jamespetercook··on Show HN: A living wall of life goals and deathbed regrets
They're random from the entire set. There's only about 90 posts at the time of writing. I did disable a few... somebody was very keen to express their love for genitalia lol
jamespetercook··on Show HN: A living wall of life goals and deathbed regrets
What device do you have? The animations are kind of resource intensive. There are some performance optimisations if the frame rate drops but perhaps it needs to go further
jamespetercook··on Show HN: A living wall of life goals and deathbed regrets
That's a great idea. If it gets no traction, I'll be in touch. If it does, I might still ask you for some help...

If we had access to the same question being asked at different times through history, I bet the answers wouldn't be so different.

jamespetercook··on Ask HN: Why does every website ask me to accept cookies?
There should definitely be a standard API for this stuff by now allowing browsers to control the cookie experience. Maybe we're moving in that direction, I'm not sure. I think there was a feeling the law would be rolled back so there was no major push to standardise things
jamespetercook··on How to focus on one things? I am so distracted, any tips would help
focusatwill.com and a set of headphones has helped me a lot.
jamespetercook··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
Third day in a row this has affected my productivity
jamespetercook··on Deutschlandticket for regional bus and rail services to be offered for €49/month
Are you in the UK by any chance? Sounds just like my old commute before I started working from home, and my partner’s current one
jamespetercook··on Phishing attack underway using namecheap.com infrastructure
I just received two emails from renewals@namecheap.com claiming to be from MetaMask, asking me to complete KYC verification.

My first thought was “I guess MetaMask are trying to monetise”. Took me a minute to realise it wasn’t legit

jamespetercook··on Ask HN: Anyone actually seeing wage increases in tech due to inflation?
When inflation hit 10% in the UK last month my employer brought forward the annual January pay increase. We all got a 5% bump. Last year it was 1%.

Edit: I work in the education sector. Our dev team has 4 people in a company of ~250. It’s not really “tech”

jamespetercook··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
This sounds a lot like how I work too. If I have to open a bunch of tabs it’s usually temporary and I’ll want to get rid of them again at the earliest opportunity.
jamespetercook··on Lexical – a web text editor framework that powers Facebook
Very interested to know if there are any plans to support React Native? I’ve been struggling to find a good library that doesn’t require a web view.
jamespetercook··on Heroku CI and Review App Secrets Compromised
Slightly off-topic, but can anyone tell me how you’d know that your database has been accessed by a threat actor? Should I be periodically reviewing all my logs for something unusual?
jamespetercook··on Adobe tricks users into a 12 month contract
I fell for this too. I wanted InDesign for 1 month to make a decent looking CV when switching jobs. I felt really stupid when I tried to cancel and realised I’d be charged the remaining balance. Adobe lost me as a returning customer.
jamespetercook··on A small guide for naming stuff in front-end code
The BEM naming convention for css works matches this concept quite well
jamespetercook··on Microsoft is ditching Electron for Teams
I keep hoping they’ll use this for teams. The mobile app is so much more performant (not sure if that’s react native?) and RN for desktop works well but needs more features
jamespetercook··on Google adds a guitar tuner to Search
One of the best purchases I ever made was about 8 years ago when I bought the Polytune iOS app for less than £5. It does one thing really well, has never tried to take more of my attention than it should with upgrades or ads, and every time I get a new phone it comes with me.
jamespetercook··on TIL: Press '.' In a GitHub Repo for Magic
I would love it if they enabled this on pull requests. Having the file tree and the ability to jump around files and methods would be really useful
jamespetercook··on Facebook has sold 4M Quest 2 headsets in the US, recall docs reveal
What tech do you use to do this?
jamespetercook··on 100 paying users in 100 days
It’s like a classic old style type but if the press was low on ink. It weirdly gives me a very honest vibe as it reminds me of cheaply printed books.
jamespetercook··on All-new iMac features the M1 chip
I think they’ll remove the chin eventually, but probably need a new (thinner) screen technology first
jamespetercook··on The end for Intel-compatible x86 apps on M1 Macs?
Any clarification of “certain countries”?
jamespetercook··on Why You Should Take Any Vaccine
Great sleuthing, thanks
jamespetercook··on Clubhouse Bio Generator
I've sent you an email to your predict salary address. Thank you :)
jamespetercook··on Clubhouse Bio Generator
Feel bad for asking here, but does anybody have an invite code they wouldn’t mind giving me?

I keep hearing good things about the conversations that are happening, but I’ve been on the wait list for months, and I’m not in the clique

jamespetercook··on Google outage – resolved
A good explainer video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5p8wTOr8AbU
jamespetercook··on Heavy is the Head that wears the AirPods Max
$549 is expensive. £549 is madness
jamespetercook··on Running Docker on Apple Silicon M1 (Follow-Up)
Is this not true for Windows too though?
jamespetercook··on Tesla Tequila
Product not available in the UK and I can’t see any details. How much does one bottle cost?
jamespetercook··on Apple Watch Momentum Is Building
Similar experience here. I have a Series 4, and charge it on an evening when I'm not doing much for about 30/40 mins and it's good for another 24 hours. The new sleep tracking feature asks for 30% battery life before being enabled, and lets you know in advance if you need to charge. Before Apple added that feature to the OS I was using the Pillow app and that would happily blow through 80% of the battery in a night.

Overall the device has been a massive net positive for my health, I really love it.

jamespetercook··on D-Wave announces general availability of first quantum computer for business
Are these companies purchasing D-Wave computers or just renting compute time on them? The latter makes more financial sense to me
