jiqiren··on The GOP Tax Plan Will Destroy Graduate Education
Destroy is certainly too strong of a word to use.

This tax plan would likely mean more student loan debt. That's also bad - but it isn't going to destroy graduate education.

jiqiren··on A Pre-History of Slashdot
I now regret not making an account earlier (I'm 126xxx). I was totally fine being an Anonymous Coward.

It was only when I realized that having an account still allowed me to post as an AC that I finally made one.

I wish AC was still a thing for popular websites like reddit, HN, etc. Just start off the comment at -1 or something...

jiqiren··on Uber Investors Clash with Board Over Voting Power
Greed is the root of these investors problems. They offered up anything to get a piece of each round - in this case voting power and board seats.

Uber investors are not alone - Facebook and Google investors also have little control.

jiqiren··on How to contribute to GNU Hurd (2006)
Every time I checkout GNU Hurd I'm flabbergasted that it is still 32bit. It is something that is really hard to get past and honestly I don't have the skills to contribute to make it 64bit. But I just don't have time for something that is limited to 4GB address space[1]. Too far away from modern to be honest.

(IMHO)

jiqiren··on Android Oreo
I'm looking forward to Google finally allowing PiP to work in the YouTube app on iOS...
jiqiren··on Google tries to patent ANS, which they did not invent
This must be part of that "Don't be evil" mantra I keep hearing about.
jiqiren··on Apple Watch sales up over 50% since last year
Forget my Apple Watch at home = miss most meetings at work.

My new dependency.

jiqiren··on SFO near miss might have triggered aviation disaster
SFO's ILS isn't always functioning. It was turned off for months when Asiana crashed (June 1st - Aug 2nd)[1].

jiqiren··on Snap falls to IPO price
I don't think you read closely enough. On the low-end, banks were thinking $108 for the base price per share. As it was, the IPO ended up at $85/share because of it being a dutch-auction where most investors played it safe and did low bids. As soon as the IPO executed (at $85) it popped anyway to $100. So Google potentially lost out on $23/share (minus 7-8% cut from banks).

jiqiren··on JMAP – an IMAP replacement
Seems like this is missing an RFC to make any real traction.
jiqiren··on Flawed reporting about WhatsApp
they are correct for two of the above - given a warrant from a court - FB Messenger and Hangouts messages are readable by Facebook and Google.
jiqiren··on Chris Lattner: “Turns out that Tesla isn't a good fit for me”
To add on to this, how can they reconcile their /autopilot link with their car configurator? the /autopilot link implies all cars have the hardware to do full autopilot - but the fine print seems to be "if you add on $10k of options".

https://www.tesla.com/modelx/design

"Enhanced Autopilot" as a $6,000 option. "Full Self-Driving Capability" is another $4,000 option.

/autopilot page seems very disingenuous.

jiqiren··on What I learned from my startup’s failure
> Imagine trying to start a restaurant without a chef

No sorry, bad example. Having an understanding of logistics, supply chains, and having consultant contacts for things like building a menu and interior design. It is the foundation of how franchises work - they've (even) done that leg work for investors. Often times they already have studies for potential locations. Investors just add money and management of people.

jiqiren··on Mosh v1.3 Released
This link is full of counter arguments the author even concedes. If this is so serious why doesn't openssh team remove the feature?

There is no excuse for denying mosh users existing patches/features and the above link changes nothing.

jiqiren··on Mosh v1.3 Released
SSH Agent forwarding issue >5years old now. :( https://github.com/mobile-shell/mosh/issues/120
jiqiren··on Spam detection in the physical world
would not be welcome in Hawaii
jiqiren··on Troubled covert agency responsible for trucking nuclear bombs across America
In Safari just use "Reader View". Works on iOS (iPhone+iPad) and macOS.
jiqiren··on Goodbye Mac App Store
The dev clearly stated he didn't want to do the work to support doing things 'the right way'. He didn't want to do the extra work to keep the same functionality and work within a sandbox.

It is ridiculous we are having this conversation about strictness of a sandbox requirements in the App Store and in another thread people bitch about Dropbox acting like an out of control virus.

As a user: I want it all sandboxed.

jiqiren··on [dead]
this reminds me of high school when "the matrix" was all the rage. The pseudo philosophical nonsense even bled into university.
jiqiren··on Oracle refuses to accept pro-Google “fair use” verdict in API battle
Apple.
jiqiren··on FTC sues D-Link over router and camera security flaws
How about all these smartphones being sold with unsupported broken versions of Android?
jiqiren··on SeaweedFS – A simple and highly scalable distributed file system
GlusterFS does not require any kernel modules. It runs in user space and only when mounting with FUSE or NFS is the kernel in play.
jiqiren··on ThinkPad X1 Carbon
Nonsense. If you dispose your ewaste properly (which is in general the law) a builtin battery will get recycled or disposed of just the same as one that is replaceable.
jiqiren··on Regional Security Office Ghana Shuts Down Fake US Embassy
The blockbuster hollywood movie watching kid and sad drone stat reading adult in me is wondering why all these people were not just killed years ago. Seems pretty serious to just be able to produce visas and fake/doctored passports.
jiqiren··on Inventor of General Tso's Chicken dies in Taipei at age 98
I've never had - nor seen - General Tso Chicken with broccoli in it. The pic in the article doesn't show broccoli either.
jiqiren··on How We Knew It Was Time to Leave the Cloud
But some workloads get all the priority while others get zero/idle priority. Not true in public cloud.
jiqiren··on BART janitor grossed $270K in pay and benefits last year
It is not the last few years. It is whatever the highest average range was over a period of 12-36 months.

Think I'll stick with the pinyin input method.

I spent about 20min trying to figure out how to write 白 and still cannot.

jiqiren··on How Spy Tech Firms Let Governments See Everything on a Smartphone
The article included the response of direct questions to said company about these violations. They refused to say it was wrong or violated their internal ethics policy.

Additionally, they just repeated no laws were broken.

There is no playing devils advocate here. They clearly don't care about what happened in Mexico or middle-east.

jiqiren··on How Spy Tech Firms Let Governments See Everything on a Smartphone
Sickening. This company doesn't seem to have even a basic moral compass. Even when their tools are being used against human rights workers or journalist they have no qualms.
