jthrowsitaway··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
Assuming you're talking about iMessage, comparing that to E-mail (GMail) is literally apples and oranges.

He achieved "FI" early on then.

That's awesome! I have very fond memories of playing 1 vs 100 on Xbox Live and was sad when they canned it.

Thanks, but I couldn't watch more than 30 seconds of that video. The cuts every 3 seconds or when the speaker took a slight pause is maddening.
jthrowsitaway··on Sue Big Oil
My question still stands. We're near ATH of oil production and are a net exporter. Sure, the Boogeyman wants to kill oil, but has he been able to do that with great success in 1.5 years as president?
jthrowsitaway··on Sue Big Oil
This is how it works in a free market economy. The incumbent (oil and gas) is directly state sponsored in the US.

> the US government alone spends $20 billion every year on direct fossil fuel subsidies. Of that figure, around $16 billion goes towards oil and gas, while the remaining $4 billion benefits the coal industry.

How do you support your argument that the current administration is being effective in killing off oil? We are still a net exporter of oil [0] and crude oil production is about where it was at in late 2018. It took a dive during COVID-19 and has been recovering since.

Same. The Logitech Cordless Optical TrackMan is my favorite device. I wish they still made them (or something like it.)

We evaluated a bunch of solutions and came to that conclusion as well. Everything we do is in code (Terraform) and will gladly pay for something that has friendly APIs and an already existing Terraform module. Conversely, we'll not engage with or throw away anything that doesn't have friendly APIs.
jthrowsitaway··on Google's AI doesn't understand restaurant menus
Google likes to push you into a textual/parsed format of the menu, which is often incomplete and difficult to navigate. Just show me the pictures of the menu, please.
jthrowsitaway··on Reduced air pollution leads to higher crop yields
Pollution has a different interpretation depending on your body composition. Some microbes thrive on Nitrogen Oxide.
jthrowsitaway··on Google Cloud: Major packet loss between multiple regions – Europe and Asia
Indeed. Not sure why that term is misused so much. There's nothing dark about fiber that's being used.

> A dark fibre or unlit fibre is an unused optical fibre, available for use in fibre-optic communication

Ah, ok. I saw the S3 URLs and assumed that's the platform you're using.

As an AMZN stock holder, I love that this "competition" to AWS is hosted on AWS. Amazon still wins!
jthrowsitaway··on Show HN: Unreal Speech – Text-to-Speech API
If you're trying to sell this product and showing text that random people from the internet have inputted, then yes this is a terrible idea. It's only a matter of time before "Hitler was right" is displayed on your site. Do you want the trollings of dorks associated with your brand?

Yes, but newer versions of Android let you block categories of notifications for apps. Things like story post notifications are blocked for my apps while DMs aren't.

This is fine and all, but there are also subtle differences in standard CLI tools depending on the implementation. I'm used to GNU stdutils, and butt heads with the macOS and BusyBox implementations.

jthrowsitaway··on You probably don’t need AWS and are better off without it
Totally agree. It's been a few years since I used AWS, but back then they shipped half -assed products that didn't have a consistent feel with the rest of their products and weren't feature complete out of the box.

I remember using their email service (SES) and wanting to read logs for emails that have been sent. The only option was to point log events at an SQS queue. So, you had to create one of those, assign proper roles and access controls, etc. After that, you need to dump or consume the queue somehow. I can't remember if SQS could dump to S3, but if it could, then OK: create a bucket, assign roles, etc. Now, to parse the S3 bucket contents somehow... Wait, what was I doing? Trying to read some damn log files or set up a Rube Goldberg machine for the log files?

I get it. It's a modular system, and that can be very powerful. Sometimes I just want to do something simple without going down a multi-hour (or day) rabbit hole. The inability to perform simple actions on AWS without looping in tons of their other products means indefinite job security for a lot of people. IaC and templates for actions like the above alleviate this a bit, but it's still a dreary landscape.

jthrowsitaway··on Ethernet SSDs – Hands-On with the Kioxia EM6 NVMeoF
I used iSCSI with iPXE back in the day to boot a whole network (~120 machines) of Windows boxes. It was served on a single server by a RAID 10 array of 15k SCSI disks built on Debian. Good times; I'd forgotten about that! iSCSI was solid even with Windows, so you know it's good.
