jdpigeon··on Launch HN: Bend (YC S22) – Automatically measure your company's carbon footprint
I'm quite worried about the viability of CO2 offset markets in the absence of legislative action from the US. Since the Supreme Court and Joe Manchin seem to have doomed our chances for stricter CO2 emissions regulation, what's going to incentive companies to purchase more offsets? Is there hope from Europe? China?
jdpigeon··on The Supreme Court’s Latest Decision Is a Blow to Stopping Climate Change
That's an interesting argument. My counter for globalization is that it leads to developed countries taking the lead in policy decisions for other countries around the world. One example is the US controlled substances act being copied nearly identically around the world. It's possible that if the US hadn't passed that law, most countries would have had legal pot throughout the 20th century.

I'm afraid that the supreme court stifling the ability of the US to legislate against carbon emissions is going to slow down the entire world who has been looking to the US as an example on what to do.

jdpigeon··on Ask HN: Why is Lex Fridman so successful with his “tech” podcasts?
I've been curious about this too, because he seems like a wet blanket of an interviewer to me.

Maybe his neutral, staid approach is non-threatening to famous people?

jdpigeon··on Lavender's Game: Silexan for Anxiety
This is Scott Alexander, previously from Slate Star Codex. He's highly respected as a blogger about psychiatry
jdpigeon··on My diet of almost only red meat
Sounds like this guy is in the category of people for whom keto diets can work wonders. It's definitely not worth it for me, I've tried, and I suspect it's the same for most people.
jdpigeon··on What I learned during my three days offline
I'm not sure if I'm more likely than the regular person to be addicted to the internet because I'm so plugged in to the industry or less so because I "know how the sausage is made" and have been very conscious of my usage patterns over years.

Still, I agree that it seems to be a pervasive thing, and I do believe a little reset period like the author describes would, on average, do the population some good.

jdpigeon··on What I learned during my three days offline
Speak for yourself, man, cause it can get bad. During the work week I can sometimes go from unconsciousness to TikTok to podcasts to web development to Zoom to Twitter to Spotify to YouTube and back to TikTok and then to sleep without any real breaks in between. One can get into this habit of exhausted yet nervous information seeking -- "doing without doing".

I think three days off might be just what I need.

jdpigeon··on Difficult situation on campus: traffic jam of food delivery robots
Are these human piloted? Someone mentioned that they might be driven by poorly paid workers?
jdpigeon··on It is difficult for the average person to conceive of how useless NFTs are
Yea, I agree.

The dark thing about NFTs IMO is that they only seem like they would work in a "world" where everything was locked down and rights-protected to the detriment of the user experience. In other words, all those "layers" where digital ownership could get fuzzy were removed by operating on some aggressive platform or protocol, like a Fortnite style Metaverse without copy + paste, local file storage, or self-hosting.

jdpigeon··on It is difficult for the average person to conceive of how useless NFTs are
Well, if it's not immutable then someone can replace the asset that you "own" just by updating what's served when you try to access that url: https://twitter.com/moxie/status/1448066579611234305

If the asset hosting is both immutable then you're guaranteed to always get the thing that you bought from the url your NFT points too. By being "distributed" I think the idea is the immutability is more guaranteed since no one person will be able to control the database.

jdpigeon··on It is difficult for the average person to conceive of how useless NFTs are
I'm not pro-NFT in any way, but this other Twitter thread raises some interesting counter-arguments to this common criticism: https://twitter.com/dabit3/status/1456399715646513153

TL;DR NFTs that point to centralized mutable databases like s3 are a bad idea, but people are working on immutable data storage technologies like IPFS.

Man, the authors should have explained that in the abstract. "Tradeoffs in attributes" does not cut it

100% this would be a good time for the government to step in mandate a standard.
jdpigeon··on Krita 4.4.0
If there's something that GIMP can do that Krita can't, I never encountered it in over two years of using it for front end development and graphic design work.
jdpigeon··on Ask HN: Newly Remote Workers – Where Are You Moving?
In Brooklyn too and this summer's been great. Don't have to take the subway. All the bars and restaurants have patios, and my friends and I can get together for hikes and BBQs every weekend. However, I'm worried the QoL is gonna tank once the weather stops being so nice because I every one of these pandemic-resistant activies is weather-dependent
jdpigeon··on We Tested Instagram Reels, the TikTok Clone. What a Dud
I find this an uplifting reminder that it's still possible for competition to happen in the world of social media.
jdpigeon··on JazzKeys: Type to improvise Jazz music
godamnit, another side project idea that I'll never find the time to finish!
jdpigeon··on Microfinance Is Mostly a Scam (2015)
I know. Author should have mentioned the unused body parts came from livestock because that is NOT the image that popped into my head at first.
jdpigeon··on Why are some people better at working from home than others?
I think it's context dependent. I did two months of quarantine isolated in a 500sqft apartment and experienced slowly deteriorating mental health culminating in a mental breakdown. Now, I'm in a 1200sqft apartment with two close friends, a patio, and a dog. I am happy as ever and crushing work from home now that I was able to find a sustaining environment.

...On October 28, "Black Monday,"[10] more investors facing margin calls decided to get out of the market, and the slide continued with a record loss in the Dow for the day of 38.33 points, or 12.82%

jdpigeon··on Airbnb’s loss nearly doubles in fourth quarter, before virus
This is how I see Airbnb in 2020. Big cities have cracked down on people renting out their places and all the idealist hosts have left. Hotels are getting cheaper to compete. The one thing that Airbnb still seems to be great at is ultra-trendy "experience" homes like solar-powered biodomes in the desert or cross-laminated timber cabins in the mountains.
jdpigeon··on Show HN: Fraidycat
I would really really love this for mobile. 90% of my mindless browsing that I'd like to take control of happens on my phone.

jdpigeon··on My biggest fear: Taking time off, relaxing and resting
Has anyone had a good experience with a "coach" like this guy? I had a few sessions with a psychodynamic therapist that I thought were pleasant but mostly pointless because there was no accountability or impetus to actually change my behavior
jdpigeon··on So You Think You Want to Open a Brewery (2014)
Saw your comment after basically making the same point to the parent. You really nailed it, especially with regards to shelf life and scale.

Thinking of it, all the times I remember being really knocked off my feet by a malt-forward beer was on draft at small scale breweries.
