jeffjose··on WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum: “Most of startup ideas are absolutely stupid”
Not OP mistake, but the title is click-baity as hell. Yes, it is a direct quote, but that was mentioned in passing to a question of whether he'd invest in any.
jeffjose··on United isn't entirely to blame for David Dao's controversial removal from flight
I'm sorry, I don't agree.

The offending party (in the court of law) might be the security officers. But as a passenger, Dr. Dao bought the ticket from United and it was their responsibility to treat him with dignity and safely transport him to his final destination. The situation arose due to lapse in United's protocols -- which was probably enforced by Chicago Airport Security officials.

I could make another argument, for the security officers, that they were just following protocols. Maybe the gate agents let the security know that the passenger isn't leaving even after "politely" requesting him to. The security officers, hence rightfully, assumed he was a threat to other passengers and used force.

All of this comes down to the fact that United started this, and they could have easily avoided the whole thing.

jeffjose··on H-1B visas mainly go to Indian outsourcing firms
> Americans don't get PhDs because graduate schools are flooded with applications from those trying to gain entry to the US. Once in industry foreigners tend to hire only members of their own race further discouraging Americans from pursuing advanced degrees.

That's not true. The American Universities don't choose to admit foreign students just because. The good schools always try to balance the mix of students admitted into the program.

> you're not welcome

This makes me sad.

jeffjose··on Mini.css: Minimal, responsive, style-agnostic CSS framework
Pedantic. Wondering why you used 'its a pity' twice. I want to believe it was pure luck, but otherwise it sounds snarky.
jeffjose··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2017)
I dropped my resume for PM (Technical) on the website a while back and I haven't heard back from you guys yet, outside of the automated "Thanks for applying" email.

Is there an email that I can reach you guys at?

jeffjose··on Uber's experiment in behavioral science to subtly entice drivers
What do you mean they acquired Bing Maps from Microsoft? Bing Maps is owned by Uber now? Sorry if this is common-knowledge to everyone; I don't remember reading about it.
jeffjose··on Uber's experiment in behavioral science to subtly entice drivers
My initial assumption was they were made of d3.js (SVG) but looking at the inspector they seem to be canvas elements (<canvas>).

I didn't see any mention on d3.js in the js libraries being pulled in, so not sure.

jeffjose··on Ask HN: Why use Python?
Are you confusing Python with Perl? The latter prides itself on creating line-noise that works like magic. Python is meant to be super-readable.
jeffjose··on Google Gnome – Google Store
OK, Gnome is better than saying OK, Google. I still can't believe Google decided NOT to give its personal assistant a name and personality.
jeffjose··on Building a Hackintosh Pro
After years of making fun of Linux folks for having to "know everything about the computer" to get things working, Mac folks seem to be embracing the culture these days.
jeffjose··on Linux becoming a professional multimedia platform
DreamWorks Animation uses RHEL exclusively for production. That means all your favorite movies such as Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon were all made on Linux

Ninja edit to add high end software that runs on Linux that were used - Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, Foundry {Mari,Nuke}, Pixologic ZBrush. This is in addition to the proprietary packages such as Premo (Animation) and Torch (Lighting)

jeffjose··on Frustrated Snap Social Influencers Leaving for Rival Platforms
They are entertainers. And that's a full time profession. The way they make money is by plugging different brands, and that's the only difference.

jeffjose··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
Investors, by very definition, are (part) owners. And management is put in place by the board, that owners/investors control

Thanks so much for checking the tool out!

If you notice something funky, let me know. If you have feedback on improvements, feature requests.. those are welcome as well!

jeffjose··on Please, Fix This Shitty Website
This site itself is an epitome of the bland website design.
jeffjose··on MacBook Pro Launch: Perplexing
Tight lockdown of their ecosystem should make it easier not harder. A more open company, such as Microsoft, would have customers that use all sorts of compatible devices and accessories to worry about. One could argue Apple has it easy. Most people use their devices in predictable configuration.
jeffjose··on Why we chose Vue.js over React
Check out Weex
jeffjose··on This Week in Rails: jQuery no longer part of Rails, and more
The amount of arrogance in this comment is very telling. While jQuery isnt used to build modern webapps, what jQuery did for web development is no small feat. Yes, you dont use Wright brothers' aircraft to fly people these days, but dont compare an early (and pioneering) tool against best practices of the day
jeffjose··on Firebug extension has been discontinued
Precisely. The web-developer world we take for granted was singlehandedly brought to life by Firebug. What used to be alert("foo") was replaced with console.logs, and there was no going back. Its probably a good thing that Firebug is discontinued. It has fared well, and made the world a better place.
jeffjose··on Why 2016 is such a terrible year for the Mac
That'll mean a whole new set of softwares. The current software (think photoshop) won't work on ARM processor

jeffjose··on Uber launches flat fares in San Francisco through subscription
I thought that was clear. What were you confusing that with? I'm trying to understand what you initially thought it was.
jeffjose··on World Wide Web (1991)
Damn. Only 25 years old. Puts things in perspective. Its not often that you live through a "before" and "after" to something as huge as this. (9/11 is probably another)
jeffjose··on GitHub Security Update: Reused Password Attack
Correct me if I'm wrong, but rainbow table is for popular password and character combinations yes? If my password is s0m3th1nggsup33rhard, you cant make out the string from the rainbow table.
jeffjose··on Google Fonts Redesigned
Is that Angular 1 or Angular 2?
jeffjose··on How “Silicon Valley” Nails Silicon Valley
I'd love to see some sources on that as well. You dont think the spoiler in Sixth Sense wouldnt have ruined your experience?
jeffjose··on Please don't send me smart replies
Almost everything that technology touched has been 'dehumanized' in some way or the other. It was initially email. How can I take something seriously if its sent as an email, and when the sender has virutally zero cost in doing so. Overtime, we've come to accept that as a norm

I'd reckon smart replies would follow a similar path. Might look odd, but would become natural in a few years.
