jmdocherty··on Ask HN: How To Prevent Abuse of Image Hosting in a Personal Project
I’d offload the headache to someone like https://imagekit.io/ (no affiliation but happy to have used them on a couple of projects).
jmdocherty··on Ask HN: What do you think about “The Social Dilemma”?
I'm a fanboi! I found this film incredibly powerful (esp. the comments during the closing credits). I've become a real bore when chatting with friends and other parents about this subject. Now I can simply say "watch The Social Dilemma" and return to discussing the weather!

I found the tips on https://www.humanetech.com/take-control very helpful to interrupt my addition to my phone (particularly the monotone one).

jmdocherty··on Ask HN: Have You Donated to Wikipedia?
I donate every year when they remind me. I also send my BAT from Brave to them as I’m hoping they can use that. I’ve spent a few hours (probably a couple of days total) editing content.
jmdocherty··on EasyJet admits a cyber-attack has affected approximately nine million customers
Contrast the BBC headline with Reuters’ ”Cyber attack on EasyJet gets details of 9 million customers”. I love the BBC content but the news output seems to be far too focused on number of eyeballs than “facts”/accuracy. I find it infuriating.
jmdocherty··on Show HN: Tired of mobile games with IAP and ads, I made No-Bullshit Games
Freakin’ love this. Thanks. Genuinely inspiring.
jmdocherty··on Ask HN: What do you use to test website performance?
I just found this: https://sonarwhal.com (seems to be unrelated to Sonarqube) ... I thought it might help anyone stumbling on this Q in future.
jmdocherty··on Ask HN: Any tips on personal productivity?
Probably not what you're looking for but it works for me. If you're physically able, take up running. It doesn't have to be far or fast just getting outside is enough. Listen to an inspiring podcast or audiobook while you do it ("how I built this" is my favourite). As extra motivation to get out, I don't allow myself to listen to that when I'm not running. Running is really time efficient. HIIT is also good for 20-30mins of exercise but it doesn't work for me because I can't listen to a podcast and hear the instructions.

When I'm back at my desk I'm far more productive & energised. I make it a daily habit and leave all the kit in the same place so it's easy to do it on those "off" days.

jmdocherty··on Ask HN: What do you use to test website performance?
Thanks for all those tips and the insight. I use Lighthouse and Browserstack but hadn't heard of flowtype or Sonarqube...will check them out.
jmdocherty··on Ask HN: Does your Amazon Echo talk to you without being asked?
Yes, this happens to me on an Echo Dot. The responses I've noticed don't seem to be replaying previous queries but rather completely unrelated queries to the people in our house or our location. It's like a classic "crossed wires" from the old telephone operator. I guess it happens once/twice a month.
jmdocherty··on High Sierra vulnerability exposes the password of an encrypted APFS container
Glass half-full: "Oops! They missed this because they were busy making all the other stuff super-secure."

Glass half-empty: "Oh-my-goodness...what would Steve say? FFS. We can't trust anyone any more!"

I'm inclined to be half-full.

jmdocherty··on Is StubHub's Website Deceiving Users?
...or like the employee just shouting rather loudly across the showroom floor to a colleague:

"Hey Joe we just sold another one of the <insert TV you happen to be looking at>. That's the 3rd one today - we better order some more before we run out of stock"

jmdocherty··on Smarter speed bump using non-Newtonian liquid
This a really interesting idea. The problem of stabbing/puncturing can be solved by moving the liquid lower in the ground and having a floating more robust layer above. I imagine it would be particularly useful in places like outside hospitals where ambulances would prefer a smooth ride if possible. However, I'm sure we used to make a liquid with similar properties when we were children out of cornflower (?) and water.
jmdocherty··on Ask HN: My Instagram account stolen – any ideas how?
I have MFA set for the same Twitter handle but couldn't see it on Instagram. I thought that by reporting all the erroneous "password request" emails they might have flagged something (not sure why they have that link in the email if it doesn't do anything). Obviously I'm seriously small-fry so wouldn't expect any kind of special treatment but not having MFA does seem to be a bit lacking.
jmdocherty··on Ask HN: My Instagram account stolen – any ideas how?
Yeah, I hope it was social engineering (seems a better option than hacking Lastpass :-) ) but not sure how they could have done it given the information that was on the account/unique to the account. Will be interesting to see if Instagram return the account to me.
