jquast··on Ask HN: How can a non-techie mom regain access to her FB account?
Why not you?

How could she know someone at Facebook? Why would you think this is helpful advice?

You surely behave like an ex-FB employee

jquast··on Lead poisoning among US children
Just bought a 1985 home in rural Michigan with well water, testing for lead was never required by any part of the process. Post-sale I paid for a detailed water analysis, about $200, which found 4PPB of Lead. I called a few plumbers and they weren’t willing to do any inspection or make any recommendations.

It cost about $6k in total to install a (Kinetico) water softener & RO system to remove it from my drinking water.

I previously lived in Flint during the early few years of the changes that introduced high lead levels in the city drinking water. I tell this to doctors but they suggest there isn’t any tests they can do, as it is deposited into tissues and bones and not really found in blood tests, that such tests are typically for children.

I guess I’m just saying there is no doubt I’ve had a great deal of lead in my drinking water throughout my life so I think a lot about how it shaped me and the communities I’ve lived in, how it shaped my experience with school and work.

How many people are being treated for anxiety, anger, or depression in a seemingly incurable medicated loop, all the while unknowingly exposed to lead?

Anyway as a PSA, I suggest that you should only believe that your water is lead-free when it has been tested directly from the tap and you have a report of 0PPB. Landlords and home sellers have a financial incentive to ensure that such testing is never done, and if lead is found, I don’t know what can be done other than pulling out your wallet one way or another

jquast··on FAQs: Why we don’t have them (2013)
FAQ was for newsgroups, to reduce the noise of so many people asking the same questions, answered by "read the FAQ" which was usually posted periodically, http://www.harley.com/usenet/usenet-tutorial/faqs-frequently...
jquast··on Ask HN: What are the best and worst command-line interfaces you have used?
May I suggest to use “zipinfo” or “tar -t” to check the contents of the archive before extracting
jquast··on Ask HN: Is there a god-mode in Windows for users like Bill Gates?
Related fact: Microsoft Windows was and many other products were developed on SCO Unix (xenix) https://microsoft.fandom.com/wiki/Xenix

Microsoft azure runs on Linux https://www.wired.com/2015/09/microsoft-using-linux-run-clou...

Maybe WSL was just an internal company tool used to keep their own employees from switching to Mac and Linux or keeping them from running away from the job entirely. It really is an impossible OS to develop on, that malware fucker can’t be disabled and absolutely ruins I/O performance

jquast··on Heroes of Might and Magic V – Hammers of Bait and Switch
Sorry my bad it is the very last tool used, which does in fact lead to success, I guess documenting all this other stuff might help somebody somewhere, or at least persuade people to skip the superfluous efforts and just go right to procmon
jquast··on Heroes of Might and Magic V – Hammers of Bait and Switch
I would suggest to use procmon.exe, all file and registry accesses could have been monitored without any disassembly and the problem could probably have be resolved much easier.
jquast··on Principles of Green Software Engineering
What is the carbon footprint of the extra carriage return character in DOS and Windows text files?
jquast··on LimeSDR
sorry maybe we misunderstand each other, I just got my license last year but this FAQ link reads, "Is the Ham It Up capable of transmitting as well as receiving? Even on lower frequencies? -- Yes, it is bidirectional, so you can transmit and receive on any frequency within range, provided that you have a compatible transceiver, like the HackRF One. "
jquast··on LimeSDR
Ham It Plus can go upconvert as low as 300Hz, compatible with any SDR you just shift the frequency in software https://support.nooelec.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005812474
jquast··on What cats do when we’re not looking
It is common for a cat with urinary tract infection (UTI) to pee outside of the litter box, it may be trying to communicate, "it hurts when I pee", and choosing your bed because it thinks that's the best place to communicate with you https://bluecrossvethospital.com/cat-urinary-tract-infection...
jquast··on Early Retirement: The Depressing Truth
Does “the author” refer to himself as “the author” 4x in this article or is there some kind of co-authorship at play? Gosh it’s jarring, the commenter doesn’t understand the tone.

jquast··on Birds are dying in the United States and no one knows why
Yet another HN anecdote—I found a sick baby bird a few weeks ago with swollen eyes in northern Michigan, feather loss on its head, a mother bird circling and crying about it. it soon died and I buried it and also put away the bird bath and feeder, I suggest everyone do the same, another article[1] suggested a possible bacteria infection. Baths and feeders are super-spreader locations to these birds.

jquast··on Alternative shell with native support for JSON, YAML, TOML, CSV, etc.
We could use pseudo pty’s to drive a remote bash through transpilation of a local shell if we wanted to fix that problem. It’s not unpossible.
jquast··on An Exploration of JSON Interoperability Vulnerabilities
The real problem is the programmer mindset of “good for this purpose, good for every purpose”

There so many better suited protocols out there, like avro, I don’t understand the Json obsession for so many poorly suited applications.

Reminds me of markdown vs anything else, I guess because github’s default readme is markdown we now have developers who don’t know anything else, like restructuredtext, “but I already know markdown, so..” .. so we see hundreds of markdown “flavors”, junktown parsers, and crazy pandoc wrapping scripts to do cross references and compile into chapters and this and that extension or tool...

when the things they seek are built right into RST — just too lazy to have to learn it, or to ask our team members to have to learn it?

It’s sad when we make the least effort. Think of business value, stretch your abilities to suit the needs of software design, do not limit design to what you are already comfortable with.

jquast··on People are leaving S.F. USPS data shows where they went
Change of address forms are a scam, it is “free” because USPS sells the data to advertisers and your new mailbox gets stuffed with junk mail.

I never use the service, only naive or desperate people would. It’s easy to login to all important accounts and change your address today, there is no practical need for a COA form.

So USPS hasn’t any idea about my fleeing of Silicon Valley last year, and that’s fine with me !

jquast··on Build your own Command Line with ANSI escape codes (2016)
Blessings is no longer maintained, but the blessed fork adds window OS, keyboard input, and 24-bit color support and still makes regular improvements.

I co-maintain blessings and made the blessed fork because blessings development stalled by the primary maintainer 5 or more years ago

Also please mention rich another great library!

Best wishes all and make great CLI apps!! Happy Friday :)

jquast··on Ask HN: Why did you switch from Mac to Windows?
Forced to by employer

I grew up on Windows and did win32/C++ for years during the XP era. I'm over it.

The OS kills hundreds of hours of typical productivity each year, with forced updates at working hours, or fail your computer entirely, Windows defender that thrashes source and build folders, settings reverting and being ignored (like please update off-hours and please ignore my build folders...)

i never thought I'd say it but even Linux has become easier to use in the sense it is not hostile against business users performing work during work hours?! I can leave everything just as I like it on a Friday evening and jump back into it Monday morning in mere seconds, not so with Windows.

I think Microsoft is part of an international conspiracy to keep upper-middle class mediocre white men employed doing barely any work. Making an unpredictable ever-changing UX, a resource-starving OS, and random forced updates are a big part of this.

Windows is the OS for the boomer generation, may they die together in peace.

jquast··on 1:60 scale Boeing 777 made from manila folders
People said the same thing for those who invented email, the World Wide Web, tcp/ip, and other technologies.

Nobody saw the value in it at the time of doing it. That’s the thing about having true creative vision, to also have the conviction to do those things that nobody else sees the value of doing.

jquast··on Does saying “Fuck You AWS” constitute offensive content?
I made fourteen requests over sixteen days to delete my amazon.com account.

I followed up and re-submitted almost every day. Each time I was told to wait 24-48 hrs and someone would contact me to complete the process, and I would follow up 24 hours later to repeat the process over again when nobody contacted me.

When I finally gave up, Something like a week of 1+ hour/day chats, I deleted all of the information I had control over (address, CC’s, etc) to “anonymize” it at the very least. I then had a very juvenile idea to change my preferred first name to “FUCK” and lastname to “AMAZON” and made one last request.

Customer support deleted my account within the hour, no multi-step process, no “customer support specialist will contact you in 24-48hrs”, just an immediate deletion. Finally!!!

I’ve also learned a good lesson — delete any new online account after you create it, before conducting business. if it isn’t easy to do, then don’t use the service. Otherwise, create another. Most sites are just a button, or a chat request, but Amazon was very ridiculous, (equal to airbnb, which required me to send a photograph of myself and my DL, and then replied to say I have to wait another 90 days and do it again?!)

jquast··on John Carmack is reading and contributing to OpenBSD source code
It was for managing multi-site WAN, P2P radio, satellite, VPN links and VPN endpoints for employees. I can’t help that IT Infrastructure departments are erroneously adopting the term “devops” for themselves :(

Anyway best wishes Jim, shucks I ordered the first and second gen PcEngines and Winston CM11a radios from netgate.com long ago, and many since, thank you for running a proper store!

jquast··on John Carmack is reading and contributing to OpenBSD source code
I’m sorry you feel this way, maybe if you could try contributing more positively to FOSS in some way and receive some accolades for yourself, you would not feel so spiteful about the attention Carmack receives.

I think you will find Carmack has contributed more to the hacker ecosystem than anyone else if you just take a very shallow peek.

I would suggest to start by reading the source code to Doom, it is surprisingly approachable and educational in several fields of math, geometry, data structures, and computer science. There are even books to help you understand it, heck, there are a dozen or more books about Id software and John Carmack, so there are many authors and readers who feel very differently from you, maybe you could consider the reason. There are many things in our field that would have happened eventually, no matter who did it, but much of Carmack’s contributions really would not have happened without him, he really is in a league of his own.

It’s really amazing to me that you feel so negatively towards people who have endearment for one of the hacker community’s greatest contributors. I can only guess that you might be very unhappy, for that I’m very sorry and I hope it turns around for you very soon.

jquast··on John Carmack is reading and contributing to OpenBSD source code
I tried many source contributions to OPENBSD when I was in school, but only one was accepted—-to fix a “house purchase overflow bug” in the command-line monopoly game from the BSD games collection, lol :)

I stopped hacking on it some years ago, but always contribute $$ when I’m well employed (currently not, sigh)

I’ve yet to work at a $JOB with anyone else who wishes to use OpenBSD, even in the places it is most appropriate, my most recent employer had someone under qualified as the devops lead so we had to use pfSense, an endless source of frustration of issues that couldn’t be addressed, but that I knew exactly how to address with OpenBSD, but, such is life. The most experienced people seem to have the least control, a common complaint in all industries, I’m sure.

I always encourage everyone to use many different Unix’s, it provides a much deeper understanding of everything you use, even if you end up only using Linux, anyway, it provides a much better perspective of what a distribution is and how to select the correct one even if you end up being forced into Linux anyway.

But just like how I always end up using python and JavaScript and Ubuntu Linux everywhere —- unless you’re in charge, it’s much like school, the whole team has to succumb to the lowest common denominator, the lowest also often being the boss or lead, who does very little hands-on work but feels making decisions of which Linux and which Language to use is their best contributing factor, lol
