jamroom··on Preparing Our Partners for iOS 14
Yeah but that only blocks browser based ads - what Apple is doing here is blocking trackers at the OS level - this is what FB is complaining about since their SDK allows the device to be tracked - not just browsers.

jamroom··on LinkedIn to cut 960 jobs worldwide
I'm almost 50 and have been doing my "own thing" full time since 2004. I'm not rich, but have been able to be home while my 3 daughters have grown up. I spent 18 months traveling around the country with my wife and kids (we homeschool). I've been lucky enough to work on the things I want to work on, for the most part when I want to work on them. I have had years where my income has been under $12k and years where I've made over $300k - it's been an absolute roller coaster ride. No doubt if I had stayed employed by 401k would certainly be bigger, but the "cost" to me has been 100% worth it.

One thing that really made the decision easier for me when I left my job to do my own thing was that I could have been in many different situations around the world where I would not have even HAD the opportunity to do my own thing - and by NOT doing it I felt it was disrespectful to all those who would take the chance if given the opportunity to be in my place.

jamroom··on US Secret Service: “Massive Fraud” Against State Unemployment Insurance Programs
The problem is that if the ID is not free, it could constitute a Poll Tax:

Which is against the constitution. It also disenfranchises voters who do not have a permanent address.

jamroom··on Data Shows Shelter-in-Place Is Ending, Whether Governments Want It to or Not
I’m not sure I would call 65,000+ dead from coronavirus “waiting for something to happen”.
jamroom··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
Our society includes people who are over 50 - how do ensure that YOU do not transmit coronavirus to them if you are under 50 and asymptomatic? I know a lot of people are pretty upset but it's not just about YOU. It's about everyone you come in contact with.

jamroom··on Simple-twitter: A bare-bones Twitter clone implemented in a single file
I'm not an PG user but there does not appear to be an index on tweet.time - and even if there was wouldn't it better to do ORDER BY tweet.id DESC? I assume ordering by primary key is going to be the fastest, and would (ideally) prevent maintaining an index on tweet.time.
jamroom··on Apple’s iPhone Software Shakeup After Buggy iOS 13 Debut
Apple needs another "Snow Leopard" release - spend an entire year not adding anything - just focus on making everything work better, fix bugs, etc.

For me it is 25 years of vi muscle memory.
jamroom··on Disney+ hit by technical glitches on launch day
Hulu on my Apple TV is excellent - I find the interface to be much less "noisy" than Netflix and I like the large back catalog on a lot shows. Honestly I subscribed for one show (forget what it was now) but found I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
jamroom··on Union Types have been accepted for PHP 8
I don’t believe there are maps in PHP - just plain arrays which to be honest are pretty simple to use. Unlike say JavaScript where arrays are always numerically indexed, PHP can use any value as an index.
jamroom··on Intel slashes prices in face of AMD competition

jamroom··on Firefox has lots of room to improve if it wants to beat Chrome
Yep this is the ONE thing that kills FF for me. I use an external 4K display (via Display Port) on a 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro and Firefox basically just spins the fans up nonstop while it is running.

What is "Berkeley's data quality process"? I've not heard of that. Thanks!
jamroom··on Airlines are finally fixing the middle seat
Southwest Airlines early check in is $35 at ticket purchase time or $40 at the gate. When flying with my family that’s an extra $200. I like southwest but this is one thing I really dislike about them.
jamroom··on Ask HN: Why is HN so aggressively anti-Bitcoin?
To be honest I'm not focused on the price - I too have held bitcoin for a long time. This was just my observation having been on HN for a very long time - it just seems the negativity around BC really spiked up in early 2018. As much as we like to think about the tech behind crypto, many users simply look at it as an investment and were pretty depressed when they didn't cash at the 20K high and were hoping for it to go even higher.
jamroom··on Ask HN: Why is HN so aggressively anti-Bitcoin?
I think a lot of HN users like to think of themselves as early adopters of new technology and are disappointed for missing out on the crypto highs at the end of 2017. I think they feel if they could have been in the loop at that time they could have cashed out. Thus crypto discussions are going to have a lot of negativity in the comments since the best way to make yourself feel better about it is to pretend it was a scam all along and you really didn't miss out. My 2 cents of course :)
jamroom··on Elizabeth Warren Proposes Breaking Up Tech Giants Like Amazon
I agree 100% and have long felt this is the right approach. Basically the bigger you get, the harder it gets to keep getting bigger.
jamroom··on Insulin Wars: How insurance companies farm out dirty work to doctors patients
We have most of that in a union. You can literally trace the decline of middle class income to the decline of union membership - i.e.:

jamroom··on Insulin Wars: How insurance companies farm out dirty work to doctors patients
Right now there's likely to be 100 different prices for almost any medicine or procedure - it depends on who's paying. I think one of the frustrating aspects is that if you are uninsured, you are likely to pay the HIGHEST rate - even though you are likely to be the least able to afford it.

I agree that on non-generic drugs that the price would likely remain high - however if everyone paid the same rate (low or high) then it would at least discourage some of the type of pricing we see now where a procedure is provided below cost to a specific group of users to make sure those members (i.e. customers of specific insurance companies) are able to be kept "in network", while charging much, much higher rates to others to make up the difference.

jamroom··on Insulin Wars: How insurance companies farm out dirty work to doctors patients
I agree 100%. The approach I like is what I call "lowest negotiated price". How it would work is that buyers (i.e. insurance companies) could still negotiate for a lower cost, but whatever that cost ends up being is the cost _everyone_ pays. This allows buyers to continue to try to get a better price if they can, while likely making sure the price that is agreed upon is fair to all.

jamroom··on Users complain that Apple is 'nickel and diming' them
This is just inflation. In 2003 when the G4 iBook was unveiled, the cheapest model started at $1099:

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2003/10/22Apple-Unveils-New-G...

In 2018 dollars (adjusted for inflation) that is ~$1507.00. You can get a mid-level Macbook Pro for that now.

jamroom··on Motorola and iFixit partner to sell phone repair kits
I buy mostly Apple specifically because I find the build quality ensures they last the longest. I'm still using a 2009 Macbook on a daily basis, and my youngest daughter is using my original iPhone 4.
jamroom··on Disable SMT/Hyperthreading in all Intel BIOSes
I'm not sure if you are running OSX on a multi user server, but is this something we need to worry about on our laptop? It's not clear to me what needs to be done in a single user situation.
jamroom··on Microsoft Bug Testers Unionized, Then They Were Dismissed
Not sure why you're getting down voted - tying health care to employment is a burden on both companies (at least small ones) and workers.
jamroom··on Companies Shouldn’t Be Accountable Only to Shareholders
Being median income I have a feeling that the US median is "pulled up" significantly by the top .01% of earners in the US - I have a feeling they account for a far larger amount than the top .01% of German earners.

Also - this does not take into account additional costs such as healthcare that will pull down the US amount.
