jcc80··on NSA speaks out on Snowden, spying [video]
It may not be simple but it helps when you have the questions in advance.

"So that he would be prepared to answer, I sent the question to Director Clapper’s office a day in advance. After the hearing was over, my staff and I gave his office a chance to amend his answer," Wyden said.

jcc80··on NSA speaks out on Snowden, spying [video]
Like how they start off right away saying Snowden cheated on the test to get hired and then discuss his "weird" habits. Seems the same as most high profile interviews - the interviewer is so thrilled to get an exclusive they just gobble up whatever they're told.
jcc80··on [dead]
Well, just because someone gets on stage and tells jokes doesn't mean they're a comedian.
jcc80··on Show HN: I made a SaaS that helps keep freelancer's pipeline full - with no code
Try https://www.creamhq.com/ for personalized. Upside is the matching. Down side is that if nothing fits what you're looking for, you of course receive nothing.
jcc80··on Kima15: $150K for 15% in 15 days
Agreed - it was painful but worth the time to change background to teal w/ StyleBot Chrome extension. Really like how this is all laid out and the term sheet is right there at the bottom.
jcc80··on Why the tech press is ignoring Zulily's huge IPO
He's just being honest and saying one will get more page views than another, not evaluating the merits of the underlying businesses. Perfectly rational since it's what he's been incentivized to care about.
jcc80··on Google Security Team Member on NSA: "Fuck These Guys"
There's no conundrum. You take what you can get, when you can get it - especially with how Washington functions today. The other big name groups recognize this. Perfect is the enemy of good here.
jcc80··on Mint sucks, so why aren't there any real competitors in that space?
Have been using it for 3 years and the occasional problems pale in comparison to the utility I've gotten from it. Have recommended it and set it up for less tech savvy family members.

Simple on the other hand is pretty useless to me. The rates are awful and it's just a nice looking app - really don't get it. But suppose I don't fit the use case they pivoted to before launch since I don't set budgets and more just keep tabs on when money comes in or out. Will probably end up closing my account there but your idea of becoming more like Mint (linking accounts) could make it useful.

jcc80··on It’s time for Silicon Valley to ask: Is it worth it?
"with Andy Garcia" - was Al Pacino but either way that's an interesting comparison. Hadn't thought about it that way before.
jcc80··on Announcing The Dark Mail Alliance – Founded by Silent Circle and Lavabit
"Well, Bob, as your viewers may know, 'Smith Mail' came out of a group that calls themselves 'The Dark Mail Alliance'. This is a group of anti-government hackers that..."
jcc80··on Beliefs that helped us build a $270 million company in 5 years
It's in the first sentence - interclick, acquired by Yahoo for $270 MM couple years ago.
jcc80··on Why The New Gmail Sucks
Also recall reading a justification that less formatting should be used in emails and that was part of the UI decision. Don't recall whether that was from Gmail team or a writer editorializing but fact is I use formatting to make my emails more clear to people. This whole new idea of having quick conversations through email feels like trying to shove a square peg in a round hole to me.
jcc80··on iOS 7 before and after screenshots
Awful, just awful. Very surprised to see a company that has design as such a focus blow it like this. The flat design doesn't help the user (imho) and actually hurts him/her. It takes longer to understand and discern between different elements in apps. Can't wait for iOS 8.
jcc80··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
Exactly. Right now the "in your face" abuse is happening to a relatively small portion of people (privacy of millions being violated but they don't all feel it yet). Easy for everyone else to sit back in comfort and think it won't happen to them or the others somehow deserved it. When it happens to more people then an outrageous edge case can serve as the tipping point.
jcc80··on Bradley Manning's Post-Sentencing Statement
"taking his story at face value requires adopting a position of spectacular naiveté."

It really doesn't. Just need ability to put yourself in the other person's shoes. Admittedly not easy. Hard enough to do when building an app for users, let alone analyzing someone else's life choices.

jcc80··on AOL CEO Fires Somebody for Pulling Out a Camera in a Meeting About Layoffs
"that doesn't mean they're any less important or valid."

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

jcc80··on AOL CEO Fires Somebody for Pulling Out a Camera in a Meeting About Layoffs
Not sure who decides what's officially mature & professional but suspect it's a matter of opinion.
jcc80··on AOL CEO Fires Somebody for Pulling Out a Camera in a Meeting About Layoffs
Maybe I'm old fashioned but I think the story is that someone thought it was OK to randomly start filming a company meeting - one where they were discussing future layoffs & partnerships apparently.

edit: don't know if they were filming or taking still shots - either way.

jcc80··on Ask HN: Advice on how to best spend $3,000
Customers should be funding your hardware purchases. If you don't have customers yet then go find some and get enough of them to prepay and agree to use your service so that you can afford the hardware, etc. Because, if you're not able to build a list of customers that will prepay then this business is in trouble. Better to get yourself into that "sales mode" sooner rather than later. Since the margin for error isn't great ($3k) you definitely want to focus on getting customers first and leasing servers as the other commenter suggested.
jcc80··on iOS 7
Agreed - this design is very disappointing. I want to be able to glance at my phone and understand what I'm looking at as easily as possible. Another person in this thread mentioned waking up from sleep and looking at their phone - that's exactly it for me. I'm not getting AARP magazine yet (early 30s), just want using my phone to be easy.
jcc80··on How An Introvert Learned To Be A Leader
Some people have to take charge because it's too stressful for them if they aren't in control. Others want the power/status of managing people. Maybe you just you value other things like family, alone time or cheesecake.
jcc80··on How the US Government will Smear, Slight Whistleblower Edward Snowden
I don't see the trick. I see a list of things someone wrote so that they can write a follow up post saying essentially, "I called it!"

All those things you want him to write about are for another article. The author isn't under any obligation to provide a complete analysis of this topic. And, it's pretty clear he agrees with Snowden so why not just leave it at that? It's just a blog with an opinion, not a scientific paper.

jcc80··on How the US Government will Smear, Slight Whistleblower Edward Snowden
"Snowden is also making himself a part of the story, and making claims that are not directly backed up by the material that has been released thus far."

So why not ignore the noise & leave it for the gossip pages while focussing on the bigger picture?

jcc80··on Poll: how much would you pay to get issues resolved on GitHub?
https://www.catincan.com does something similar except that developers choose what to put up for funding and only the main devs can seek funding on the platform. Think http://www.freedomsponsors.org is the original as far as open source crowdfunding.
jcc80··on Peter Molyneux may have just monetized trolling
Maybe save it for an example in your book? Your blog already has enough great material to establish your place at the forefront of modern philosophy. Now it's just a question of marketing. Kickstarter campaign for your book sounds good. And to those who have down voted Mr. Church I can only say, how dare you.
jcc80··on No, Fuck Off
Too bad you're going to pass on the opportunity the recruiter was offering. You could have unlocked your "bragging rights" achievement badge.

Personally, I think it's irrelevant how much money her mom has and this could be a great teaching lesson for her daughter. The modern day lemonade stand.

But...I don't think her daughter has much to do with this: http://i.imgur.com/F03oG3e.png (picture of Larry King & Donald Trump with their "trophy wives") or this http://i.imgur.com/Y0yH2OK.png (I think it's a Greek billionaire w/ younger woman but not sure). If this was a project for a 9 yr old girl it would be much more about the actual project. Instead, it appears the mom is trying to take advantage of feminists who might be down after the whole PyCon fiasco.

And her mom's previous attempt to raise $20k for making capes has to make one wonder how much of the cash is going to her pocket. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/susanwilson/the-cape-pro...

Edit: Fact that mom has a debt collection business - maybe it's just me but makes it feel more likely the intentions aren't completely honorable.

jcc80··on Mother raising money through Kickstarter to send daughter to RPG camp
Everyone is focussed a bit too literally on the word "fraud" when it's more about the fact that a 9 yr old did not come up with this: http://i.imgur.com/F03oG3e.png. Which begs the question, how much money is mom going to pocket from this?

The 9 yr old is also not spamming celebs & women's groups on Twitter - http://i.imgur.com/b4l2fI2.png.

jcc80··on Mother raising money through Kickstarter to send daughter to RPG camp
This mom previously tried to raise $20k to make...capes. How much of this $20k+ do you think the 9 yr. old is getting? She's also spamming celebs and women's groups on twitter - http://i.imgur.com/b4l2fI2.png.

I'd be happy to back a child interested in tech but I don't think her daughter made this - http://i.imgur.com/F03oG3e.png.

jcc80··on Mother raising money through Kickstarter to send daughter to RPG camp
Brilliant way to capitalize on recent news by this mom. Smart lady. Her daughter will be thrilled when she finds out enough money was raised for her to attend the camp. As for the rest of the money...
