jimueller··on VS Installer welcome image contains offensive element for Chinese
It's not offensive. This title is overblown.
jimueller··on Ocean Microphones May Have Recorded Lost Malaysian Jet's Crash
Yeah, that jumped out at me too. I don't know how you get that fact wrong.
jimueller··on It’s time to reappraise the humble Choose Your Own Adventure book
I think they have been revived by one of the original authors [1]. A friend who bought these for his son mentioned these a while back, but said the books are no longer violent. I only remember reading one CYOA, but I think I was burned to death on an electric fence or something. Anyway, something to look into if you care about that.

jimueller··on Please Google, let us revert to the classic Gmail look
I agree, that thread is a bit dramatic. With compact view, I'm failing to see a big difference.
jimueller··on The Problem with AMP
I actually like the AMP pages. Aside from public radio sites and a handful of other sites, news pages are so full of ads and slow loading, especially on mobile, that they're unreadable.

With AMP I can actually read articles from my local newspaper or TV station.

I guess in this case, I see it as a win for fast loading pages with just the article I'm looking for. Using AMP is my way of fighting back against autoplaying video ads and click bait links mixed in with news.

jimueller··on Six more radio signals from deep space deepen mystery
Is this site for real? Nothing but clickbait titles.
jimueller··on A Map of the World Won Japan’s Prestigious Design Award
A decorative toy map like this doesn't have to be accurate. Yes, you can ignore things for convenience. If I make a map that ignores the Pacific so I can focus on landmasses, it doesn't make the actual Pacific disappear. So yes, you can absolutely ignore things you don't want.
jimueller··on Microsoft Removes the Option to Opt Out of Windows 10 Free Upgrade?
No, what's new is that those bugs and missing features will get fixed without an OS service pack / release.
jimueller··on Better Java – Resources for Writing Modern Java
Going from C# to Java, one of the biggest things I miss is the Property syntax.
jimueller··on Google Earth Pro is now free
Depending on the use case, Falcon View is an alternative.

jimueller··on Get Visual Studio Community 2013 for Free
If you have a grudge against MS, that's fine. But this isn't really confusing at all.
jimueller··on The Racial Dot Map: One Dot per Person for the Entire U.S.
If you don't respond, a census taker stops by for a visit.
jimueller··on Microsoft Band
Your phone can't lock to GPS faster because it can use cell towers to narrow down your position first. The Band should lock more quickly now that it has a general idea of where you are. I have a Garmin GPS watch, and the initial lock does take a long time.
jimueller··on Microsoft Xim
Unlike many in the comments, I don't think this is a useless app. I don't particularly enjoy passing my phone around, and sometimes it's a nice way of showing everyone photos at the same time.

At first I thought this was Nokia Photobeamer v2 [1], but it appears to be a completely separate app.

jimueller··on Apple and IBM: This Time It’ll Be Different
Because the author, probably not the submitter, decided to do that in their article on their website. Also, as trivial as it may be to get revenue and employee numbers from annual reports, it only takes a few seconds to do in Wolfram Alpha.
jimueller··on CShell: A simple, yet powerful, C# scripting IDE
ScriptCS does have REPL. Maybe it didn't at the time of that article. http://scriptcs.net/
jimueller··on US Nuclear Missile Silos Still Use Floppy Disks
These systems are designed to do one thing and do it well, without error. They have been in place a long time. Because they are old does not mean they are not secure. Much like the Apollo mission computers are often quoted as being "less powerful than a calculator" does not mean that they do not work. Many military computers are not impressive from a hardware standpoint because they don't have to be.
jimueller··on A First Look at the Target Intrusion, Malware
In this context, is the POS device the cash register or the CC reader used by the customer? I was assuming it was the reader device they were referring to, but it seems like those would run software from the manufacturer, not Target.

I noticed that some Target stores have the Verifone MX925 [1] which seem to have been installed in the past year.

jimueller··on Avoiding Spam with Email Aliasing
Personally, I have used both the Gmail alias and the company@example.com strategies. I have since given up both as I found it too hard to remember what address I used where.

The main reason I quit doing this is because Gmail's spam filtering kept spam out of my inbox and I never cared if one of those aliases were "compromised" and it wasn't worth the effort. I guess it was a solution to a problem I never had.

I still use a spam@example.com for those sites that I may need to provide an email address and I don't want to give them my real address, such as forums that make you sign in to see an answer.

jimueller··on Google Play Music on the App Store
Umm, so the company that is giving away free streaming is stingy? How would you describe someone who complains about free things, or an unwillingess to pay for a service?
jimueller··on Yahoo to auction over 100 domain names ranging from $1,000 to $1.5 million
The statement is presented as a fact in the article, yet as even the author admits it is probably not true. So I would agree it is amateur journalism.
jimueller··on SQRL - Replacement for usernames and passwords
Seems similar to the discontinued Google Sesame. http://www.zdnet.com/open-sesame-googles-no-password-log-in-...

It would be interesting to know why Google didn't pursue it. Maybe a 20% project? https://plus.google.com/101935995649723391317/posts/P94xEz9D...

Another similar system http://corp.galois.com/blog/2011/1/5/quick-authentication-us...

jimueller··on MTurk + Google News API = press
Agreed. Surely the ~350 email addresses (although stated about 1/2 were valid) were worth much more than $10. In my opinion, it's unethical.
jimueller··on Announcing TypeScript 0.9.1
It's pretty obvious that's their goal.

"...you can develop TypeScript code using the online playground tool or Visual Studio 2012. But this is not it! You can also use Sublime Text, Vim or eMacs as the team has kicked off work on syntax files for these popular editors JavaScript developers love to use. And as the specification is public, anyone can create their own syntax files for other editors as well."

jimueller··on How Microsoft killed off a massive botnet, with trademark law
I'm really curious why the article states that. So many questions. Do you not have a 65" monitor or is it just not in the living room?
jimueller··on Converting to Powerline on one machine can be a help to your whole house
I had to use Powerline adapters in my apartment and was skeptical because of early problems. I have been very impressed. I've had no problems. Although I don't understand why the manufacturers put 100 Mbps Ethernet on 500 Mbps adapters. Probably because 500 Mbps real world performance is closer to 100 Mbps.
jimueller··on [dead]
This and many of her articles are filed under "Arts and Entertainment"
jimueller··on Nokia Lumia 1020 packs 41-megapixel camera whopper
HERE is a suite of applications.HERE Maps is ... maps, HERE Drive is the GPS/NAV app, and HERE Transit is public transportation.
jimueller··on Norton Ghost discontinued
I interpret that as Ghost is being renamed to SSR with a few new OSs supported.
jimueller··on Amazon search results in the Dash
Yes, that is strange.
