jiqiren··on Chrome deploys deep-linking in latest build despite privacy concerns
I just give a unique key to each user. That user does a lookup of key-<scroll-position>.tracking.example.com when they get to that part of the page. As they scroll I gather data via dns.

Source: was my job to track people and what they do.

jiqiren··on Tesla remotely removed autopilot features from used Tesla without notice
> The feature was disabled while the used car dealer still had the car, before it was sold to the now current owner.

This is not what happened according to the article. A person bought the car with those features still existing on the car then ran an update. The update removed the features.

You can’t get promoted at Google by maintaining an existing product. Only building a new one. (I’ve heard that over and over from friends that work/worked at google).

Yes, this is antidotal...

jiqiren··on Twitter account deletions on 'pause' after outcry
Burden is on you to simply login. That’s all twitter is asking - login to show you still want the username.
jiqiren··on The Pixel 4’s face unlock works on sleeping people
google doesn't need to care because their users don't care. take a look at all the google apologist in this comment thread for a quick example.
jiqiren··on Letter regarding preliminary fact-finding about MIT and Jeffrey Epstein
So are they going to send the money back?

Will they send the money 'back' to some charity or group that works to help victims?

Or just more cheap sorries but-thanks-for-the-expensive-equipment?

quick edit: MIT's endowment is worth over $16billion, they can afford to say no. https://news.mit.edu/2018/mit-endowment-financials-0914

As many report have already mentioned: the MCAS is not in the manuals.
jiqiren··on Systemd as tragedy
My impression of systemd: shoddy version of launchd.
jiqiren··on Best Buy’s Secrets for Thriving in the Amazon Age (2017)
I bought a 5-year warranty @ Best Buy for a laptop back in ~2002. Got the cheapest eMachine sold for writing papers at university.

I had it replaced and/or fixed at least 4 times. Was worth it for me.

jiqiren··on Why I use old hardware
Editor will be snappier, Docker will start faster, git merges will be quick, etc

it all adds up.

jiqiren··on We DMCA-ed our own game because it got hijacked by publisher
I’m super confused on what a publisher does in this case. seems all they did was release on steam? Can’t any dev do the same? What was the purpose of the publisher? (Did I miss something?)
jiqiren··on Google paid Andy Rubin $90M while keeping silent about a misconduct claim
The reality is this (specific example from NYTimes) was always part of google. There never was a point where they were the good guys. Google has always been a bunch of amoral brilliant engineers.
jiqiren··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results

of all places you think Google does this kind of cost-analysis in a spreadsheet?

jiqiren··on Why A.I. Researchers at Google Got Desks Next to the Boss
Brings back memories of Plus team all being close to leadership at Google... this is more of an ego thing for leadership and the lucky few deemed to be the most important.

If the "most important" were really seated next to leadership at Google it should be Adwords team.

jiqiren··on Vim Anywhere
why not "mktemp -t EditTextinEmacs". This will touch a file in $TMPDIR which is more safe than /tmp.
jiqiren··on Twitter Killing Its Mac App

jiqiren··on ZFS for Linux
"Definite legal ambiguity remains with ZFS"

This seems to be the biggest problem with ZFS. Even Apple ditched ZFS on macOS.

ZFS is slowing down and impacting the real alternative: btrfs. IMHO Red Hat should be ashamed for abandoning btrfs. ‍️
