jmelloy··on Zoomable Circles, a Svelte component for hierarchical data
Man their tutorials are so good and make me want to use this.
jmelloy··on Building an e-ink picture frame that displays an iCloud photo album
I've got an app that uses that to upload to S3. It's pretty straightforward.
jmelloy··on Ask HN: Anyone using Swift on the server-side?
We use Vapor3 and the language is ok, but the deployment story (docker/k8s, for us) is a nightmare and has caused us unending drama. Things seem a little better with newer versions of vapor and swift 5.5, but our experiments don’t seem to have gotten very far, and the upgrade story is quite a lot of work.
jmelloy··on The most copied StackOverflow snippet of all time is flawed (2019)
I was reading this and thought it sounded familiar. A few months ago I needed a human readable bytes format, ended up on that stack overflow article and, plot twist, copied the while loop one.
jmelloy··on Why is it so hard to see code from 5 minutes ago?
I agree. I also think commit messages get more detailed the further along the process is, and the less code you change.

“Added unit tests and stub out api” (50 files) vs “fix bug when files are added too quickly” (1 file, 3 lines)

jmelloy··on Electric vehicles close to ‘tipping point’ of mass adoption
I've seen plenty of chargers at malls and Walgreens and other areas. Usually it's a ChargePoint or blink app, which connects through your phone. One of the local malls subsidizes the electricity and charging is free.
jmelloy··on Dutch brewery burns iron as a clean, recyclable fuel
And also because externalities aren't priced in, like carbon amounts.
jmelloy··on Sustainable engineers Kenoteq are reinventing the brick
There isn’t much eco-friendly about cement.
jmelloy··on Stockton extends its monthly $500 UBI payment experiment
How many dirt bikes do you think someone is buying? Is your concern that after being on UBI for a year someone will have 12 dirt bikes and a starving child?

If 99 people don’t buy drugs, and 1 person does, is the system a failure?

jmelloy··on Solar’s Future is Insanely Cheap
The IEA forecast has been so wrong it suggests malice.
jmelloy··on Tesla Surges Above $500, Leaving Analyst Targets in the Dust
It looks so weird and cool when it's wet that I wonder if they did it on purpose. It delights strangers who see it the first time.
jmelloy··on Apple releases iOS 13 macOS Catalina public betas
September/October
jmelloy··on Apple's Audacity
And I believe it's only required if you offer. "sign in with facebook" or "sign in with google" link. If everything's self-contained (ie Netflix), no issues.
jmelloy··on Hyundai Motor Introduces Electric Double-Decker Bus
You’re conflating units, I think. The long range Model 3 has a 75 kWHr battery pack, and goes about 300 miles. That equates to about 250 wh/mi. This bus has a 374 kWHr battery pack, and goes 300 kilometers. That’s 180 miles, so about 2100 whr/mi. The “energy” tab of the Model 3 is displaying watt-hours.
jmelloy··on K-Means Clustering: Unsupervised Learning Applied on Magic:The Gathering
Unless I'm blind, I don't actually see the notebook checked into the GitHub repo.
jmelloy··on Tesla increases Supercharging prices to the point that gas might be cheaper
It can. You can plug a Tesla into any 110 outlet. (It's just 4x slower than a 30A/220).
jmelloy··on Something Is Broken in Our Science Fiction. Why Can’t We Move Past Cyberpunk?
I'd check out The Expanse. The core is a world rooted in relatively real-world engineering, and the fantastical builds pretty slowly (and is generally terrifying).
jmelloy··on Uber Revenue Slows as Quarterly Loss Surges to $1.1B
Shared Lyft is amazing. Half the price at least.
jmelloy··on Uber Revenue Slows as Quarterly Loss Surges to $1.1B
I've ordered pizza to my apartment 100 times and never had an issues, but Uber Eats drivers consistently can't find it. It's a nice service, but literally anything would be better.
jmelloy··on Show HN: You Don't Need WordPress – Create a Blog With Only Google Docs
WordPress isn't really targeted at single-user blogs for technical people... it's targeted at an environment where you can have multiple people writing blog posts and doing design without being programmers or mucking with the server. And it fits that need very well.
jmelloy··on Introducing Ghost 2.0
Oracle had this limitation, too, or at least it did a few years ago.
jmelloy··on How much does Apple know about me? The answer surprised me
That’s pretty rough from a financial audit perspective.

For budgeting purposes I’ve tried to find a full list of my iTunes purchase, and couldn’t find it in the store. Didn’t think to look in privacy.

jmelloy··on Introducing .app, a more secure home for apps on the web
How would it? Godaddy can't buy the domain until General Availability, so they can't guarantee that you'll get it. Someone else could buy it first.
jmelloy··on Show HN: Domain Wheel – Domain and company name generator
Should probably let the user decide, and you get an extra word thats not just .com.
jmelloy··on How much money do people need to be happy?
There is also a huge difference between $150k with no/manageable debt, and $150k with a lot of debt. Some people can't figure out how to budget even with a high income. "I deserve this, I make good money/work hard/whatever" is a dangerous statement.
jmelloy··on Pivot – Rows to Columns
A lot depends on what he changed, of course, but in general pivoting like this reduces the overall amount of data that’s both transmitted down the wire and processed through the CPU. For instance, a lot more work can be done on a single pass through the table than before, it takes less memory to keep the calculation, and the end result is smaller - sometimes by an order of magnitude.

Those things all stack up.

jmelloy··on .IO domain name reliability issues and how we’re working around them
The ICANN contract, which new TLDs have to sign and country codes do not, has very strict penalties for having DNS go down for any reason. They're just as reliable as com.

Disclaimer: I work for Donuts, owner of many new TLDs.

jmelloy··on Redshift vs. BigQuery vs. Snowflake benchmark
I agree. The performance you get for the cost and effort is amazing.
jmelloy··on Taking control of all .io domains with a targeted registration
ccTLDs (Country Codes) are always two letters. gTLDs aren't.

The gTLDs have a pretty strict ICANN contract they have to follow; ccTLDs are looser.

jmelloy··on MIT’s gas-powered drone is able to stay in the air for five days at a time
So when asked to build a solar-powered airplane, they ... built a gas-powered one?
