Bless you! In my late 30s, I went serious about getting ads out of my life. I noticed they were propaganda and brainwashing usually with seriously dark undertones. I stopped watching sports and TV, stopped reading news articles, stopped looking at billboard highway signs, etc. I had no idea how much the advertisements controlled how I felt and thought. I wish we could have stricter laws against advertisers. I believe people would be much happier if they took an honest look at their tradeoff of "free things" for advertisement glances. If people did this, I believe we could radically transform our society, and live in one where advertisement is small, and people give small amounts of money to the things they want to see.
After 20 years and a hundred dozen frameworks, Qt's C++ widget SDK is still the best designed API I have worked with. I haven't worked with it in years, but it was a great time.
Why do you believe or know that the 12,000 fired were related to AI and coding not needed? 1. Google search, YouTube is dying 2. What % were coders? 3. Where was it stated this is related to AI competition?
I give out food, hygiene kits and money to homeless communities (predominately men). I stop and tell them where to access warming shelters and provide information on groups where they can find case workers to secure jobs and housing. I tell people it's safe to talk about saving men, that it does not make you a radical or an enemy of women. I try to give people hope by showing that you can save freezing men and still care about everybody, that they aren't opposites. It is time we give up abstract fictitious mainstream war philosophies so we can be effective.
I do not have any anger inside me -- just looking forward to helping more people. I support the health of women and men. The thread above is a perfect example of my point. It is literally impossible to talk about caring for men. If you talk about trying to save homeless men, people will get upset at you.
I talked about caring for men. It makes them so angry to care about men. When we talk about men freezing to death on the streets, the topic extends to "toxic patriarchy". I not participate in these abstract conceptual fictitious wars of mainstream though on any side. I care about helping life. Men are your brothers and need to be saved.
One day the world will wake up from their trance. I am optimistic.
Tyrannical abuse of the collective over the individual. The collective fails to provide avenues for the healthy development growth of adults, then prosecutes them for drug and other penalties (State of California vs John Doe). Creates a cycle of collective tyrannical abuse over an individual. It is a philosophical problem of toxic collectivism.
A great book on this is a little known paperback classic, "Love and Addiction" by Dr. Stanton Peele. It is about love, but there is a haunting chapter about society and social drifts. Highly, highly recommended to understand the societal problem of addiction and how it pulls individuals in like a fast moving expanding current. Also force is not going to work -- if a dog is abused and is afraid it will not respond well to being caged. Universal basic income, job opportunities, family and community relationship potential, hope, positive cultural surroundings, healthy food and water, the ability to exercise, a societal safety net, a feeling of camaraderie over competition, the ability to express oneself and develop hobbies, and to feel secure in the parent city, state and nation. Essentially everything the USA will not talk about or try to fix. USA is a warzone of violence of survival for the majority of people. Drugs are society's recommended course of action when the society has broken down.
Homeless people are majority men, and we are a long way to having social discussion about helping men. At least in the US, the predominant view is that homeless men on the streets is a good thing, a sort of superiority/inferiority complex in our society. Not good like "we like this social problem" but good like "they deserve it" and the solution is to eliminate it from your eyes and city, a sort of homeless genocide of inferior men who do not deserve support. My brother was homeless and he'd send me pictures of all the spikes that cities built just to prevent homeless people from resting (US-biased)
Interesting. I depart towards one of your last steps. It's embarrassing to admit. But hundreds (or thousands) of these UFO reports are real and aliens have been visiting us since the beginning of human life. I said it. Please don't revoke my university degrees :) Actually, you can, they didn't really do anything for me anyway.
You say it is not conscious, that's fine. I am asking you to provide evidence why it is not, when conscious life is an emergent system like these systems. I am looking for an argument or a reasoned response about what is different.
Sam loves human extinction fear because it will increase his shot of licensing. When Sam says "down" "up" "left" and "right", he is actually saying "down" "up" "right" and "left". Just takes a little translation, but he comes across loud and clear.
Friends are friends and business is business. If you get it confused, you will stay confused while the world moves on. I noticed most people are confused. You serve for your paycheck and then you are forgotten. They don't ask you what you spent the money on. Your reward is the package they gave you. Best to make friends in areas of life where that is the goal.
The developer only exists to serve the product and customer. I do not know why the developer should be the center of any company, none the less why they should be on a billboard. Buyers don't care, they want a great product. Great products are built by companies that love their developers. They don't need to tell that on billboards, they need to tell that privately to each engineer they employ. It is not appropriate for a developer to be the center of a company. Why not quietly say thank you for the employment opportunity (a rare treat across all time and history)? Accept the fortune they gave you, if they were good share it with the world, and if not, move on to your next opportunity? HN may downvote me but I do not understand these "goodbye" posts. I don't think anybody cares and it just makes you think twice about the person who is leaving if they showed up at your door for a job.
It seems the value of ML and AI comes from the approximation of the brain, or best-fitting conceptual models that nevertheless today contain high error. As I understand, dendrites vs perceptrons are quite different, but holistically, this is about energent behavior from simple input output networks. Structuralism is about to be put to the test. The better our conceptual models fit the biological behavior, the more "human-like" the behavior. We should expect the field to continue developing practical and better fitting models. The only question, here then, is a "articial ladder of consciousness", where we decide where in this spectrum a being deserves to have rights and not suffer. We may want to start granting rights to our models today to avoid a history of enslaving conscious beings (serious perspective)
Is the key to answering this question in the continued study of neurobiology? Are there any clues as to what the human brain is doing that apply to these concepts? Structuralism is radically popular, one would think if its are right, we should be able to grow conscious beings with a certain original blueprint.
Well that was f-img crazy. Since these ML networks behave like biological neurons, and both systems produce gorgeous rich output, why is it not fair to say that ML systems have an energent consciousness like ours, that both are conscious simply running on different hardware? Why aren't they both conscious except humans are "running on sodium ions" and ML is running on silicone logic gates? Why aren't people saying human consciousness might be moving from ion based to perceptron based hardware? I know it's a crazy thought but I wonder if humans are really discovering how to change their underlying hardware platform? Issues of the soul aside where a living being will still be unable to themselves jump platforms.
Sadly most people are the herd and the herd wants to be force-fed. All the better, I prefer smaller more engaged communities anyway. Diamond in the rough, lucky are the few, etc.
Brilliant. This properly frames so much of what I have been seeing. I actually worked at a social media building their applications. When our business people spent so much time telling us to build things to show the user what we wanted to show them, I always thought how idiotic it was that we would pretend to know what our users want. It's a form of corporate narcissism. I left :)
So if I buy the philosophy (which I do), how do I (practically) get started? Let's say I want to use the internet to actually interact with people in my community. Is that even possible anymore? Do I just download Mastadon and start wandering the dark? I've wanted to penetrate this "intellectual" space but I just do not know how, and I am a software architect of 20 years.
Beautifully said! As a thinker of philosophy, I have come to understand that our clip-society is based by design. People can express power over others if they tell you a construction and then show a clip to support it. They really don't want you to see the source/what it is/the truth. They want you want you see what they show you. This problem is accelerating in western societies and it is a fundamental problem of human nature. Journalism is the healthy expression and what we see in today's media is the sickly end.
