jdpigeon··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
There's probably some mathematical relationship between car dependency, time, and urban sprawl too.

Back in the 70s there may have been 1 or 2 affordable neighborhoods in your metro area where people in their late 20s could buy a house -- and they were both probably fairly close to the city center. Nowdays, I'd say those neighborhoods are likely to be farther away from the city center (exurbs) and thus farther away from each other.

I think about this with my hometown friends in the PNW. Growing up we all lived in Bellevue, Redmond, and Kirkland, and now those areas are all too expensive and folks are living in Issaquah, Duvall, Renton, etc.

jdpigeon··on I spent twenty years becoming good at the wrong game
Well said. When I was a grad student, chasing what would have been a doomed career in cellular neuroscience, I was unfortunate enough (fortunately in the end, perhaps?) to get struck down by a significant depressive episode. This ended up being the feedback signal I needed to consider changing things up, and I did.
jdpigeon··on Steam Controller Auto-Charge – pilot to magnetic charging puck using CV
Yea, interesting how this outs the README as AI Generated.

I don't think any human would ever write a sentence like this without first explaining THE FREAKING CONTROLLER IS MOVING BY VIBRATING

Proximity Creep Mode: Automatically cuts haptic pulse frequency by 50% when the controller is within 150 pixels of the puck to ensure a gentle magnetic dock.

jdpigeon··on Petition against Meta's employee training data collection for ML models
Don't worry, it's happening
jdpigeon··on Petition against Meta's employee training data collection for ML models
100%. Canaries in the coal mine.
jdpigeon··on Meta pauses AI training program tracking employee keystrokes after internal leak
This leak coming after all the reassurances that the intitiative passed privacy review and wouldn't be a leak risk is soo damning.

Not only have the employees lost faith in the executive's integrity, but their basic competency as well.

jdpigeon··on Mmorpg World of ClaudeCraft, vibe coded with Fable 5
You'd be a fool to spend more than 30 seconds on it if you'd played an actual MMO anytime in the last five years. It's immediately apparent how poor quality AI-generated games like this are.
jdpigeon··on Mmorpg World of ClaudeCraft, vibe coded with Fable 5
Hey. This is a total nightmare in my opinion. The dark mirror of something that I know and love and represents one of the highlights of human digital authorship.

If you'd like to play the actual game with other SWEs I'd invite you to help me start a guild for SWEs: https://unplanned-downtime.com/

jdpigeon··on Talk Is Cheap: The Operational Impact of LLM Use
This effect is likely be excarcebated in teams which are suffering layoffs this year. Even less people to clear the in-flight queue of partially complete tasks
jdpigeon··on I want to live like Costco people
That's about $200 a koku at Costco
jdpigeon··on Taste in the age of AI and LLMs
Seriously. Very Claude-y vibes from this post. I guess the value of human effort doesn’t extend to writing your own blog posts
jdpigeon··on OpenCode – Open source AI coding agent
Did not realize this. That's bizarre!
jdpigeon··on Smartphones and being present
A few years ago I traded my huge Google Pixel 6 for a 3 inch Uniherz Jelly.

It's not perfect, as I still spend a lot of time on Reddit and HN on the tiny screen while commuting, but it's moved the needle for me.

jdpigeon··on How bad are childhood literacy rates?
Hmm, it seems that time spent with children has actually been increasing

jdpigeon··on Show HN: Brutalist Hacker News – A HN reader inspired by brutalist web design
This is cool! However I think the page is not interacting with the back button functionality correctly, at least on mobile.
jdpigeon··on Generative UI and outcome-oriented design
Yeah. Unclear after reading this whether anything meeting their definition of GenUI actually exists or whether this is just speculation

jdpigeon··on Young adults and mental health: Is more childhood independence the answer?
Indeed, the one upside of Cul-de-sac suburbs!

But really, kids should be able to do that in a park instead of having to scramble whenever a car pulls up.

jdpigeon··on Young adults and mental health: Is more childhood independence the answer?
What the Fox News are you talking about?
jdpigeon··on The Magic of Alleyways
Lovely article. I wish the author would have spent more words explaining why he is so against laneway houses, though.
jdpigeon··on Show HN: Web search using a ChatGPT-like model that can cite its sources
This is amazing!
jdpigeon··on What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise?
There was a rather compelling pathway proposed years ago: skeletal muscle activation leads to the secretion of a protein in the blood called Irisin. This protein then crosses the blood-brain barrier and upregulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
jdpigeon··on Employee gift ideas that make people feel bad
For me the best company gifts are small mundane things printed with company-specific inside jokes. Coffee mugs with quotes from the team, references to past projects or humorous incidents, that kind of thing. I'm not going to bring that stuff outside the office, but it does a lot to make me feel like a m member of the team in an "I was there" way.
