jtmarmon··on Show HN: Retool: Excel-like, with higher order primitives
you may want to uh...branch out a bit. the widget picker in particular is basically identical
jtmarmon··on Show HN: Strukt – a visual shell for tabular data
I'm not having this issue. Is it possible you're running a proxy on your laptop (like charlesproxy) and forgot to disable it or add SSL proxying for www.freerobotcollective.com
jtmarmon··on Facebook is an attack on the open web
facebook has a certain level of monopoly over people's attention. i don't think a little snafu like this is suddenly going to make advertisers think they should stop advertising on facebook.
jtmarmon··on Slap – A Sublime-like terminal-based text editor
the author did confirm it's a question, so that clears that up

Common Living | Senior Software Engineer | NYC | www.common.com

The company:

Common partners with real estate owners and developers throughout the US to create community-minded homes. By doing this, we’re addressing the fundamental supply and demand issues that underlie housing in major cities today. We currently have 6 operating homes in NYC, 2 in SF, and 1 in D.C, and many more on the way. We're only a year and a half old, so when we say we move fast, we actually mean it. Common is currently about 40 employees.

The role:

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the team. Real estate is a complex and highly regulated domain, and our community-based model adds more complexity to the mix. Automating this complexity through software is the Digital Product Team's core focus right now, and it's a real challenge. We use Domain Driven Design, and are looking for someone with experience building software around complex domains (specific DDD experience would be great too!). We use Rails.

jtmarmon··on Fourteen Months with Clojure
Most of the macros you'll need are already part of clojure core, thankfully
jtmarmon··on Fourteen Months with Clojure
Although the tooling is great, I found it super frustrating that you basically have to use the entire suite of prescribed tools to feel productive. Basically everything except emacs sucks with clojure, especially if you're a vim user. I found that pretty frustrating. Vim fireplace sucks. Then if you want to use a gui editor with a vim plugin you have to abandon the vim world and use editor-esque paredit plugins (since no one is developing vim-style paredit for vim-editor-plugins) gasps for air.

Then finally there's emacs which I really don't want to get started with.

jtmarmon··on Fourteen Months with Clojure
I loved the either-monad solution. The problem is something I've experienced many times in my clojure adventures, usually resulting in either dirtying the function in question with its own, case specific logging or creating the if-let monstrosity you demonstrated.

As a side note: there's something very comforting when you immediately empathize so strongly with a programming problem someone is writing about

jtmarmon··on Instacart Closes Latest Funding Round at $3.4B Valuation
speaking personally, in NYC (and presumably other cities where you often don't own a car and instead use public transit) it's quite a pain to get groceries. if you're walking back, you're carrying a lot of crap that's broken to breakage or spillage. then there's the risk you might have too much to carry yourself, then what do you do? getting them delivered is a big help and above a minor convenience for me - i just wouldn't buy groceries otherwise

jtmarmon··on Cloudflare data still in Bing caches
Oh shit. Got it. Also Jesus fuck
jtmarmon··on Cloudflare data still in Bing caches
Wouldn't full SSL traffic be encrypted if leaked and therefore kind of irrlevant?
jtmarmon··on Global Infrastructure Partners Gets Big Returns In Sleepy Sector
...become "the former head of General Electric’s infrastructure business and Jack Welch protégé" probably
jtmarmon··on YC Annual Letter 2017
you're right - after rereading I realize that it's totally equivalent
jtmarmon··on YC Annual Letter 2017
"The percentage of women who apply to YC is roughly the same as the percentage of women who get funded. The same is true for Black and Latino founders."

I'm guessing what he means to say here is that if x% of the applicant pool is woman/black/latino, then x% of the accepted pool is woman/black/latino, right? The way it's phrased it sounds like every woman/black/latino who applies is accepted

jtmarmon··on The world's deepest ocean trenches are packed with pollution
yes, but I imagine by "future undersea colony" Apocryphon is referring to a colony of humans...
jtmarmon··on The world's deepest ocean trenches are packed with pollution
yes...i think the parent is referring to humans, not aliens.
jtmarmon··on GitHub changes topbar to dark theme
i think OP did it to break the "this link has already been posted" HN filter
jtmarmon··on iPhone 8 Concept Design
technically the iphone 7's don't have physical home buttons...they're part of the screen and the "click" feeling you get is actually haptic feedback. try clicking the button when the phone is off and you'll find it does nothing (which is quite sad feeling, actually)
jtmarmon··on Parse is shutting down today
uhhh...sorry to say but I don't think you're getting that data out anymore.

>When your app is disabled, you will not be able to access the data browser or export any data, and your applications will no longer be able to access the Parse API.

jtmarmon··on What a good commit message looks like (2011)
generally when I'm trying this stuff I'll make a new branch to work off of and deploy from that. when I've figured out how it needs to work, I'll squash the commits and merge into master.
jtmarmon··on A trip down the League of Legends graphics pipeline
You might want to reconsider blizzard...overwatch is doing extremely well and has not been out for very long.

Just for off the cuff figures, the LoL subreddit has 942k subs, and overwatch has 743k subs. Overwatch is very promising

jtmarmon··on Atlassian acquires Trello for $425M
yes that's exactly what the parent is saying. 10M at a 100M post money valuation is 10% of the company. 10% of 400M is 40M - a 4x return
jtmarmon··on Rust vs C Pitfalls
It's important for a lot of people and that's why it's marketed like that. It's also one of the most unique aspects of the language, and the primary goal of the entire project.

According to steveklabnik, about 50% of Firefox's critical security bugs were due to memory safety issues (source: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-fweBvtifA&t=27m20s>)

Presumably you don't think mozilla exclusively hires shitty developers.

jtmarmon··on Show HN: Rocket – Web Framework for Rust
i understand your argument but if you look at <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13246361>, it seems clear to me the use of syntax extensions created an awesome developer experience that would be otherwise impossible (sure you could use the built in typesystem but then you wouldn't have human readable routes in the source)
jtmarmon··on Show HN: Rocket – Web Framework for Rust
that is some truly incredible developer ux
jtmarmon··on Announcing TypeScript 2.1
ahh interesting, that seems like a pretty significant difference. just to clarify, this means that you wouldn't be able to do things like:

if (my_var instance_of MyCustomType)

in TS, but you could in normal statically typed languages, correct?

jtmarmon··on Pebble's next step
"Going bankrupt" canary
jtmarmon··on Announcing TypeScript 2.1
I was asking about the native languages themselves and their typesystems, not the compile-to-js versions of those languages.

Regardless, I don't see much of a difference between TS -> JS and haskell->JS and scala -> JS. It's all from one language to another. the fact that TS is still considered a form of javascript is kind of irrelevant other than for semantics
