What if there was a word for a group of men, a word for a group of woman and a non-gendered word for a mixed group?

I use Firefox on Ubuntu and do not have this issue - is there something more specific that triggers this behavior? Have a link to the bug tracker?

jedi_stannis··on Why should we all wear face masks?
> Why? The U.S. CDC and most experts agree that many infected and contagious people don’t know they’re sick because they don’t have symptoms.

jedi_stannis··on Scientists Are Planning to Run for Office
> This is a squandered opportunity to try to get scientific minded people into running for the republican seats, which is how you would get real change in the discourse.

I believe his point is that getting scientists into Republican seats might re-shape the party from being anti-science, to being a pro-science, fiscally conservative alternative to the Democrats.

One of the major parties being unacceptable is highly problematic.

jedi_stannis··on Bitcoin Technology Piques Interest on Wall Street
What if instead of coopting the tech, they add their resources to the existing blockchain, making it more robust?
jedi_stannis··on Porting a NES Emulator from Go to Nim
Thanks, that first post is really interesting. Two things stand out to me:

* Run regular code at run time - does this just error if you try to use const on something that depends on a runtime value?

* Add your own optimizations to the compiler - isn't this very dangerous, especially if optimizations from various sources of code get combined? Even if your optimizations are valid (which there seems to be no guarantee of), computer math is notorious for being different from real math. People unaware of the nuances of integers rolling over or floating point seem like they could easily shoot themselves in the foot here.

jedi_stannis··on The sum of all the positive integers is not -1/12
No, the title is right. The sum is not -1/12, there is no sum because it diverges. The Ramanujan summation is not the real summation, its a way to assign a sum to divergent series which can be useful in some cases.
jedi_stannis··on Coinbase Crosses 650,000 Users
There is no central controlling authority you need to trust to not seize your digital currency.
jedi_stannis··on How Gmail’s New Inbox Is Affecting Open Rates
1.5 years is 78 weeks. 12.5B emails / 78 weeks ~ 160 million emails a week.

6 weeks * 160 million ~ 960 million emails.

So the last 6 weeks is 156% of the average. That seems like good growth, not unbelievable growth.

I would love a chapter on Monan Transformers. Its one concept I can't seem to wrap my brain around and a LYAH style chapter seems like the perfect thing to help me understand it.
jedi_stannis··on Future Searching
Yes, but its not turnkey. It takes a certain level of skill to put up a landing page and track clicks on your "Buy now" button. I think he wants all of these things to be super simple.

jedi_stannis··on "Task Pooper" could revolutionize GNOME desktop
Yeah, naming has never been free software's strong point. I had a hard time understanding what it was until I read the pdf in the linked blog post. Hopefully by the time the idea is fleshed out and presented to a more mainstream audience there will be a better explanation of what it is and no sign of the poor code name left.
jedi_stannis··on Many programming languages have infix expressions, but get associativity wrong
Yes it is really pulling a syntactic trick and not comparing against bools. From the docs:

Comparisons can be chained arbitrarily, e.g., x < y <= z is equivalent to x < y and y <= z, except that y is evaluated only once.

Thanks! This is exactly what I've been looking for. A dynamic language with Haskell-like syntax.

My solution is a little bit more hackish, but more usable imo. Not thoroughly tested though, might have some implications I haven't thought of.

jedi_stannis··on Self-Enforcing Protocols
I think his point was that current third party mediators will not be happy to be cut out of the equation. Even though the system will be more efficient without them, they will try to do whatever they can to still get their share of the transaction.
jedi_stannis··on Ask HN: Best Mathematics book for complete noobie?
I haven't picked it up yet, but I remember reading about "The Princeton Companion to Mathematics" on here a while ago. It looks like a pretty complete guide to all of modern mathematics and sounded like it was easy enough for a beginner to get through while still being able to teach math experts some new things.

Thanks for reminding me about it - I think I'm going to order my self a copy!

jedi_stannis··on Dan Weinreb: Programming with concurrency, clojure excitement
No need to learn a new editor. There is a great plugin to use Vim with Clojure. I've always been a Vim user and think its great, although I've never used SLIME so I can't directly compare.

jedi_stannis··on Lisp outside the Box (O'Reilly book)
The reason seems to just be that LISP books generally don't sell well. And it seems to still be in their submission guidelines.

http://oreilly.com/oreilly/author/writeforus_1101.html

"Books on topics that have dismal sales despite quality books being available. (If you're addressing a topic where good books have sold dismally in the past (for instance, LISP, LaTeX, or Web-based training),"
