Looks like it really started under Teddy Roosevelt. Obama's 276 is lower than most of his predecessors.

Yep - I ran a 16 line Major BBS back in the mid 90's in Seattle - used what was called a "Bocaboard" - had 16 serial ports on it - plugged in 16 external USR 28.8 modems. It all ran off of one PC.

We didn’t go in to Irag because Saddam was a mass murderer - we went in because Bush lied to America that Saddam was trying to get yellow cake uranium to build a bomb. A lot of Americans were against the war because we knew Saddam was not involved in 9/11 but Bush jr wanted to finish what his father couldn’t in the first gulf war. Honestly I would love it if we cared enough about mass murderers to actually go in and help, but I just don’t see that being a reason.

My experience with people who "don't like the taste of coffee" usually has been that they don't like how bitter and strong the taste is, which is almost always tasting the "roast" instead of the bean. Single origin light roast is the way to go if you want a really good non-coffee tasting cup of coffee. My recommendation is central america single origin (Guatamala, Costa Rica, etc) - the beans from this region tend to lean towards caramel / chocolate / hazelnut tastes which goes a long way in getting non-coffee lovers to like a cup of coffee.

The article doesn't appear to say that OpenAI is a monopolist - it's more a conflict of interest:

However, YC is also closely tied to OpenAI, which is now directly competing against Google on search. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman used to run YC, while OpenAI was the first group affiliated with YC Research.

Quick question - is it possible to import multiple files at once? I frequently get ZIP files full of csv/xlsx files that I need to search through. I didn't see a way to import more than 1 file at a time. Thanks!

I've tried most archiving/bookmarking self hosted solutions I could find and the one I like the best is:

Over 200,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in Katrina:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reconstruction_of_New_Orleans

Not sure how that is a "tiny fraction" of homes. $125 billion in damage (2005).

I had not seen this claim before, but upon checking it out it appears to be true:

I'm guessing that is what they are talking about.

us-east-2 seeing tons of S3 errors.

Not sure what they use but I've used Speedtest CLI:

https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli

works good.

Honestly based on the photos this looks like they are hoarders.

Do you have a link to one that shows A/C? I'm only seeing C/C (I'm A/C so curious). Thanks!

I don't know how accurate this list is, but it sure seems like most of the high crime cities in the US are NOT in the west:

I suspect the majority of mac owners still have intel based macs so they want to highlight the performance improvement to those users - since they may be most likely to upgrade?

Yeah this is what you do - "restart in offline mode". I have my kids do this and we can all play whenever.

Gitea works really well for this - just choose "new migration" and set the remote up as a mirror - super easy.

Yeah I can't access our services on us-east-2 on AT&T 5G but CAN on my CenturyLink fiber.

We're still up on us-east-2 but lots of customers calling in that they can't connect - makes me think there's some network down somewhere.

Yeah but what about the resources that go into making a phone? The phone is just the end result of a long line of processes that create waste. So while the phone may be much smaller in size, "throwing it away" could result in a larger impact to the environment than it may seem.

I was a produce manager at Safeway in the 1980's. Both Red delicious AND Golden delicious were great eating apples. Not sure much anymore and I'm not sure why.

Does anyone know if Planetscale plans on deploying in us-east-2? I'd love to play around with it and compare to Aurora V2 but all of our infrastructure is in us-east-2.

I think there is more to this as well - it seems like policing is seen more as a source of revenue for cities than it is about protecting or serving the citizens of the city. I used to live in Lynnwood, WA and they added ~20 new officers in 2015 or so - by far the bulk were on "traffic". They had just spent 25+ million on a new rec center and updated library and needed to get that money from somewhere. Around that time my house was broken in to and the police saw it 100% as an insurance issue. I think A LOT of people don't see local police as anything other than another form of tax on the local citizens, and I believe it has changed the TYPE of person that wants to BECOME a police officer - from someone that is interested in helping their fellow citizen to someone that likes the feeling of power they get over others.

In other words "let's see if we can invalidate as many ballots as we can in a county where we're not happy with who they vote for based on a technicality". I'm willing to bet the majority of these pictures are of people that had no idea of this "requirement".

If you want to make an insurance claim don't insurance companies require a police report? I would assume this is the case regardless where you live.

I'm not an expert in any way on the reasons, but it seems like all large transportation and infrastructure projects in any state have some level of federal involvement.

From the NYT article it looks like the state legislature holds the purse strings on any federal funds that might help:

"the State of Mississippi received $75 million to upgrade drinking water systems across the state, with an additional $429 million coming available over the next five years. But that money is in the hands of the state Legislature, not Jackson officials."

They're not cheap but I can recommend:
