jbmorgado··on New male contraceptive may be submitted for Indian approval this year
Maybe because the side effects for female contraceptive pill are 99% lower than the ones for the male contraceptive "pill"?

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/10/30/health/male-birth-control/

I mean, one would think that anyone with the minimum sense of logical thinking would understand that it is way easier to prevent 1 (as one, singular) single egg to get fixated in the uterus during the course of 28 days, than to prevent millions (as in > 1000000) of spermatozoids to be produced every single day.

But perhaps it's just me that actually looked at the obvious numbers...

jbmorgado··on I’m Not “Black Enough” for Inc. Magazine
In many places. Ancient Rome for instance.
jbmorgado··on AsciiMath – An easy-to-write markup language for mathematics
To all the commenters pointing out the people that talk about LaTeX, you are getting a part of the criticism wrong. It's not: "Why this when we already have LaTeX?", but a "Why this when LaTeX does it better?".

I wouldn't mind for an easier way to introduce mathematics, but just from the example given, I can see right away that the typography in AsciiMath is not good.

Just look at the space (or lack of it) around the inner parenthesis for instance.

jbmorgado··on Why Capitalism Creates Pointless Jobs
"then that position is absolutely necessary as I'm trying to maximize profits"

Yes, that's the all point of the article and also the one I explaining: Capitalism is about "maximizing profits" not about social, intelectual, or even productive efficiency.

jbmorgado··on Why Capitalism Creates Pointless Jobs
Yes, let now try and mix basic food needs like planting potatoes with you getting the munches at 3 AM and asking for a pizza delivery just because you know there is a service like that available. Whatever wins you the argument in your head, right?
jbmorgado··on Why Capitalism Creates Pointless Jobs
That's the exact point of the all article that you seem to miss: just because there is a market for it, it doesn't meen there is an actual need for it.

Hence the motto of the article: capitalism creates unnecessary jobs.

jbmorgado··on Why Don't Computer Scientists Learn Math? (2016)
It's not about the math, it's about the notation. Mathematic notation is archaic in many ways. We keep using notation that is millennia old in some cases and centuries old in almost any other case.

To make things more difficult, any mathematician opposes vehemently to any change in notation or to use easier notation to pass the same concept.

jbmorgado··on VS Code uses 13% CPU when idle due to blinking cursor rendering
Yes, that was the point I was making. This is something computationally trivial as long as the code is written appropriately.
jbmorgado··on VS Code uses 13% CPU when idle due to blinking cursor rendering
Pretty sure any sane software implementation of a simple seconds pointer would easily update faster than 1 Hz while using little to negligible CPU time in a Desktop processor from the 90's and onwards.
jbmorgado··on VS Code uses 13% CPU when idle due to blinking cursor rendering
Well, you can write plugins in Python for Sublime Text and NeoVim (and more). JS and Python and both fairly uncomplicated languages when it comes to "plebeian hackability/debuggability".
jbmorgado··on Most Electronics Being Banned on Certain US-Bound Flights
Exactly how is the guy "mansplaining"? Seems like the term is now being used to every interaction between a men and a women if the men just doesn't accept absolutely everything the women tells him to do - no matter how idiotic - without arguing in is own favour.
jbmorgado··on House OKs Bill Allowing 'Mentally Incapacitated' Veterans to Buy Guns
Yes. This law would make some sense a century and a half ago. But is anyone actually delusional enough to think that a population armed with some fireguns is able to presently abolish a state that has a major military force armed with jet fighters, tanks, rocket launchers and nuclear weapons?
jbmorgado··on The Fictiv Open-Source Motorcycle
I'm pretty sure road safety laws don't allow you to use this in European Union.
jbmorgado··on Is Turkey Still a Democracy?
No, but it would certainly be a major upgrade to what Turkey has at the moment.
jbmorgado··on Is Turkey Still a Democracy?
Atatürk fought all his life for democracy, respect for state institutions and for secularity. He was the exact opposite of Erdogan.
jbmorgado··on Isaac Asimov Laments the “Cult of Ignorance” in the United States (2016)
> "Why won't the Right in America criticize Radical Evangelical Terror"

Because that doesn't actually exist and it's just a faux and very poor argument.

If you are intellectually honest you would understand there is a big diference between someone from a certain group (may it be christian, muslim, etc) just committing a crime as an individual and someone from a certain group committing a crime invoking principles that derive from belonging to that group (like their religious supremacy for instance).

In that regard, yes, there are a lot more islamic attacks than there are christian attacks. We had one single attack in Europe that could (emphasis on could since the guy was by foremost an extreme right winger and not some christian fanatic) be connected to christian ideologies in the past decades (by Anders Behring Breivik, which did in fact kill a lot of innocent people)... but now go and check how many terrorist attacks you have connected to islamic ideologies.

jbmorgado··on SEC Rejects Rule Change for Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund [pdf]
It's easy. If your product practical application was actually more important than it's speculation aspect then price manipulation would be greatly reduced.

As bitcoin exists right now that's not the case of course. Bitcoin is now a mostly speculative asset since the amount of transactions you can do is extremely small compared to the market value of bitcoin at the moment.

jbmorgado··on SEC Rejects Rule Change for Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund [pdf]
Gold actually has practical applications. Just go to wikipedia and find out what part of the CPU of the computer you are using to write your comment upon is made of.
jbmorgado··on SEC Rejects Rule Change for Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund [pdf]
As usual in the bitcoin universe we are going to get a lot of people trying to explain you why something they were saying it would be so great for bitcoin until 1h ago, is actually a very bad thing for bitcoin and that this was actually the best possible scenario.
jbmorgado··on Fast Radio Bursts from Extragalactic Light Sails
Now-a-days with the social networks, everything seems to be about excitement for some people, but the scientific method survived almost two centuries very well without it, thank you very much.

If you want that kind of excitement, try other area, in here, the only excitement comes from finding an answer to a problem based on science, not in some sci-fi novel.

P.S.: The simple explanation in this case is of course some physical process we can't understand. Not an alien civilization making planet sized machines to power their spaceships. This ain't star wars.

jbmorgado··on Fast Radio Bursts from Extragalactic Light Sails
I'm as Astronomer. I think it's very interesting to read about these kind of scenarios in novels, but I don't think they have a place in a scientific publication.

We are researchers, we try to explain the universe by improving our understanding of the physical processes that lie behind what we observe. The moment we bring aliens or gods into the picture to explain something for which we don't have an answer, we are doing a disservice to science.

jbmorgado··on Climate Impacts of Biking vs. Driving
Most of what you just said would actually reflect pretty badly on vegan diet values and improve paleo diet values.

Vegan diets are the product of intensive agriculture basically anywhere in the world. Paleo, depending on country, can be pretty low intensity, for instance, in Argentina where cattle roams free in the grassland.

While I easily concede that in places like most of the USA - where cattle is a product of intensive livestock exploitation - a paleo diet will produce a lot of CO2 compared to a vegan diet, that is actually not true in places like Argentina, or, to a lesser degree, in places like southern Europe.

jbmorgado··on Installing Ubuntu Personal 16.04 on Aquaris M10 tablet [video]
Other than the "hacking" part (which is very cool and a good show of how far Linux went in terms of compatibility IMO) is there any interest in this?

I mean, in installing a base system that is just not optimised both in processing power and in interface in a tablet?

I've installed Ubuntu in my parents laptop (some Core 2 Duo with 3GB RAM) and it runs really slowly. I guess in the tablet it will be even a bit slower, so I can't see anyone actually using this other than a gimmick.

jbmorgado··on AMD Zen and Ryzen 7 Review: A Deep Dive
Isn't the problem with AMD mobos that it's very difficult to find a motherboard manufacturer that supports the ECC?

From what I've been reading about the upcoming Ryzen, no motherboard so far claims to support ECC.

Does this mean we can now build a full React Native app using only Kotlin?
jbmorgado··on SpaceX to Send Privately Crewed Dragon Spacecraft Beyond the Moon Next Year
Well in a way these are fantastic news. But on the other side they are totally reckless news.

What if the Sun has a SEP event during that period? Everyone on board will die in the period from hours to days from exposure to radiation.

We presently have absolutely no knowledge on how to predict that this will happen or to protect a ship in case it happens.

The Moon missions where done before we knew of the existence of SEPs and fortunately we were lucky... but we are not supposed to just rely on luck now that we know they exist.

jbmorgado··on AMD’s $499 Ryzen 7 1800X Beats $1700 i7 6950X with 1-Click OC on Air Cooling
Anyone knows where can I get detailed information about the processor? I tried to search in AMD page but the information is very scant.

Namely do these processors support ECC and what virtualisation capabilities do they have (for KVM with full GPU access).

jbmorgado··on Video Pros Moving from Mac to Windows for High-End GPUs
History proves again and again, that yes, big companies - even when they are presently turning record profit - can be indeed stupid. Very, very stupid.

Thinking that just because a tech company is big and therefore has the brightest minds there running the products and as such they can't go wrong and it's us, the users, that just don't understand their fantastic strategies is, as we can clearly see from the past, just not true.

Just look at Microsoft in the 2000's for instance. Or at Yahoo in the end of the 90's.

jbmorgado··on How did Europe become the richest part of the world?
True, Switzerland is a great (and beautiful) place to live. But I think the OP was talking about civilization advances and of those Switzerland has much less than Italy.

In fact the same goes for WWII. True, it was a bloody, devastating and awful conflict that brought out the worst in mankind... but at the same time created the tools that put the 1st humans in the Moon and gave us atomic power.

The unfortunate truth is that many of the major technological advances of mankind are closely connected to war.

jbmorgado··on Trust: the inside story of the rise and fall of Ethereum
No, that's not like that at all. In the examples you made, you are giving people MORE rights from THAT point onwards.

In the ETH case, you are creating a law to REVERT a previous deal. Democracies don't do that.
