k4ch0w··on Hackers claim to have breached Okta systems
Yes, this is very common especially when you're living off the land. You take over the one unmonitored host and then you use the internal tools as if you were a normal employee.
k4ch0w··on Smart-TV blocklist for Pi-Hole
They would need to have a fallback in case people block DoH.

I think this is way further out than people may realize. I've done pentesting in a lot of different office networks and 53/UDP is open for all, but not 443/TCP unless you're a known device.

k4ch0w··on Google mandates workers back to Silicon Valley, other offices from April 4
What if the person has more skills to where it takes less time to perform the same task?

I.E a junior that is just learning terraform vs. a staff that has used it 3 years?

k4ch0w··on Google mandates workers back to Silicon Valley, other offices from April 4
You're actually the majority, the people wanting to go back to the office are the minority. You'll see in the fine print Google allowed certain employee's the ability to go remote. Basically, the high performers and talent they can't afford to lose to their competition.

People have had a taste of not having to spend time getting ready in the morning, can take their kids to school, and forget an hour commute. You would be hard pressed to find many banging on the door to go back to the office. I know of one person in my circle out of about 30 who want to go back. His reason is lack of boundaries with his family about when he's at work.

I personally would never go back to an office, it's not worth my finite time.

I think you'll lose some talented employees if you don't allow WFH. I think it will take time to see how this plays out.
k4ch0w··on I'm so sorry everyone. Or: why I'm switching to Cloudflare
You know Amazon wasn't profitable as well right? These things take more time than people would like to admit. The whole point of investing is finding those gems you believe in. Cloudflare is one of mine. The physical infrastructure they have in place, their network expertise and their consistent ability to try new things make me think they will either be bought or move to be an extremely profitable company in the future.
k4ch0w··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
Amen to this one. It’s a shame you have to choose between tokio or async std too. Why hasn’t Rust standardized a single engine?
k4ch0w··on Ask HN: What do you do with your homelab?
It's used for getting better with new tech. I use them to run crawlers, Jellyfin, Rust builds :-p, code on, experiment, perf test I guess just random things that come up. It's good to understand building and configuring one yourself and how it's made and I also like to have a local backup of my photos.
k4ch0w··on Ask HN: How was your interviewing experience this cycle?
a. 0

b. 15ish

c. 3

d. Systems Design, distributed systems, communication

d. 3

e. Took PTO

k4ch0w··on Ask HN: When to Quit?
If you're thinking about it, it's time. Prepare your resume and start looking. It's a great time in the market to get a new job. Seeing raises from 20-80% from some people I know in my network.
k4ch0w··on Netflix’s Prices Are Rising Faster Than Cable
So, my family shares their subscriptions. One pays for Netflix, another Youtube and the other Hulu. We all just keep it running on our end while the others mooch off each other's accounts.
k4ch0w··on How to Be Useless
That subreddit is more about not slaving away your time working 2-3 jobs to barely get by. It's people waking up to the fact that they are always busy and always behind and to the idea that working hard doesn't always equate to doing well in life.
k4ch0w··on Ask HN: Are Microsoft development stack and Azure a dead-end career path?
It’s just changing. The knowledge is still useful but I think I wouldn’t invest heavily today. They are working hard on working well with Linux. Look at WSL and .net core. Azure, now hosts more Linux VMs than Windows. Their cloud will be a competitor for sure however I think long term GCP may overtake them.

Would I go hard learning C#, kernel32, IIS and MSVC today? No. I would bet against a windows desktop environment in 15 years time, however that’s just me. We also see a shift from Active Directory as well for managing your users.

It’s still in demand and useful however. One thing I will say from personal experience, overseas clients use Microsoft more than the US ones. In Israel, I swear every company was using Microsoft’s stack.

I would just go in with a I can learn anything attitude in interviews and not get stuck on being boxed into A Microsoft environment.

k4ch0w··on Ask HN: Are Microsoft development stack and Azure a dead-end career path?
From my experience, out of the big 5 they pay the lowest.
k4ch0w··on T-Mobile begins blocking iPhone users from enabling iCloud Private Relay in US
And go where? I've had bad experiences with service with AT&T and Verizon in my area, Washington State. It's shockingly spotty.
k4ch0w··on Ask HN: Why does a busy man build a shed?
I've been spending my time wiring my house for ethernet. Sure, I could pay someone it would save me time and money but I've learnt a lot about my house and how to fix dry wall :-p. I've had to make 5 different Home Depot runs in the last two weeks cause I always discover something new.

I think a lot of us are type A, we can't sit still but also know our brains need to recoup and do something else. I tried to write some code but honestly I'd rather finish my ethernet project. Life is a marathon not a sprint. You gotta recharge sometimes and honestly you may learn something different that shapes how you think. Steve Jobs always said Calligraphy was the reason he thought about fonts on a GUI. Why the hell was he taking that class instead of hustling? :-p

It's completely wise. We aren't designed to just do one thing over and over. Life is so much more than building a SaaS or making money. You know we could go tomorrow right? Anything could happen and the future isn't guaranteed. Obviously, stay motivated and keep driving but sometimes you gotta replenish your gas tank and take care of your physical/mental health.

k4ch0w··on Internet Archive as a default host-of-record for startups
I think he's referring to something like IPFS.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InterPlanetary_File_System

http://ipfs.io

You can put the storage costs on the nodes because storage at archive.org's scale adds up, especially when it's run by volunteers.

k4ch0w··on Ask HN: Is the Great Resignation in tech real? If so, why?
Higher wages. I worked for a Fortune 500 company and got a 85% raise by leaving.
k4ch0w··on Ask HN: Do you tell your salary to people/family/friends outside your industry?
I tell people in my industry willingly. I don't think it should be secret and it allows other people to barter for what they are worth.

I've found the tech salary is much higher than other fields and I've learnt to shut my mouth about it as it can make other people uncomfortable because its 10X what they get.

k4ch0w··on New Microsoft Study of 60k Employees: Remote Work Threatens Innovation
Didn't they just build new buildings in Redmond? How do you measure this? How do you explain companies that were fully remote before the pandemic building a new innovative product? Sounds like fluff.
k4ch0w··on How can I take down a Chrome extension that is malicous
I'd use a sandbox for Chrome then. You can use docker to spin up a temporary Chromium instance and then delete it after. It would have no visibility into your host filesystem. You can also just use a VM.
k4ch0w··on HTML over DNS: Serving Blog Content over DNS
Well, allowlist to a known DNS server and block anything on DNS that isn't allowlisted.
k4ch0w··on HTML over DNS: Serving Blog Content over DNS
Packet size is a really good detection for this. DNS packets should only be so big ;)
k4ch0w··on Ask HN: Are there any good discussion forums left?
I don't know, this place feels like the last haven of real conversations going on besides blind. I think people here do a good job with disagreements and provide good evidence to convince others.

I don't want to discount you, but I'm skeptical. You are new and I'm guessing you got banned.

Could you provide an examples of where this happened and one of the important narratives?

Can you define wrong viewpoints and give an example?
k4ch0w··on The 'Great Resignation' is really the 'Great Discontent'
I made sure to wrap up my work before I left. I sympathize with you on that one but there is always more work to be done. You shouldn't need to work to catch up when you're back. You'll catch up as your time permits but don't sacrifice your personal health for a job.
k4ch0w··on The 'Great Resignation' is really the 'Great Discontent'
I stayed home and unplugged all work devices. I would just focus on your hobbies and improving your living situation or see your friends (Depending on where you live I know this can be hard for covid reasons). I took two weeks and I feel a lot better. Sometimes you just need to step away from the grind.
k4ch0w··on Apple is now an antifragile company
I think my #1 reason to stay Apple for the foreseeable years is that they put Privacy up there as a value. It makes all it's money from hardware and not my data. Once you understand how Google makes it's money it doesn't make you want to use it's products.

Homekit may not be as good as Alexa/Google assistant for home automation but it makes an effort to keep all your data local and not in a cloud. A small minority of us really value that.

I understand for regular people though it's really just a status symbol. I spent X on a phone cause I'm doing well in life.

k4ch0w··on Tech CEO Says Workers Get Too Much Pay and Benefits
Maybe CEOs get paid too much for the value they bring? If my company’s head said this, it would be an indication to leave because clearly they don’t value what you bring to the table.
k4ch0w··on From stolen laptop to inside the company network
Agreed man. If developers are resorting to this the policy is wrong, not the developers.
k4ch0w··on From stolen laptop to inside the company network
64 character password... no. I get it for password cracking purposes but they should make it hard to ever move to that stage in the first place.

If they are stuck on that policy, they should give you a smart card/yubikey heck even a fingerprint reader (You can't rotate these :-p ) to unlock your device.

You will just end up copying and pasting it around. I'd rather avoid that as there's many ways to copy out your clipboard with Javascript or a malware payload that somehow got onto your host.
