Well this didn't get very far:

Actually you are slightly wrong (but only if you are british). Per the merriam webster editor:

jtchang··on Why are glasses so expensive? The industry prefers to keep that blurry (2019)
That's a great deal. Were they 1.74 index?
jtchang··on Google officially launches Equiano subsea cable
I like to ask non-techies how they imagine their text messages go from the US to Europe. Most people think it is some form of wireless communication like satellite or cellular. They are quite surprised when they realize that it is just one really long string over the Atlantic.
jtchang··on Why JWTs Suck as Session Tokens (2017)
How does this solve it? You still need to wait 1 minute.

Those screenshots look pretty convincing to me.
jtchang··on SEC charges VMware with misleading investors by obscuring financial performance
This is fairly common for public companies but sadly not many get caught. Also the fine is hilariously tiny compared to say this instance almost 2 decades ago:

I almost wonder if the SEC is slowly losing its teeth.

jtchang··on Protohackers: Server Programming Challenge
Fun! One of my college networking classes had us write a file transfer program. Except the server was buggy (on purpose!) and it would corrupt bits here and there. They had a public leaderboard of people who could transfer the most amount of data over this very lossy link.

I originally was planning to implement some sort of forward error correction but then realized I could just use UDP and hammer the server with duplicate packets. Not very elegant but got me close to the top of fastest transfer speeds over a lossy link.

jtchang··on Reviving the Pakon film scanner
I'm in awe at the level of expertise required to dive this deep into the kernel.

At one point there are very few people who have even looked at piece of code you are looking at.

Are you going to release patches so at least other people can replicate things?

jtchang··on If You Want This Job, We Must Interview You Forever
Interviewing is terrible. I'll just say keep your head up and don't let it get to you. It definitely does not have anything to do with your worth.

That said there are a lot of people on HN. I would update your profile with at least your site/resume and what you are looking for.

jtchang··on Resolving an unusual WiFi issue
I believe this can happen on macos as well.
jtchang··on Tesla Virtual Power Plant
There was a paper I read about a decade back about the existential crisis of power companies. After everyone has the ability to generate and store power locally in their home why do you need power companies anymore? Or will they even be able to charge as much. How will they keep up with the maintenance of the grid? Some interesting questions but I guess we will see the answers in the coming years.
jtchang··on Ask HN: How to price a service that saves hundreds of engineering hours?
I'm interested in trialing this service. Cypress takes forever. Feel free to reach out.
jtchang··on Algorithms you should know before you take system design interviews
First time I saw geohashing. Can't this result in some lopsided squares? The way it is described has a standard rectangle projection. But those are inaccurate due to the earth being spherical. So the areas on top and bottom will be much larger.

To be fair I've heard of most of these in my career but they are fairly specialized. If you are conducting a system design interview and expecting the candidate to know one of these I'd suspect there is a bit of bias there (unless that is their area of study).

jtchang··on Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?
Is that yaml not an array of strings?

["x","y","z"]

jtchang··on Engineers investigating NASA’s Voyager 1 telemetry data
I wonder if we will ever get a chance to retrieve our probe.

Or maybe some kind soul will return it.

jtchang··on UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg
Something interesting to note about pegs is that they can be quite exploitable. Some banks/countries have tried to defend their peg but in the end it can ruinous (or wildly profitable) depending on what side you are on.

jtchang··on Reliably Send an HTTP Request as a User Leaves a Page
Wow there are a lot of new features in web browsers lately just targeting analytics and ads. Makes me wonder what other use cases have beacons as the solution.
jtchang··on Managers with MBAs are the best at taking money from workers and not much else [pdf]
Why is it stupid to vote with your dollars?
jtchang··on Explain the first 10 lines of Twitter's source code to me
Is this sarcasm?
jtchang··on What made World of Warcraft's environments so compelling?
I picked a race that didn't start in Ironforge. I remember not really knowing what to expect. I may have taken a griffin or just used a boat. But the sheer feeling of awe when you enter. The music changes and truly get a scale of how large the place is. I'm not sure I'll ever get to experience that again.
jtchang··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
I can feel my blood boiling for you. In fact I'm in the market for a new phone and stories like this make me actively want to avoid Samsung. As companies get larger and larger they will tend to make choices that are suboptimal to consumers.

Cynical me says that Samsung is seeing above average warranty claims on these foldable phones. Thus they need to get them down so some manager somewhere decides that they will enforce the policies more strictly with small scratches and dents outright disqualifying claims. Lo and behold this reduces the warranty claims paid out but in the grand scheme of things completely demolishes any customer loyalty.

I wonder if author reached out via twitter or some other social media channel to have Samsung comment.

Also I have to think what Apple or Google would do. I'm pretty sure Apple would just straight up repair the phone with very few questions (that has been my experience). Google you'd have to go through a longer warranty process but my guess is they'd be more lenient and eventually you'd get a new or repaired phone.

Samsung is losing hard here.

jtchang··on Mark Cuban's pharmacy started with a cold email
The point is that I have to drive to a local walmart and deal with insurance. That sounds harder.
jtchang··on Ask HN: Where to buy good quality furniture?
Living spaces is pretty solid.
jtchang··on Bell Labs Org Chart (1980)
Interesting how the organization was broken out.

What is the difference between "Engineering Information" and "Computer and Engineering Information" groups?

jtchang··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Whoops I was off. It's around 32 cents per KWH.
jtchang··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
How is a heatpump more economical than natural gas? I am in bay area and it can cost anywhere from 15-20 cents a kwh for electricity.
jtchang··on Ask HN: Remotely helping elderly parents?
VNC Connect by RealVNC is good. So is remote desktop and/or zoom. I'm in the same situation.
