eat, hackers?
Always the same place with some exceptions. I like familiar environment that makes me feel comfortable.

I'll add one more thing - the dining place is not the closest to my house and I'm walking to it every day. I make sure to walk instead of driving, no matter what the weather is outside. Now my body is addicted to these daily walks and demands them. I recommend this to everyone who can't or won't work out - at least find a place to walk to every day - the further the better.

kaitnieks··on Ask HN: What do you eat, hackers?
Mostly: boiled potatoes, sour cream, meatballs, bacon chop, yogurt, bananas, pancakes, pasta, rice, sausages, brown bread with honey.

All of my friends prefer baked potatoes or fries, not me.

kaitnieks··on REST in peace, SOAP
The biggest problem I see with this is that in real life clients will hard-code the urls anyway and break when the urls get changed.
kaitnieks··on Electric cars neither as useful nor as green as their proponents claim

kaitnieks··on Gold as the “ultimate bubble”
It does look kind of unstable: http://inflationdata.com/inflation/images/charts/Gold/Gold_i...

Despite that I own some gold related stocks and ETFs. I believe there is still way to go, especially considering the uncertainty about the world currencies.

kaitnieks··on Ask HN: Building something the customers don't know they want
If that is a purely technical feature that can't be marketed from business viewpoint easily, use prototypes or samples to demonstrate, walk them through the process you intend for them by explaining your vision.

If you're not working with some specific customer (but just throwing the product online and hope someone starts using it) then you better find at least one live, cooperative customer to work with (huge discounts or even for free if necessary) and see your own product through their eyes. That will help you understand most problems with the product or marketing.

kaitnieks··on Duke Nukem Forever is here.
Do you think their strange business model (hyping and promising the game for years without delivering; an opposite to release early philosophy) will work out in the end? Will people actually buy the game or simply satisfy their interest from reviews and videos?
kaitnieks··on Just launched: http://talkMiner.com
One minor suggestion: Do not shorten titles so aggressively (or at least add full title to title element). Here's an example: http://talkminer.com/searcher.jsp?q=scalability - all titles are prefixed by "Seattle Conference on Scalability:" and then almost all of the real title gets cut off.

People have been speculating about this for a while now:

2008, http://forums.finalgear.com/top-gear/ben-collins-on-topgear-...

2009, http://forums.finalgear.com/top-gear/daily-mail-reveals-all-...

Some even guessed correctly in 2005, but I think that was luck because a lot of names were thrown around.

kaitnieks··on How Many People Are You Consuming in a Day?
I actually thought it would describe some kind of green soylent-ish scenario with calculations about number of people required...
kaitnieks··on Magic-1 is a homebuilt minicomputer, cpu and all
Let's try not to kill the computer by visiting webpages it serves all at once :)
kaitnieks··on P = NP for Non-Math Majors
It is written in a stupid way with lots of words without real content, but I think it actually has a paragraph that explains the problem quite well to "OMG - LOL" crowd:

P and NP are both a collection of problems whose solutions are “fast.” The question of P versus NP revolves around whether for all problems that a computer can quickly verify a solution (NP), if it can also quickly find a solution (P). We know that if we have quickly found a solution that we can quickly verify it, so P problems are a subset of NP ones. But the P versus NP problem asks the reverse (sorta): can something be easy to verify, but hard to solve? Are P problems always NP problems? Does P equal NP?

kaitnieks··on Ask HN: How do I ask for a salary increase?
Ask "the man" if he has any plans to increase your salary, or if there is a company policy that dictates that kind of thing. This way he will know that you are interested in a raise, you will know from his answers if you have any hopes of getting one, and then you can decide whether to stay there or not.

kaitnieks··on Ask HN: How do you stay motivated when the project gets stale?
The act of finishing should be enjoyable but what if it's not? Are there any tricks to make yourself be happy about the finish?
kaitnieks··on Do Schools Kill Creativity?
I'm not sure if those mistakes compare. When you fail at school's test it's because you didn't learn some facts or formulas, not because you took wrong steps in unpredictable markets and environments.

The companies do punish people who make the wrong decisions even though these people couldn't have known they would be wrong and just took a bold step. But in startups you also get penalized by losing your company and/or money.

kaitnieks··on Why men are attracted to women with small feet
Since all HN'ers claim they chose right sided faces, I'll be the one to admit I chose all lefts (easy). But I didn't choose a woman (or man :D) to marry, I just chose whichever I considered to be more attractive generally speaking.
kaitnieks··on HN Meetup: Vilnius, Lithuania
I was planning to go to vacation to either Estonia or Lithuania this summer. I could adjust my plans to make it to the meetup. Maybe.

When are you planning it?

kaitnieks··on A jQuery plugin for crashing IE6

kaitnieks··on CSS vendor prefixes considered harmful
actually you could end up having 5:

-o-superstyle

-webkit-superstyle

-moz-superstyle

-ms-superstyle

superstyle /* for new versions released after standard becomes stable */

And only if no more new browsers appear.

kaitnieks··on CSS vendor prefixes considered harmful
But what about having -x-border-radius (for those who don't care about the differences) and -webkit-border-radius (for those who do) as halo suggested? I don't see the drawbacks.
kaitnieks··on CSS vendor prefixes considered harmful
Your idea is way better than mine. I like it and I seriously hope it will be heard.
kaitnieks··on CSS vendor prefixes considered harmful
I agree that these are annoying for developer and somewhat harmful for traffic. However the real problem lies in politics. When browser representatives suggest a new standard and everyone says "fine, we like it but we must think about it" it makes sense to implement this standard in vendor specific way. That serves as a live example for all developers, standards committee and developers of other browsers, yet nobody can blame them for implementing new standard cowboy style and trying to get it become de-facto before everyone has agreed like MS use(d?) to do. The question is "when should the vendor prefix go?" Obviously right now it's happening too slowly so maybe the whole process needs to be improved and maybe there needs to be a mid-state for new standards - one that is not "in-draft" and not complete either ("release candidate", ha!).

I joined Reddit programming after I joined Hacker News. I keep hearing these bad things about Reddit but actually I find links and discussions interesting there. Sometimes more interesting than here because people are more relaxed. Yes, there are those obvious jokes and even purposely made accounts to post specific kind of useless comments but I just sniff and keep scanning the rest of them. In reddit it feels more like discussing with colleagues than with professors. I'm not saying HN is worse, on the contrary - both are important. Often I would read both - HN's and reddit's opinions on the same article.
kaitnieks··on Lessons from eastern Europe's flat tax
Sometimes Baltic states are considered Northern Europe, sometimes Eastern Europe. In any case article mentions Estonia as well.
kaitnieks··on Lessons from eastern Europe's flat tax

kaitnieks··on Lessons from eastern Europe's flat tax
If you're employed then you don't have to do any form filling at all. It's responsibility of your employer to pay all the taxes and you only get the amount after taxes in your bank account. Typically accountants do all the computing.

There is an exception, self-employed people. They do have to fill in forms and compute everything but their taxes are flat, there is no non-taxable minimum. They have less total tax % but also less perks (no paid vacations or sick days etc)

Update: no, we don't have to declare foreign bank accounts afaik. It might change this year because they just started taxing income from capital gains which will cause some headache for me personally.

kaitnieks··on Lessons from eastern Europe's flat tax
I live in eastern Europe and there is one thing that might be relevant. The flat tax here is actually progressive tax in disguise. We have something that could be called non-taxable minimal amount (sorry, I'm not an economist) which is let's say 80 Latvian gold coins (Lgc); the average salary is 400 Lgc; the income tax + social tax is roughly 32% from the amount that remains after non-taxable minimum is substracted. So effectively it would be 0% for people with 80 Lgc salary; 26% for people with average salary; 29% for people with 1000 Lgc salary.
