jankotek··on This rare AMD chip is the cheapest 16 core CPU
I used to have 24 core Proliant server 7 years ago. This CPU did not had any powersaving features whatsoever (frequency scaling, turbo, core switching off etc). It was great for testing code performance for its predictable performance.

jankotek··on Large areas of London to be made car-free as lockdown eased
> It will take a monumental effort from all Londoners to maintain safe social distancing on public transport

This is why we need work from home. Banning cars and forcing public transport is not going to fix the problem!

jankotek··on The Cost of Free Doughnuts: 70 Years of Regret
Army asked for it, anyway politics are irrelevant to feelings.

Pay was $50 a month, doughnut was 2 cents, that is like 1% paycut.

jankotek··on The Cost of Free Doughnuts: 70 Years of Regret
>The problem isn't the price

Price was absolutely the problem. Soldiers were paid about $600 year. Not much for a job where you risk your life and dont have much of personal freedom or comfort.

Free food was part of benefits. Charging soldiers for it seems ludicrous, they can not just leave, and go to nearest cafe.

jankotek··on An ARM-based MacBook SE could destroy Chromebooks and mid-priced Windows laptops
I guess this reasoning makes a sense in apple ecosystem. But why not both options in single device?

My 7 years old dell can replace desktop workstation and tablet. Its replacement better have the same features.

jankotek··on An ARM-based MacBook SE could destroy Chromebooks and mid-priced Windows laptops
Macbooks dont even have a touchscreen.

edit: why downvotes? machines like that are also replacement for a tablet.

jankotek··on Building a PC, Part IX: Downsizing
It is much easier to find spare parts. PC can last 10 years, and it may be difficult to find some obscure motherboard or power supply.

Airflow is bad in small cases. And it is harder to build it for newbie correctly.

Bigger cases are usually quieter (fans are bigger and spin less).

I would recommend MicroATX format and case. Still fairly small but without any compromises.

jankotek··on Apple changes default MacBook charging behavior to improve battery health
I would understand if $400 laptop had low power charger to cut price. But on $3k "pro" laptop it is just middle finger to customer.
jankotek··on Make Linux Fast Again (2019)
Only partly

> Based on external and internal analysis, AMD believes it is not vulnerable to the SWAPGS variant attacks because AMD products are designed not to speculate on the new GS value following a speculative SWAPGS. For the attack that is not a SWAPGS variant, the mitigation is to implement our existing recommendations for Spectre variant 1.

jankotek··on Make Linux Fast Again (2019)
Serious question: In old Sandy Bridge days it was recommended to disable hyperthreading. That would decrease heat produced by CPU and allow better overclocking (2600k versus 2500k debate).

Are there some features in CPU (such as hyperthreading), I can disable, so I can run system without those workarounds? I think faster Linux kernel could offset slightly lower CPU performance. Also there is lower energy consumption on laptop...

Or use AMD....

Some notes

- COVID-19 is name of the disease caused by virus SARS-CoV-2. You always get sick with COVID-19

- I would not rely on data from China. I think only future will show how those are misreported even today.

- Germany and some other countries are planning to do random drag-net testing, to find true infection rate in population. Results will be in a week.

- Some countries (Korea, Germany) already tested wide population.

- Death rate varies by several factors. Population age, lung diseases (air pollution...), TB vaccination... It is impossible to make any conclusions.

jankotek··on Minimalism conceals the messy realities of society
Imagine large old shed with some rusting car wrecks around. I think that is minimalists nightmare, but reality of self reliant utilitarian guy.

You accumulate stuff carelessly because storage cost is zero. Even old junk can be source of aluminium block for machining, steel bar for welding or copper coil for wires.

jankotek··on Please Fund More Science
Science has enough money, but is it not efficiently used. Actual researchers are post docs on minimal salary. Most money gets redirected to HR, administrators, ISO compliance etc...

jankotek··on London’s rental market is being flooded by bargain Airbnb listings
City hall is 100% responsible for housing shortage. High rise build would fix low supply problem pretty quickly (see Tokio).

How many apartments are on Airbnb? 10%? And probably only in centre.

And some people like me actually stay in airbnbs long term. It is easy to negotiate reasonable price outside of tourist season. Normal landlord is way too expensive and does not bother with basic maintenance.

It is xenophobia, because many cities are blaming their problems on 'tourists'. But those are often foreign workers and students.

jankotek··on London’s rental market is being flooded by bargain Airbnb listings
I was a resident, I payed taxes and everything. This local versus tourists stuff is just xenopfobia.

Why you don't blame city hall that refuses to build new housing, and d milks tourism for everything at expenses of locals?

jankotek··on London’s rental market is being flooded by bargain Airbnb listings
Last time a was in London on six month contract, Airbnb was more affordable option. Normal landlord wanted an arm and leg.
jankotek··on London’s rental market is being flooded by bargain Airbnb listings
I see something similar in Prague. Many new furnished (unusual) apartments in center for long term rent.

But I think Airbnb is just a scapegoat for broken market. You can see similar problems in commercial rental market.

jankotek··on Mystery in Wuhan: recovered coronavirus patients test negative then positive
Czechia got some quick tests from China. Their reliability was about 60% compared to lab, false positives and false negatives.

I think DNA and RNA research is severely lacking in most countries. In a few years we will look at this year as 1960ies of computer engineering.

jankotek··on What is the unique value proposition of selling honey?
Honeybees are delicate creatures. If bee hive is not treated well, it gets sick, decreases honey production and maybe does not survive winter. Mark in this story would probably went bankrupt in a few years.
jankotek··on Sun's NeWS was a mistake, as are all toolkit-in-server windowing systems (2013)
> its incredible longevity

I get your point, but see it completely differently as GUI programmer. X was steaming pile of s*t. Its "longlevity" was spend cleaning up the mess.

Designers had this stupid idea to do drawing over remote connection, and produced broken design around that. Direct memory access, DRI, OpenGL, screen buffers... Non of that was part of X, but is vitally necessary for GUI.

There is no compatibility in X server design. Good luck running remote X session today. Everyone uses VNC.

jankotek··on Tokyo Olympics “looking at a cancellation” if coronavirus not contained
That is just power fantasy. Do you have any evidence that shooting people for breaking quarantine has effect? I think it just causes people to avoid doctors if they experience symptoms. People do not want to "disappear" into quarantine. I lived under authoritative government and know how it works.

Initial situation was made much worse because China policed their doctors.

Also I do not think that China actually shoots people. It shutdown transport and pumps money into economy. Other states could do that as well.

jankotek··on Tokyo Olympics “looking at a cancellation” if coronavirus not contained
Could you tell me in what way authoritatian countries (aka China) handles this situation better?

Italy closed 50k people into quarantine, government talks about military and EU was deciding about closing borders. All of this days after confirmed cases. I am sure officials would have no trouble to isolate major city.

China has many internal problems, we just do not see them. Government refuses foreign doctors. If crisis continues long enough it may cause civil unrest. China also depends on foreign imports even for food.

I think US is best positioned to handle this well.

jankotek··on Alan Turing in America
> By the end of the war, it appears that Turing’s view of America and Americans had sufficiently soured to where he refused to return ever again

I read somewhere opposite, I do not remember source.

At that time he was forced to take strong medication and had his security clearance removed. He could only continue his work at US, but he was not allowed to immigrate due to criminal charges.
