jimueller··on A Docker footgun led to a vandal deleting NewsBlur's MongoDB database
Exactly, like a bank that doesn’t lock it’s vault because the front door is locked.
jimueller··on Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B
Yeah, that’s getting really old. Especially since it’s each site in the family.
jimueller··on How M1 Macs feel faster than Intel models: it’s about QoS
Ah, Windows Phones were very responsive.
jimueller··on Ask HN: Is Twitter Down?
It’s fine
jimueller··on I told a cat food company how much they’d save by using taller cans (2020)
I think the way to do it is to cut one end of, then the other and use it to push the paste out through the can. Doing that I've never had a problem.
jimueller··on Baremetrics required a phone call to cancel
I 100% agree, if you can sign up without a phone call, you should be able to cancel without one. However, at the end of the day, it's just a phone call. It gets a bit dramatic.
jimueller··on FedEx and UPS hit companies with unexpected holiday shipping limits
As a customer, guess what? I get it, it'll take longer to get my stuff. No big deal. It means a lot of people are being responsible, shopping online, and hopefully sending gifts rather than spreading COVID. Retailers should just not make shipping promises they can't keep, reasonable people will understand.
jimueller··on Travis CI is no longer providing CI minutes for open source projects
The Idera way, buy product, fire devs, offshore to feature factory.
jimueller··on Chrome exempts Google sites from user site data settings
Agreed, good to call them out, if this is intentional, but about the only way to stop this stuff is to stop using their browser.

I switched back to Firefox a few years ago. I know they've had their issues recently but still probably the least evil browser.

jimueller··on Automatic SSL Certificates for internal IP's for home k8 setup using LetsEncrypt
split dns is typically the solution for this, is it not?
jimueller··on Del.icio.us
The new owner is the developer of pinboard.in. The pinboard API was modeled after del.icio.us, so it might just be a data import into pinboard exercise.
jimueller··on Website allows you to experience what it is like to live with dyslexia (2016)
This seems pretty normal. I suspect this is similar to reasons why it's hard to read a really wide line of text, or that some people put a sheet of paper under their current line while reading. Something about how our minds can manage smaller groups more easily. Probably related to how telephone numbers split up and why we put commas or spaces in numbers like 1,000,000.
jimueller··on An Airbnb for farmland hits a snag, as farmers raise data privacy concerns
Did you have a bad experience on a farm?

> full of generational land princes who are hicks

That is pretty uncalled for and ignorant. You seem to have an agenda so I'm not going to waste much time other than to say that I see no evidence that you know anything about actual farming.

jimueller··on An Airbnb for farmland hits a snag, as farmers raise data privacy concerns
Did you have specific areas where there should be more automation? There is a lot of automation in farming. The tractors can drive themselves and planters continuously monitor and correct themselves. What is your definition of milking by hand? I suspect the percentage of cows milked by hand is extremely low. Even small family farms use milking machines.
jimueller··on Chloroquine on Google Trends
Good question, seems like it's still being determined, but apparently the US president has made some statements that suggest it does. Being a doctor does come naturally to him of course.
jimueller··on Show HN: Remotehour – Allows people to talk to you anytime you’re available
Hey, I like the idea of trying to make remote more seamless, it's certainly a need. Looks like nice work so far. I do agree with some of the other comments that some folks would like a "knock" type feature to give a warning, clearly you get the concern from your gif. Keep it up and personally I think it's great to see more options for this.
jimueller··on Windows Terminal Preview v0.10 Release
You can launch those shells in the old terminal. Or you can launch them in the new Terminal.
jimueller··on Windows Terminal Preview v0.10 Release
settle, that's why people like it
jimueller··on Encoding your WiFi access point password into a QR code
Indeed, or dialing in 63 chars on a Nest thermostat would take about 10 minutes.
jimueller··on 37-Year-Old Mom Spent Seven Days Online as an 11-Year-Old Girl
Pretty sure FBI provides fake bombs to would-be terrorists as part of sting operations, which is pretty much your example, so yes, you do charge someone with "attempted" murder.
jimueller··on The latest version of Slack has a setting to disable the WYSIWYG editor
How do you know it was social media? I contacted Slack's customer support and asked for a toggle. It could have been my request. The customer support chat was fast, friendly, and professional. I couldn't ask for more.
jimueller··on The Editable PDF Initiative
The FAQ doesn't address it completely in my opinion.

> Many people believe PDF to be “impossible to edit,” but beware: minor edits in PDFs, such as swapping figures on an invoice, are trivial — therefore you need other technologies, such as digital signatures, to verify that your PDFs have not been tampered with.

That's not really the point that it can't be edited, the value to me is that the sender has confidence that it will look the same to the receiver as the sender.

jimueller··on Police Owe Nothing to Man Whose Home They Blew Up, Appeals Court Says
Before we get all crazy here, he decided to tear down the house on his own. It wasn't blown up. Heavily damaged yes? Salvagable, probably. Insurance game him money. He spent a bunch of money on a bigger new house.

It's like getting into a car accident and going to buy a nicer, more expensive car before the insurance comes back. Sure you can do it, but that's on you to pay.

jimueller··on Soundex – a phonetic algorithm for indexing names by sound
I wonder why Wisconsin went through the trouble vs some incrementing id. It seems like it was understood 2 people could end up with the same number so the last two digits were added. That would rule out the benefit of unique ids without requiring a single central system to ensure uniqueness.

It does make it harder to fake an id, perhaps that was the motivation.

Edit: Some more interesting info for the states that implement this. Also, TIL Illinois drivers can appear to have the exact same DL number. http://www.highprogrammer.com/alan/numbers/dl_us_shared.html

jimueller··on Disney: Bob Iger bets the company (and Hollywood's future) on streaming
Wow, such a visionary in 2019.
jimueller··on I Survived the “Destroying Angel” (2006)
Sorry, but this is just so irresponsible. I'm sure I'll be corrected, but it almost needlessly resulted in taking a liver away from someone that needed it not as a result of their own stupidity. Oh, and then while in an emergency room on the brink of death questions why the alternative medicine some friend found online was never used.
jimueller··on Regarding Last Weekend’s Hearthstone Grandmasters Tournament
Swing and a miss

You are jumping to conclusions. Because the HN UI is not everyone's cup of tea, there are a lot of people that have reworked the UI for mobile, etc. Also, there isn't or wasn't an HN API, so scraping was the only option. Finally, there's a lot of people who take on the exercise for fun, so you get "HN in VueJS" which aren't nefarious, just exercises.

Look at your results, why would you think "React HN clone" on github.io was something other than just a personal fun project.

jimueller··on A Kernel Engineer at Microsoft's Answer to “What Do You Think about ReactOS?”
Just going to throw this out there, if Microsoft cared that anyone viewed it, wouldn't they have taken it down by now?
jimueller··on A Kernel Engineer at Microsoft's Answer to “What Do You Think about ReactOS?”
This is the first sensible comment in here. A lot of jumping to conclusions.
