They also ruled that blacks could not claim any of the rights and privileges granted to citizens.
jamesredd··on TikTok is back in the App Store
Good. The law banning TikTok is unconstitutional.
jamesredd··on Huawei developing SSD-tape hybrid amid US tech restrictions
This misses the point. If you gave all of the F-35 IP to India they would still be incapable of developing the indigenous industries required to build a 5th generation fighter in a similar amount of time.
jamesredd··on How cockroaches spread around the globe
You can destroy your indoor plumbing this way.
jamesredd··on Humans now share the web equally with bots
The internet being populated with intelligent bots might be preferable to the internet being populated with less intelligent humans.
jamesredd··on Nine writers on their Adderall use and experiences
Too many ups and downs causes instability. People don't like to admit it but many of the current problems are a consequence of drug use.

"Most people will die after three days without water."

This is false.

jamesredd··on The U.S. Government Will Soon Spend More on Interest Payments Than Defense
The truth is that the US can no longer afford to be the police of the world, and as this recent Houthi situation has shown, lacks the capacity to do so. What's even more worrisome is the nuclear arsenal of the US could fall into the wrong hands in the event of a civil war - with the upcoming presidential election. Disarmament, of conventional and nuclear weapons, should be a long term goal of the US.

jamesredd··on “In 2050, everyone will be carbon literate”
It's called CO2 fertilization and it has already had a positive impact on the amount of green plant matter on the planet.

jamesredd··on The TikTok ban is a betrayal of the open internet
It's not the fault of China that America waged decades of war while its industrial base was decimated by the same people waging those wars.
jamesredd··on Treasury Secretary Yellen says not all uninsured deposits will be protected
All uninsured depositors are equal, but some uninsured depositors are more equal than others.

jamesredd··on How to Be 18 Years Old Again for Only $2M a Year
Sounds like confounding bias. Seven-Day Adventists abstain from cigarettes, a main contributor to early death. Also any diet that avoids the standard American diet will probably increase your lifespan, even veganism, though probably less so now with all of the processed vegan foods. That has no bearing on whether veganism is an optimal diet for human longevity, it just implies that the standard American diet is a poor diet. If you look at countries with the highest meat consumption - Hong Kong and Australia - they also have the longest lifespan.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6654568/ “It is concluded that evidence was found for the thesis that abstinence from cigarette smoking is the main factor explaining the low mortality from ischaemic heart diseases among SDAs”

jamesredd··on How to Be 18 Years Old Again for Only $2M a Year
The vegan part is nonsense.
jamesredd··on China estimates 250M people have caught Covid in 20 days
That study doesn't measure IQ.

"In this respect, the battery of tests should not be considered an IQ test in the classic sense, but instead, is intended to differentiate aspects of cognitive ability on a finer grain. The tests had been optimized for application with older adults and people with mild cognitive and motor impairments."

jamesredd··on Tesla reports two new fatal crashes involving Autopilot or FSD Beta
Because people want to use it, are using it, and there needs to be a force to stop them from using it. If the risks are not absurd, people simply don't care.
jamesredd··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
Propaganda has nothing to do with the government. It has to do with perverting the truth in favor of a narrative.
jamesredd··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
I have nothing against pg, except for the fact that when he said something I found absurd I had to mute him on Twitter. I don’t find propagandist compelling at all and have no interest in reading the outcome of their thoughts.
jamesredd··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
I had Paul Graham muted on Twitter. I can’t recall what he said, but it was absurd, and he won’t be missed.
jamesredd··on New Zealand bans young people from buying cigarettes for life
Politicians can decide to pass any laws they want. The ability of the state to enforce those laws is a different matter. Nothing inherent about democracy prevents it from being as restrictive on freedom as a dictatorship.
jamesredd··on Ask HN: Should Google be concerned with ChatGPT
Search engines are a nuisance and only an intermediary between your query and the answer. I find myself broadening my scope of questioning while using OpenGTP because those questions were limited by the search engine’s capacity to answer them. Processing irrelevant information is an impediment to the curiosity of learning.
jamesredd··on Hepatotoxicity with High-Dose Green Tea Extract: Effect of COMT and UGT1A4 Genes
Drinking green tea doesn't seem to produce the same hepatoxicity as seen with green tea extract taken in pill form. The problem is the high catechin concentration of the extract and the large acute dose.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29580974/

"Average green tea consumption was reportedly three cups per day among tea drinkers (Hakim et al., 2003; Kaegi, 1998; Khokhar and Magnusdottir, 2002), while in some countries it could be as high as ten cups per day (Muramatsu, 1991)"

"Our review supports that consumption of GTE or EGCG in bolus dose, but not green tea consumed as a beverage or part of the diet, is causally associated with hepatotoxicity"

"Evidence from animal studies demonstrated that hepatotoxicity risk rose with increasing concentrations of catechins and EGCG"

"Hepatotoxicity was clearly absent in the animal studies in which GTE or EGCG was administered in the diet or drinking water despite that concentrations of catechins in the test materials were greater than that of a traditional green tea infusion (> 68% w/w)."

jamesredd··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
The cholesterol discussion is highly nuanced. There are alternative theories of the function of lipoproteins in the blood. If you're interested check out Dave Feldman's work around his theory, the Lipid Energy Model. https://cholesterolcode.com/model/
jamesredd··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
Of course red meat is healthy. So is dairy. The demonization of saturated fat has had disastrous health consequences.
jamesredd··on Bankman-Fried and FTX Execs Received $4.1B in Personal Loans from Alameda
This whole story has an odd feeling to it. One has to wonder if a Bankman-Fried, with all of his connections, was the Trojan horse for the public outrage to ban crypto.
