juanpablo··on [dead]
So, at 27 you're still a kid? Guess the 30's are really the new 20's.
juanpablo··on Déformation professionnelle
In Spanish is also a common expression (at least among some professionals)
juanpablo··on Old Japanese maps on Google Earth unveil prejudices
I agree. I was referring to the prejudices of some Japanese people, not Google's. Now this issues are being discussed publicly. I think that's a good thing.
juanpablo··on Alpha male programmers aren't keeping women out
Not directly, but through role models in movies, TV, etc.
juanpablo··on Ask HN: Open Source Text Editor
KDE/Linux: Kate

GNOME: Geany

Windows: Notepad++

Mac: Buy Coda

juanpablo··on Apollo Astronauts Didn't Need Heavy Boots
You are right. I also think the Apollo astronauts probably did use heavy boots for that reason. But you're missing the point of the article.
juanpablo··on Physics and Entrepreneurism (2007)
The article might be interesting but his "grand goal" not so much.

See the customer reviews on Amazon about the aforementioned book: http://www.amazon.com/New-Kind-Science-Stephen-Wolfram/dp/15...

juanpablo··on What is the best CSS book?
Trascending CSS
juanpablo··on Why Programmers Suck at CSS Design
What works for me is to think that white space isn't "empty space" but instead "space filled with white".
juanpablo··on Pirate Bay officially loses case
Peter Sunde said:

“We can’t pay and we wouldn’t pay if we could. If I would have money I would rather burn everything I owned.”

juanpablo··on Beautiful Horizontally Centered Menus/Tabs/List. No CSS hacks. Full cross-browser.
It works for me (same Chrome version)
juanpablo··on Python’s lambda is broken
Same thing happens with closures in JavaScript
juanpablo··on GM and Segway create new vehicle
It's only feasible right now in a controlled environment (all the drivers are the same AI and no humans doing unexpected things). Otherwise is a hard and complex AI problem.
juanpablo··on Five Founders

juanpablo··on Ride the Snake: reddit keynote at PyCon 09
A couple months ago, Ricardo Galli - spanish hacker and creator of the open-source reddit-like "Meneame" - posted an explanation of his algorithm for doing that.

juanpablo··on No hackers in our startup group. Oh oh!
Make a lot of images, one for each screen change, and then 'test' the application with your friends as if it where really working. Show, don't tell.

Take their feedback and improve. Convince some friend programmer to join you and also learn to program yourselves

juanpablo··on DOJ Seeks Jail Time for Music Sharing
"A quick search of popular bittorrent trackers reveals that a torrent of many of the tracks in question was available in March of 2007, a full 13 months before Cogill's supposed initial leak."

juanpablo··on Study: Old Age Begins at 27
I don't buy it.

I suspect that it is more related to dull/stressful work environments than age (at 22 you're either still in college or fresh out from it).

juanpablo··on See(), an alternative to Python's dir()
I use

import readline, rlcompleter; readline.parse_and_bind("tab: complete")

(executed at PYTHONSTARTUP) for tab completion.

juanpablo··on The Baby-Eating Aliens
From the 4th part of the same story

http://www.overcomingbias.com/2009/02/interlude-with-the-con...

"'Do you know there was a time when nonconsensual sex was illegal?' (...) 'The Prohibition, right? During the first century pre-Net? I expect everyone was glad to have that law taken off the books'."

WTF?

juanpablo··on Crackulous developer wants people to stop pirating his App Store piracy app
The main site (http://cydia.hackulo.us) is a scam too. It says: "Please wait as cydia loads!" and then "Not loading? Get help at http://hackulo.us!". But of course it'll never load: it's a static page without javascript or a meta refresh tag!
juanpablo··on Facebook founder finds a way to profit from its members' private data
So change it every week for a month... and then stop using it.
juanpablo··on Good guys finish...
Do you care?
juanpablo··on Tipjoy (YC W08) now allows payments via Twitter
Too many "pay words"! I don't know if that's the case but you should really check they aren't part of a casual tweet.

Eg.

"I'm not going to pay @joe $1000 for an old ipod!" or

"Everyone! Give @bob $10 to buy beer".

juanpablo··on Python 3.0 Released
