kaa2102··on “Cheating teachers go to jail. Cheating Wall Streeters don’t. What’s up?”
A regulator or prosecutor needs to first be willing to charge a bank or Wall Street executive before anything can get to a jury.
kaa2102··on 1.5 Million Missing Black Men
Interesting point. A fraternity brother of mine was in a documentary called Gideon's Promise. The tragedy is that many of the people that get incarcerated never make it to court. The accused end up with underfunded, overburdened public attorneys They might end up taking a very bad plea deal.
kaa2102··on 1.5 Million Missing Black Men
I'm a Black Man. Growing up there was a realization that being alive and out of trouble over the age of 21 was an accomplishment. This would extend to middle class. Due to a history of American apartheid, there were often just a few degrees of separation between middle class and working/poor class kin.
kaa2102··on Jerry Lawson, a self-taught engineer, gave us video game cartridges
Yes, this is true, but the child in me wants to also believe it was "magic".
kaa2102··on Stand With Greece
Austerity for the sake of austerity must end.
kaa2102··on Coinbase Exchange
I see many comments about what's wrong with Coinbase. What would a secure bitcoin exchange look like? A few of the features have been thrown out, e.g., little or no hot storage, two-factor authentication, (some) insured deposits, multisig-protection, decentralized services, etc.

The bank failures you cited are outside of the US and the FDIC is not applicable. Yet, FIDC only covers deposits up to $250,000.
kaa2102··on Nobody Ever Gets Credit for Fixing Problems That Never Happened (2001) [pdf]
Nassim Taleb provides a good example in his book Fooled by Randomness. Imagine that a politician passed a $1 billion requiring all airline cockpits to be locked prior to 9/11. That politician would probably be criticized and then voted out of office.
kaa2102··on The $3500 Shirt – A History Lesson in Economics
This article shows the true value of innovation over time in saving time, money, and effort.
kaa2102··on RadioShack Prepares Bankruptcy Filing
It would be sad to see my go-to electronics DIY-spot go away.
kaa2102··on Show HN: Beds and services for homeless youth
God bless you man. Great project. Any way others can donate time, code, or $ to the cause of eradicating youth poverty, hunger and homelessness?
kaa2102··on No, I’ll tell you the answer
Identify the key risks and opportunities for failure and develop strategies to reduce the likelihood, impact and vulnerability to the risk event(s).

I certainly do agree with finding the right strategy for you "Keep your head about you when others are losing their heads and blaming it on you." I decided to build while I have full time job. The builds, releases and pivots are slow but I am managing my time well and I am certainly not starving.

kaa2102··on Why you shouldn’t sell apps through iTunes
The fact that Apple can and does reject apps makes me very hesitant to invest time in developing on the platform.
kaa2102··on A new book compiles knowledge necessary for society to recover after disaster
This reminds me of a physics & engineering teacher I had in high school. He insisted that we use calculus to derive all of the kinematic equations. I think that rebooting society should function in a similar manner. We should remember the key laws, discoveries and methods and then rebuild society better than it was before.
kaa2102··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
spendology.net/calculators - Several online financial calculators including a smart budget calculator, rent vs. buy calculato, and a gas vs. electric car calculator. The website his in a partnership with Bankrate Inc. to serve advertisements for banks, brokerages, insurance companies, and credit cards.
kaa2102··on The Quest for Randomness
I've done some work with monte carlo and discrete event simulation. The runs/iterations produced utilize psuedo-random number generation. Many discrete-event simulation software platforms reproduce exactly the same numbers on a given run. Also, monte carlo simulation software like @Risk and CrystalBall enable users to select psuedo-random number generation methods. For instance, utilizing the Latin Hypercube method will sample more evenly from a Gaussian distribution rather than pulling more from the peak and tails.
kaa2102··on Capital Man: Thomas Piketty is economics’ biggest sensation and fiercest critic
Tonight's Cosmos featured the discovery that lead pollution from car emissions was poisoning the environment and humans. However, automobile and oil & gas companies had a vested interest in the status quo.

It took 25 years to remove lead from gasoline, e.g., unleaded gasoline. Unrestricted Free Market Capitalism has no environmental or health constraints or concerns. There must be a counterbalance or else our health, wellbeing, and the environment will suffer.

kaa2102··on Capital Man: Thomas Piketty is economics’ biggest sensation and fiercest critic
Length of life and quality of life are very different things.
kaa2102··on Show HN: Designing a Quick-Drying Bath Towel Hook
Thank you. I did think about getting a rough prototype built but I decided to not reinvent the wheel: I used the shower rod for the initial concept test. The shower rod would be a great solution if the shower curtain did not need to be fully extended to prevent the growth of mold.

I thought that airflow would be a key determinant in drying time. However, the Z Hook actually just spreads the towel out to maximize towel surface area contact with the air and enabling more uniform heat transfer during convection heating.

kaa2102··on How Everyone Got the Top 1% Wrong
The "rich get richer" is not always a given. When the top tax rate was 90% the "rich stay rich". Robert Reich addressed growing income inequality and the virtuous cycle in his recent documentary inequalityforall.com. Taxation, when used effectively, can encourage individuals with low or no marginal propensity to consume to focus on consuming rather than investing or sitting on piles of cash.
kaa2102··on Flappy Thirds
I think it's fun and a good time-waster. Lack of colors and stages should prevent "addiction".
kaa2102··on Mt. Gox knowingly traded non-existent Bitcoins for two weeks, filing shows
Are you suggesting that establishing a bitcoin exchange in the US would prevent another Mt. Gox? Why?
kaa2102··on Mt. Gox knowingly traded non-existent Bitcoins for two weeks, filing shows
He who spends what isn't his'n, must buy it back or go to prison.
kaa2102··on Buffett: Bitcoin not a currency [video]
Money is a store of value, a medium of exchange, and a unit of account. Currency is money that is created and backed by the faith and credit of a Government. Central banks control the money supply with the aim of controlling inflation and/or maximizing employment. Bitcoins supply is fixed making it deflationary. Bitcoins function more like a commodity than a currency.
kaa2102··on Braintree is giving $50k in processing to every startup
Fantastic! That's a great way to delight your customers.
kaa2102··on Stripe Checkout
I am getting ready to launch a product. I was using Wepay until they eliminated their checkout form. Switched to Stripe, read up on the API, and implemented the form. Now you tell me their is a simple checkout widget available. Sigh.
kaa2102··on How the world came to hate Silicon Valley
This reminds me of a tweet from Alexia Tsotsis saying that everyone will either work for Google or Walmart in the future. It looks like San Francisco is giving us a preview of that future.
kaa2102··on Candy Crush creator abandons 'candy' trademark efforts
Sounds like a win for the good guys.
kaa2102··on CandySwipe Open Letter to King regarding trademark
It is a travesty that trademark trolls are enriching themselves based on the hard work and creativity of others. I hope that Runsom Apps prevails.
kaa2102··on Elance Flappy Bird jobs
What is the point of diverting so much talent, money and energy towards such an aimless pursuit? Entertainment has value, but only to a certain limit.
