jiqiren··on iPhone Duo
there is not demand. sales prove this. there is no amount of antidotal evidence you can offer: small phones don't sell.
jiqiren··on Codefloe Is a Professionally Hosted Public Git Forge
Free CI is what really is going to keep many on GitHub (Actions). Codeberg has Woodpecker CI requires a FOSS application to get approval to use limited free tier. CircleCI has a free tier also but doesn't look like official documentation for integrating with Forgejo.

Being able to produce x86_64/arm64 builds for macOS, Linux, and Windows for free is a minimum start to get movement to another provider IMHO. GitHub already does this.

jiqiren··on We Rebuilt the Linux MicroVM Stack on Apple Silicon
"You can even get /dev/kvm inside a Linux VM on an M3 or later running macOS 15, which runs Firecracker unmodified."

I'm very confused why any SWE is on a M1 or M2 Mac. I've always gotten a new machine at $CORP every 2 years...

jiqiren··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
He's saying that shipping from the big western parts suppliers (Digikey, Mouser, Segger) costs a lot of money. When ordering from AliExpress or Crowd Supply he just gets the cheap postal rates which from China are free. It is very likely a good chunk of the overhead from western part suppliers has to do with export controls and risk aversion.

Aliexpress doesn't do any ID verification hassle. This is all an argument more about distribution and shipping. RISK-V is going to win because getting the parts is insanely cheap and without overhead.

The "fix" is probably Digikey, Mouser, and Segger need to just let buyers check a box where they assume all liability and parts are just thrown in the mail and forgot about - something aliexpress is great at doing.

jiqiren··on Taylor Farms Called White House to Try to Delay Cyclospora Recall
Seems because of Supreme Court ruling practically every federal agency likely needs to be re-chartered to have the same structure as the Federal Reserve.
jiqiren··on Nativ: Run frontier open models locally on your Mac
there is plenty of grunt work these smaller models can do. update dependencies, fix merge conflicts, write --help, markdown, or readme files for existing code. etc.

sometimes they fail but undo is just a "git restore" or if automated, rejecting a PR and having a better model take a crack at it.

jiqiren··on Apple Silicon Exec Explains Mac Mini AI Demand and On-Device Future
When I was at Apple we never wanted or. We wanted all. If that push to use Chinese memory works out it will be great for us and Apple.
jiqiren··on GNU Parallel 20260622 ('Rape Gang Inquiry') Released
What kind of crazy names are they coming up with over in GNU land?
jiqiren··on The best response to AI slop and online noise is from Robin Williams
Robin Williams’ character literally says in his tangent that he will never know what it is like to be an orphan. He certainly cannot tell the 'kid' how he should feel because he read Oliver Twist. He's aware that the same applies to him.
jiqiren··on GLM-5.2 – How to Run Locally
I hope all this speculation comes true. Right now this ram crunch is ridiculous.
jiqiren··on Princeton mandates proctoring for in-person exams, upending 133 year precedent
I wasn't at Princeton, but I remember blatant cheating going on and 'study groups' in CS classes that were mere passing around of completed code. (1997-2001)

I'd asked them what they expected would happen when they tried to get jobs or landed one. Like how do you fake work? They just said all jobs are group-based like their study group. (Keep in mind they were soliciting my code as their group was struggling to find solutions to assignments.)

The answer is a one of them works at a grocery store as a cashier, another one I saw now manages a bagel store (didn't know all of them). A waste of time, money, and effort to get a CS degree then just not be able to use it.

jiqiren··on Dark web agent spotted bedroom wall clue to rescue girl from abuse
How many of these sex offenders bought this couch and live close to this brick factory in homes built in that time period?
jiqiren··on MenuetOS – a GUI OS that boots from a single floppy disk
Where is the source? I only see driver and application source.
jiqiren··on LM Studio 0.4
This release introduces parallel requests with continuous batching for high throughput serving, all-new non-GUI deployment option, new stateful REST API, and a refreshed user interface.
jiqiren··on Texas first state to end American bar association oversight of law schools
I think every profession needs to evaluate what is necessary for a license to practice. I would agree to more reforms with the MD licensing requirements.

I also think we should be licensing law-enforcement and requiring them to have their own liability insurance.

jiqiren··on Texas first state to end American bar association oversight of law schools
IMHO, what determines if you're a lawyer or not should be completely test-based and not have anything to do with where you learned. There is a lot of gatekeeping going on with ABA to keep people from even taking the test.
jiqiren··on Los Angeles ends strange rite of passage with new fridge law
Same. But the fine print was the fridge was left by previous tenant and I was on my own if it broke. Had the option to decline the fridge.
jiqiren··on Garage – An S3 object store so reliable you can run it outside datacenters
Unrelated, but one of the more annoying aspects of whatever software they use now is lack of IPv6 for the CDN layer of DigitalOcean Spaces. It means I need to proxy requests myself. :(
jiqiren··on Zig quits GitHub, says Microsoft's AI obsession has ruined the service
The evidence of AI failure is all this low hanging fruit maintenance fixes users are begging Microsoft to fix and these AI agents are not fixing them. AI was going to 10x engineers or something right? Why isn’t GitHub getting better with all this AI help?
jiqiren··on John Giannandrea to retire from Apple
I know there is an infinite list of reasons Siri sucks but one that really irks me is now Siri can be integrated with ChatGPT. You can also change settings so it will automatically query ChatGPT without asking…

Yet Siri will still tell you about a web results on your phone… but sometimes same question asked? Will check ChatGPT and give you an actual answer (15% hit rate?).

ARG!!!!

jiqiren··on The only GM EV1 ever publicly sold
Musk likely wouldn’t have gone the way he did if he had just been invited to that White House EV summit.
jiqiren··on You did this with an AI and you do not understand what you're doing here
that's still a huge waste of time and resources. Rather, Daniel has focused on promoting good use of AI that has yielded good results for curl: https://mastodon.social/@bagder/115241241075258997 https://joshua.hu/llm-engineer-review-sast-security-ai-tools...
jiqiren··on Privacy and Security Risks in the eSIM Ecosystem [pdf]
Install phone company app, login, and click migrate eSIM to this phone. Whole process can take up to 5min depending on how fast wifi is to connect to your phone company.
jiqiren··on Samsung taking market share from Apple in U.S. as foldable phones gain momentum
I had two friends that said the same thing and now both have iPhones. They got sick of constantly sending in their phones to be replaced for screen failures. One had a pixel other had a Samsung.

The one with a pixel final break was when he landed in Belize to start a vacation and the screen died. Entire vacation he had to borrow wife’s iPad mini to read.

jiqiren··on My iPhone 8 Refuses to Die: Now It's a Solar-Powered Vision OCR Server
HomePods perform real-time vision processing on multiple camera streams for HomeKit. However, the primary quality challenge lies in the video quality of HomeKit-enabled doorbell cameras that can consistently stream to Wi-Fi. For instance, my doorbell operates on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, resulting in highly compressed video streams. This compression likely impacts the results.
