joeriel··on I Can Be the Bank: Individual Investors Buy Busted Mortgages
That is absolutely not true. Being underwater is having a Loan to Value ratio > 100%.
joeriel··on A US millionaire who buried treasure in the Rockies has offered one main clue
Article says he buried the treasure in 2010, not decades ago.

This feels a lot like Halliday's Easter Egg.

joeriel··on FDA clears first contact lens with light-adaptive technology
When you are outside in bright sunlight, your pupils will constrict, so that only a small part of the lens actually needs to darken.

Is there a reason the entire lens has to darken? If they only deposited the dye in a smaller center portion, it would be unnoticeable against a black pupil.

At least not to humans. Many animals have taste buds tuned for water.

joeriel··on Ask HN: How do you get into a niche field like SAP development?
To nitpick even further, Accenture was not a part of Arthur Andersen. It was known as Andersen Consulting, and when they split from Arthur Andersen, they adopted Accenture as a name.

joeriel··on Google will begin testing password-free login to Android apps
> If the institution needs more confidence, it can feed back and ask for additional mechanisms: more biometric data, for instance, or an old-style password.

I get the feeling that early adopters of this would end up erring on the side of more confidence and still ask for "old-style" passwords. So basically, 2fa on a more widespread/intrusive scale.

joeriel··on Announcing SQL Server on Linux
You may want to look at the OPENQUERY syntax, which may help to resolve performance problems related to remote joins.

Edit: Useful if both tables in join are on remote (linked) server

What do they even mean by "techie" then?

I'm assuming she's not on the hardware side.

"Techie" is such a vague term.

joeriel··on A VR Cycling Experience for $40
The title of the blog post is "A VR CYCLING EXPERIENCE FOR $40" and if you read the article, it really didn't take that much of an effort.
joeriel··on Oculus Rift Pre-Orders to Open on January 6
There is some debate about whether porn will really drive VR technology.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/does-porn-still-ha...

I also recall reading a different article (can't find it now and don't want to do too much Google searching at work for it) about how almost all the most trafficked porn sites are owned by a single entity now. From what I remember of the article, it posited that their technology has fallen behind and they have little incentive to keep pushing tech forward given the razor thin margins they have on operating the sites.

joeriel··on A sliding puzzle, built with Elm

joeriel··on Samsung unveils 2.5-inch 16TB SSD
Where in the article did it say that? The only mention of price is:

"We don't have a price for Samsung's 16TB PM1633a, but we can't imagine that it'll be cheaper than £5,000."

Based on that, you could reasonably say it will cost $7800 or more per current GBP->USD exchange rate.

joeriel··on Soylent 2.0
I work about 9 hours a day and spend my remaining time with my family, volunteering, going to the gym, learning guitar, etc.

There are many times where I just don't have time, desire or energy to cook a healthy meal. A healthy meal replacement is a lot better than ordering pizza.

Don't assume that a busy lifestyle means 'overwork' - I just have different priorities.

joeriel··on Are You Concerned Your 4 Year Old Isn’t in a Cool Band?
What are you observing? If you are talking about rock instruments, you are probably correct.

My son is highly involved in his high school band (concert and marching), and the gender breakdown is very instrument specific. A lot more girls play flute and clarinet while a lot more boys play sousaphone, trombone, and percussion.

Part of it is physical - not that many girls can march around with a heavy sousaphone. But I do think there is a bias that pushes girls and boys at a young age when starting out towards certain instruments.

joeriel··on Open-Source Loan-Level Analysis of Fannie and Freddie
I work in the mortgage industry and have analyzed large datasets of subprime and alt-a mortgages. These findings are very consistent with mine, although the default and severity rates are (obviously) even worse than conventional.

Freddie is a bit behind in their dataset, only offering data through 2013. IMO, this kind of defeats their effort to increase transparency. If 2014 vintage loans are performing much worse (or better), it won't be known in time for many investors/modelers to react.

I also wish GinnieMae would release loan level data like this for FHA/VA/USDA loans, which are a huge part of the market. I could only find MBS pool aggregated data on their web-site: http://www.ginniemae.gov/doing_business_with_ginniemae/inves...

joeriel··on Meteor Raises $20M
SQL support is the biggest ask on their Trello board.

https://trello.com/b/hjBDflxp/meteor-roadmap

There are some good packages on Atmosphere for PostgreSQL, but I think that it needs to be officially supported/integrated for many people to be comfortable with it.

joeriel··on Ruby: The Last Eight Years

IIRC, the finger print scan was only for entry into the park, not for Fastpass lines.

I was just there at the end of December, but it is all kind of hazy now.

joeriel··on Stuff I've Messed Up While Interviewing
I will ask the same questions to different interviewers. Often, I will get different answers/perspectives on things.

I'll sometimes even say, "I've asked some of these questions to [person x, person y, ...], but I'd like your perspective."

joeriel··on NHL partners with GoPro to deliver fans unique perspectives of the game
It could make for interesting cutaway shots or PIP, but as you said, it would only be useful from time to time.

Previous footage I have watched of football players (American) is very disorienting, and the field of vision is very narrow with a helmet mounted camera. It looks like the player has tunnel vision. However, a player's eyes will dart back and forth very quickly taking in a much bigger picture, so you aren't really seeing what they are truly seeing.

The Madden video games implemented a first person perspective (I haven't played for a long time, so not sure if they still have it), and it was nearly impossible for me to play in that mode. You don't have any peripheral vision using that mode, and that same problem will exist for these live sport shots.
