johnatwork··on 1Password for Mac Moving to Electron
Man, this is like when someone was arguing with me that Right on Reds is not that impactful to the environment, they said something like "Oh on average it only cuts off 30 seconds off of someone's commute."

...Ooookay, now times that by everyone commuting.

johnatwork··on 1Password for Mac Moving to Electron
I, for one could not find the standalone. Now I feel like I've been had, and have a bad taste in my mouth. I'm moving to something else. Currently trying out Secrets for MacOS, it will be hard to work with my one PC as it's not crossplatform, but I think I can deal with that.
johnatwork··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
I have an EV, and yeah it takes more planning for longer trips, but that hasn't been too hard.

We can always charge _and_ take bathroom/lunch breaks (~1 hour). By the time we get back the car's back up to 80~90%.

johnatwork··on Don’t we all just want to use SQL on the front end?
I'm at a place where we've acquired a company that does something similar but through PHP/jQuery, and it's been a herculean effort to make any changes or improvements as there were no abstractions at hand. After many failed attempts at a re-tool/re-build, we've settled on showing a blank page that we then hijack to show a React page that's build on top.

New FE devs that come in now have a 6 month period where they must learn a new proprietary tech just so that we can circumvent what's already there, I would say that it's not a great idea if you have to work with other FE devs (who are not Full-stack) and if your app is of a significant size (YMMV I guess, we've had our own issues with GraphQL too).

johnatwork··on Lenovo’s new ThinkPad X1 Titanium Yoga is less than half an inch thick
I've tried switching away from my MacBook and each time I've been left underwhelmed by the build quality. Hopefully this will be built better than the past Lenovo X1 models that I've tried.
johnatwork··on Google Stories
"It's been an incredible journey, and we would like to thank all those who have shared it with us."
johnatwork··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
Well just by searching the terms "Long Term Covid effects" would yield you a lot of results.

But the ones talked about most are the long lasting Mental Fog, Depression, Muscle Pain, Long lasting Headaches, Heart and Respiratory issues.

And anecdotally, I know of a few folks in my Hockey league community of which I am involved in that have said that after having had COVID, that they have either felt in the ranges of nothing at all (super lucky), or have had extreme issues where they could not get back to any strenuous activity much less any activity involving more than walking. Most of these guys would be considered pretty fit, ranging from the ages of 16 to 50. In one case, they have had a constant headache for over a month which is just resolving now.

johnatwork··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
There's much more to it than just surviving right? There's more nuances than just survival rates, and there are other related complications at play here.
johnatwork··on X-COM
One of the top 5 games that I've ever played. I'm not a greatly skilled gamer, and this game is difficult but was somehow able to make it enjoyable.

Enough discoveries and surprises to keep you pressing on, it did a lot of things well, from load outs to inventory managements, to keeping countries happy. I can't wait to have some free time to play it again.

johnatwork··on Casino-like apps have drained people of millions
They have a few other similar games that uses the same tech and feel to them (Tanks instead of ships), but your point stands (and they are all F2P AFAIK, same formula).

I've had a insight as to what you're suspecting (for another similar game), and I can say that it is definitely something like the top 1% that generate most of the revenue, and the rest of the 99% serve as kind of an AI for them to dominate.

johnatwork··on How Do Computers Generate Random Numbers?
Roll20 has an interesting way of generating random numbers as well - https://wiki.roll20.net/QuantumRoll
johnatwork··on Kids and Time
I've actually went the other way, soon after my first kid was born, I had to stop being a manager pulling late nights, mulling over company issues during off-hours, and having work issues get to me.

I found it less stressful and better on my mental health to go back to becoming a programmer, although I have also made a bigger effort to leave work at work.

johnatwork··on New two-stroke engine design could help keep internal combustion around longer
This particular two stroke would need oil changes.

Some of the traditional ones did not because the oil was mixed with fuel to lubricate the seals that exist between the piston (part that moves up and down) and the cylinder (which houses the piston). In most engines that we refer to in cars, the lubrication happens from the bottom in the crankcase (where you see the rod beneath the piston).

johnatwork··on Picture Hanging Knot (2017)
I've always used a twisted wire, or Ashley's bend

johnatwork··on AirPods Pro
I have a pair of those cheap ones, they are great except:

- Pairing is a chore / Sometimes loses all info, so you are forced to forget and re-pair which takes time and fiddling on the phone and the device

- Forget pairing to more than one device

- Battery isn't great (down to 2 hours per charge now)

- Mic is unusable. When I get a call, I have to interrupt everything and pull out my phone (often times when I'm using these, I'm usually working and my hands are dirty).

- Connection issues at times for no reason

johnatwork··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
> The Apple Watch Series 3 is available on apple.com for $199.

Which is still a great value.

johnatwork··on New 2MW electric vehicle chargers could revolutionise mining industry
Not only is it much cheaper to maintain, but also a lot safer for the work site and workers to maintain as well.

Used motor oil is some nasty stuff, and spilt coolant is quite toxic (but attracts animals).

johnatwork··on Laptop Survey from r/thinkpad and r/mac
I'm not colorblind, but the colors chosen are hard to distinguish.
johnatwork··on Microsoft announces dual-screen Surface Neo
This is really clever design, and I like how they've incorporated the keyboard, giving you the freedom of the configuration. I just wish I could have a different OS underneath it all.

I really think the trick is not to try to hide the hinge, but to use it as a demarcator as seen here.

johnatwork··on Toyota is trying to put solar panels on a Prius to charge battery during the day
I totally agree with you, sometimes a small auxiliary tech has a breakthrough and all of a sudden it opens up a lot of doors.
johnatwork··on Google to Acquire Looker
1.5 years

Unless they say put out a statement to commit their efforts into keeping it the way it is.

If that statement comes out, then shorten it to 1 year.

johnatwork··on South Korea accepts geothermal plant probably caused destructive quake
Would it be worth it for something like this to be used in places that often have catastrophic earthquakes, to instead release scheduled mini-quakes every so often to relieve the pressure?
johnatwork··on AirPods
I use it while driving, in the winter times when I have gloves on, and sometimes when swimming or when my hands are full while cooking.

More often then not however, I find it infuriating at how bad it is at picking up "Hey Siri"

johnatwork··on Toyota Finally Has the Power in Electric Cars
For City driving or as a second car. A used Nissan Leaf is an incredible value, I'm saving about 200~250 a month in what I would have used in gas.
johnatwork··on Tableau Software Threatened? Rival Growing at 70% Just Raised $103M
Yeah I tend to ignore Contributor "articles" such as these, they are so one sided, and seem more like an ad than anything else.
johnatwork··on Chrome OS: Ready for Web Development [video]
But those cheap Chromebooks won't run Crostini right?
johnatwork··on Chrome OS: Ready for Web Development [video]
Same here, I'm considering this, but the price point doesn't make sense for now. You could get a used ThinkPad with better Dev env support.
johnatwork··on California approves $768M for electric vehicles
What about Ontario's Nuclear/Hydro?

But more to the point, you are right for the moment in that the source of electricity in California is 35~50% Natural Gas, but that source/dependance will most likely change. There's no reason why provisioning for this outcome is a bad idea. Especially since switching to EV has other benefits than simply not burning Fossil Fuels.

johnatwork··on Using old laptop batteries to build homemade powerwalls
I think the main issues it that it's always "on" and sourced with an unknown usage history. And it seems like it's placed in a location where if things were to go wrong, without proper mitigation, it could cause serious harm.

The chance of injury is probably higher with Chainsaws and cars as you say, but they are not in constant use, and usually have safeguards in place by a regulatory board.

johnatwork··on Into the Breach’s interface was a nightmare to make and the key to its greatness
I really like that the game is digestible in one night or two.

It really shines on replayability with new types of units that dramatically change the way you strategize.
