jelling··on Netflix raises prices on all plans in US
Someone in the industry told me that they don’t renew shows after a couple of years because they would have to pay more for them. Basically, they’re operating like a sports team that relies on rookie contacts to maintain profitability.
jelling··on The Tipping Point: The Economics of Taxi Fares
ITT: people that are high wage earners in the industry with the highest potential upward mobility that want to argue about the basis and percentage of tips for people doing the work with the least possible upward mobility.

Tipping, at a minimum, is social grease, and to the extent that you want it to be, redistributive economics with near zero administrative overhead.

jelling··on The Charles Mingus CAT-alog (1972)
That's cat's balance is the key here. I tried this with a hairless cat - whom also have very little in the way of whiskers - and the poor thing just didn't have the balance to handle the final steps.
jelling··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
This. And as much as I love listening to music, going without any headphones and just hearing whatever it is you are in the middle of can be centering.
jelling··on Tumblr has added more strict tag filtering for their iOS app
Reddits revenue per user is terrible compared to Facebook ($0.30 vs $7):

jelling··on Joan Didion has died
Then you'd probably love "Powerbroker: Robert Moses and the Death of New York" by Robert Caro. Long, but he's a master.
jelling··on Optimizing Your Wife
> If a man can expect to meet exactly N eligible women in his life, what strategy should he use to maximize his chances of choosing the very best one?

If you show her this article and she's still into you, that's the right one for you.

jelling··on The Universal Structure of Storytelling
Counterpoint argument based on the Japanese/Korean story structure called kishōtenketsu:

> The necessity of conflict is preached as a kind of dogma by contemporary writers’ workshops and Internet “guides” to writing. A plot without conflict is considered dull; some even go so far as to call it impossible. This has influenced not only fiction, but writing in general–arguably even philosophy. Yet, is there any truth to this belief? Does plot necessarily hinge on conflict? No. Such claims are a product of the West’s insularity. For countless centuries, Chinese and Japanese writers have used a plot structure that does not have conflict “built in”, so to speak. Rather, it relies on exposition and contrast to generate interest. This structure is known as kishōtenketsu.

Also, there are numerous highly regarded, non-Hollywood films that do not rely on the traditional confrontational story arc. "Killer of Sheep" and "Patterson" are two off the top of my head.

So "Universal Structure of Storytelling" seems a bit over-sold.

jelling··on Lush Exits Social Media
While some see this as a marketing stunt, I think it's a successful founder that now dramatically over-estimates his personal importance:

> "I'm not willing to expose my customers to this harm, so it's time to take it out of the mix." {Lush co-founder Mark Constantine}

Trust me, they're not using social media because of your brand and less ads definitely won't drive them away. I bet he's gone within a year.

jelling··on Robert Bly has died
“The Winged Energy of Delight” by Bly is an excellent selection of translations he did of poets from around the world. Rip, Mr Bly.
jelling··on Next.js 12
Blitz.js is a superset of NextJS that should do what you want
jelling··on We want to fix GitHub Actions
If the dev machine is the fastest horse and the dev is waiting on the CI, wouldn’t it make more sense to have an option that optionally self-hosts the CI process on the dev machine when desired?

I could be wrong but I’m concerned about the business thesis. Even if more cloud speed is the answer, GitHub can add this and at a lower cost, and for as long as it matters, lower margin.

Perhaps the CI speed is just an attack vector for the dev ops market in general.

jelling··on 'Cottagecore' and the rise of the modern rural fantasy
Previous comment was a quote from the song “Losing My Edge” by LCD Soundsystem. The genius of the lyrics is in sardonically complaining about the new generation but also admitting the real problem is that the singer is growing old.
jelling··on The Case for ‘Developer Experience’
Blitz.js is worth a look as it supports both out of the box
jelling··on Ask HN: Improving health despite working in a screen-based job
One thing that might help with the leaning: get a standing desk with a horizontal cross bar. This gives you another position where you can put one foot up and prop yourself backwards from the desk.

The leaning itself is a function of TimeStanding > CurrentStrength. Even if the horizontal bar reduces 50% of the load, you'll still end up doing more standing reps/work if you have a cheater bar. Eventually you may not need it at all, but it's also great for keeping the desk from wobbling.

UpLift's commercial line has them and the extra cost is well worth it, imho.

jelling··on RIP Jekyll (The Genesis of the Jamstack)
You definitely have a place in open source. Good teams have a variety of skills so if public-facing communication isn’t your thing, partner with at least one person that likes doing that.
jelling··on Ask HN: How has GraphQL panned out for your organization?
At a minimum, GraphQL skips the problem of having one or few engineers re-invent the wheel of how to pass queries to an API. Or if you’re lucky, how to document it.

REST Api design is probably one of the least value-add activities a company can involve itself in. Any standard that defines a standard way of performing set operations, GraphQL or even the ancient ODATA, is superior.

jelling··on Problems with Oracle SQL
This comment smells like mead and dwarves.
jelling··on A soft, wearable brain–machine interface
All I want is to never have to look for the right window again while switching apps. Such a tiny but constant tax on focus.
jelling··on How the Wire’s Omar Changed TV
The first episode (the “pilot”) of most dramas isn’t a great measure because they have to do so much work to a setup the world and the characters. So they can be very workman-like as they’re intended first and foremost to sell executives on the show. I honestly don’t like watching most pilots so I’ve trained myself to at least give shows two episodes to compensate.

Comedy is different. If the first episode isn’t funny it rarely improves imho. One doesn’t build a funny character slowly; the human frailties that make them funny are obvious, typically to everyone but them.

jelling··on Climate activist arrested after ProtonMail provided his IP address
Also ProtonMail's only reason for being is that they are supposed to provide some higher level of privacy. If they don't, how are they any different than a commodity grade SMTP/IMAP provider? I will withhold judgement until I know more about the case but the early context does not look good for ProtonMail's value proposition, which is the least of things.
jelling··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
I did an interview with Reddit - whom I hope sees this comment - and they not only provided zero information about the context of the tech interview in advance, or whether it would be one, but also the interview itself was like playing a random version of tech Jeopardy, but without the category columns, and very few of the questions had anything to do with the job I would be doing.

I have over 20 years of programming experience, am a founder, and have worked for multiple venture backed startups. That includes hiring countless developers, so I get both sides of the situation. And my partner is also a tech recruiter for a top tier HFT / market maker, so I know what a demanding but respectful hiring process looks like.

Reddit’s hiring process converted me from a fan of the site into someone that thought the entire organization was second tier - which obviously it is in terms of monetization - but also in how they treat people compared to the FAANGs. And a year later the role is still open.

jelling··on Node.js binding for libobs – OBS studio's internal library
Curious, is SLOBS not architected to run OBS separately as service? Electron has its issues but, for example, a Slack client crash does not take down the service.
jelling··on Full-body tracking in VR using AprilTag markers
Given unlimited AprilTags, how would this approach compare to a depth camera and Xsens/Rokoko mocap suit?
jelling··on CIA’s turn to admit to its fiasco
Is there evidence that the CIA as of recent had an inaccurate view of the situation in Afghanistan? I couldn’t find it in the article but it could be.

What happened in Vietnam was that the CIA had a very accurate view of the situation but the military loudly and repeatedly claimed everything was going well. Depending on the day, LBJ either wanted to believe that or felt he had to maintain the fiction in order not to lose in ‘68. I wouldn’t be surprised if history rhymes here.

jelling··on Law school applicants surge 13%, biggest increase since dot-com bubble
Knowing how to code prepares you to deal with lawyers that say something is complex but then you verbally break it down into an if-elseif-else in 5m and they get flummoxed. And when you find a possible bug / loop-hole / fuzziness, they tell you they will need weeks to research it on your dime when it has all the complexity of a stack overflow post.
jelling··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
Shout out sleep, bc that ~33% of our lives is actually not wasted time in any way.
jelling··on Barry Diller: The movie business as before is finished and will never come back
Every top comment on HN is someone with an unprofitable use case complaining that no one serves them. Change my mind.
jelling··on Hire-to-fire at Amazon India?
My friend works there and said that virtually everyone gets dropped a rank on the way in. It’s so common that people commonly introduce themselves as “I’m an X but pre-Amazon I was an X+1”.
jelling··on Amazon Prime inflates prices, using the false promise of ‘free shipping’
The main reason Amazon has kicked the crap out of their competitors is that they built a multi-billion dollar fulfillment platform that is better than anything out there.

Whatever degree of effect that building shipping costs into pricing has given them is negligible in comparison. And it is dead simple for even small retailers to do this with most e-Commerce tools including Shopify.
