jasoncchild··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?
A suite of internal autocad automation tools for an electronics manufacturer.
jasoncchild··on Using Rust for 'Scripting'
This...felt misleading.
jasoncchild··on Silicon Valley frets over foreign worker crackdown
I'm confused, how is a company who hires H1-B visa holders "illegitimate"? Maybe I'm taking this too literally...
jasoncchild··on Beware, iPhone Users: Fake Retail Apps Are Surging Before Holidays
My point is these apps exist already, in the App Store...
jasoncchild··on How to pick startup ideas (2015)
I've met a couple of founders who started by searching various "segments" of the "on demand" economy and looking for a niche with little existing (highly visible) competing startups. Seriously these folks had zero experience in the industry and the solution they crafted was certainly not based on some personal experience. In one case they have been pretty successful :)

To be fair, I do feel like there is a certain population disingenuous founders who weave a backstory around the genesis of their startup...but the population, by my estimation is small.

Tech talent is everywhere, not just the "hubs". IMO it's the networking that is harder outside that environment; the hubs have a nexus of finance, talent and buzz.
jasoncchild··on Beware, iPhone Users: Fake Retail Apps Are Surging Before Holidays
Thought they existed in the App Store. Either way, I'm still perplexed at what "real problems" would be solved.
jasoncchild··on The Oppressive Gospel of ‘Minimalism’
Minimalism via choice vs via circumstance :)
jasoncchild··on An Update to Our Supercharging Program
I wonder because hacker news has a very diverse readership
jasoncchild··on An Update to Our Supercharging Program
I wonder how many commentators have experience building charging stations?
jasoncchild··on Beware, iPhone Users: Fake Retail Apps Are Surging Before Holidays
Please, how much legit productivity software comes bundled with "a bit of nudity"
jasoncchild··on Turning off syntax highlighting
>Slightly meta: Turning off the syntax highlighting entirely seems a bit hardcore to me, however, I always read each commit I do via git diff / pull request view, which does not have syntax highlighting (other than red/green for removals/additions), and I always strive to make the diff look good for each commit (which means, doing one thing at a time in each commit)

...alas, some projects require 1 commit per pr, max...

...then again, if you do a 1:1 commit:change as default the rebase msg is much easier to structure :)

jasoncchild··on 22 years in, Magic: The Gathering is the brainiest it’s ever been (2015)
Wow, it really has been over 20 years! I caught the bug at the tail end of the beta run. I am not a fan of board games...but damn do I love me some MtG!
jasoncchild··on Switching from macOS: Developer Environment
i was reading this and wondering why there would be so much emphasis on stuff like apt...then realized that there are indeed developers who've only ever used OS X (and perhaps windows). i guess i assumed everyone ended up with Linux as a daily driver at some point, if even for a short time
jasoncchild··on Introducing TJSON, a stricter, typed form of JSON
Does a time zone key trigger the enforcement a specific ISO standard format for the value?
jasoncchild··on Stealth Cell Tower Disguised as Printer
It is. It's being shutdown. I believe all/most carriers are doing so, which is problematic for lots of cheap iot solutions.

jasoncchild··on Elementary OS
I've used elementary before, never encountered any major issues and quite enjoyed the UX clone factor ;)
jasoncchild··on Sonder E-Ink Keyboard
Even with cad you tend to memorize, that and it doesn't (my exp is limited to autocad) use off hand chording too often. mostly its keying in short commands, such as 'li' or 'c', followed by an 'enter' action key (often space bar)

Perhaps it could be more useful for apps without a cli, like a DAW software package?

jasoncchild··on Giteveryday – A useful minimum set of commands for Everyday Git
Same here; I was constrained to what was on my stack of floppies comprising my Slackware dist
jasoncchild··on Apple Sucks Now, Here’s a ThinkPad Buyer’s Guide
This is true, and an obvious business decision. I assume if they offered more options (CPU, ram, etc) consumers would certainly buy them. I also assume that each permutation of the product will compound the logistics around manufacturing, marketing and so on.
jasoncchild··on Using Rowhammer bitflips to root Android phones
>It's clever because you aren't a memory design or test engineer. This type of problem has been known and tested for since shortly after DRAM was invented

...yeah...sometimes it happens that you are ignorant of the details of a topic...and learning more about it can feel magical...

jasoncchild··on Overview of JavaScript ES6 features
FWIW Immutable.js is not deeply immutable. Seamless-immutable however is.
jasoncchild··on Using Rowhammer bitflips to root Android phones
I first read bout this a few months ago. Coming from a hardware background I was particularly struck by how damned clever this is!
jasoncchild··on Twenty years later I wrote a Tetris again
Fantastic! I had a similar experience in the mid 90s, though I wrote a Zork clone :)
jasoncchild··on How we built a Smart Office system based on Raspberry Pi
Yeah normally open relays with standard switches wired in parallel.
jasoncchild··on How we built a Smart Office system based on Raspberry Pi
Yeah, even stuff like Niagra is a pain. Most solutions are configurable more so than programmable (in the scripting sense). I've done a fair amount of modbus and bacnet with "standard" systems and more pi-style systems and agree that for a developer-minded user it can be like gazing into the mouth of madness to work with.
jasoncchild··on How we built a Smart Office system based on Raspberry Pi
I'm surprised all they found were PLC based solutions. I worked in lighting and building controls for years and most products used embedded systems and not PLCs.
jasoncchild··on Going Serverless: Migrating an Express App to AWS API Gateway and AWS Lambda
Ah, I see. Perhaps that would be a reason to keep an ec2 instance spun up to host the functionality that must always have latency < warmup+runtime? Surely suboptimal. This makes me consider running a cron job to poke timing critical lambda workflows every few minutes...which to me imply writing my functions in such away as to expect this "heartbeat" and act accordingly...and that just feels plain icky...
jasoncchild··on Programming books you might want to consider reading
Read through peopleware recently; I was surprised to see it on this list, mainly because it felt targeted more at low-mid level software engineering managers than "devs".

Nice list that I'll certainly pick a title or two from to add to my queue.

jasoncchild··on Going Serverless: Migrating an Express App to AWS API Gateway and AWS Lambda
If you are serving high traffic then what's the problem?

If your product has only occasional use then you trade cost for latency; spin up an ec2 instance if your request times exceed a few minutes call
