jamesbvaughan··on Reverse-engineering my speakers' API to get reasonable volume control
In this case, I was using the optical out from a WiiM mini into a Yamaha amp. I don't know much about digital audio, but I know that I was able to control the volume of the WiiM's digital output with that setup.

On the other hand, I use a Schiit Asgard at my desk, where I have it connected to my Mac via USB-C. In that setup, I have no control over the volume level going in to the Asgard. MacOS just disables the software volume control when I'm using that audio output.

I do something similar. I primarily use a MacBook these days and I really miss how my ThinkPad could open up to 180 degrees while using it laying down on the couch.
jamesbvaughan··on Can Apple win back music? A proposal for a fan-centric revenue model [video]
I don't know enough about the economics here to know if this plan is viable, and it's a bit light on the details. I'd love to see a website with a more detailed proposal and some example scenarios.

Jack Stratton of Vulfpeck has been vocal about frustration with music streaming services' artist payout models. In this video he proposes a specific alternative.

I'd guess that it's Space Grotesk with those extra bits added manually.

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted. I'm also a happy Lunch Money user and I suspect that other folks in this thread would be interested in it.

I'd like to better understand the intent with that code. What is it trying to achieve that this does not?

I just took a look on my machine and the images are all loading in Firefox. If they're still not loading for you, would you mind sharing more info? Are you just getting 404s?
jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
Yeah, if this were something that I wanted to leave running for more than the duration of a flight, I'd reach for cron, but a bash one-liner was perfect for this use-case!
jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
Considering how delayed that flight was, I'd have loved to be able to PATCH the `dist_remain` field.

I used chart.js [0], but I don't necessarily endorse it - it's just what I knew how to use quickly. I usually try to keep my posts free from javascript, and could have used a different tool that gives me SVG data or images.

You can see the code that's generating these charts here: https://github.com/jamesbvaughan/jamesbvaughan.com/blob/main...

Yep, that's exactly right! They have a nice status page that you can visit free of charge that visualizes this data.

I chose to scrape it for a couple reasons:

1. I wanted see all of the data for the entire flight - that status page only visualizes the current values.

2. It was fun!

jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
No permission - just curiosity :)

I'm not too concerned about the risk associated with fetching a JSON file that their flight status page is already fetching on a loop. That said, I'm curious what risks you have in mind.

jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
That is the flight. This is a cool idea - I wish I had thought of it!
jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
That makes sense.

One reason I think it could be MPH despite that is because some of the other data seems like it's been processed so that it doesn't need to be transformed any further on the client side before using it in the UI, and the UI displays the speed in MPH.

If I were still on the flight, I could just compare the numbers in these payloads to the MPH number in the UI and confirm.

jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
That's cool! I had wanted to make something similar, but I didn't have enough experience with making TUIs to build it without using the internet for reference during the flight. I'm glad to that it's been done though!
jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
All chromium-based browsers have it in the network tab of the dev tools
jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I felt similar!

My best guess is that whoever designed this system preferred to transform the time into a localized (based on the flight's location, I guess?) representation on the server so that they could drop it directly into the web UI without much client-side logic.

jamesbvaughan··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
Good catch! I'm not very familiar with knots - what specifically makes the speeds here look like knots to you?

edit: Updated the article. Thanks!

jamesbvaughan··on Arcol: The collaborative CAD tool for architects
Fair question. We're not quite ready to go into full open beta yet, but we also don't want to keep teasing folks who have been on the waitlist for over a year and are eager to see our progress.

We want to provide high-quality support to our users, but we don't yet have the resources to provide that support _and_ make rapid progress on developing new features. Opening up temporarily like this gives us time to see our current feature set in the hands of interested architects (and hobbyists!), get feedback and direction from them, but then get back to heads-down development after the preview is over.

If you're interested in maintaining access after this preview release is over, feel free to reach out to me at james@arcol.io!

jamesbvaughan··on Linux vs. Mac
The G14 looks pretty good - I hadn't checked it out before.

It's slightly thicker and heavier than the MPB and I'd really like to go lighter rather than heavier if I were to switch. If gaming were a priority for me though, something like this seems like it would be the way to go.

jamesbvaughan··on Linux vs. Mac
Yeah, yabai is the one I've had the most success with and I'm a fan of it! I actually still use it for faster desktop/workspace switching.

I've ended up finding that for me personally though, it feels slightly better to give in to the way macOS wants me to do window management, working with the designers' intent, than it does to work against it with yabai.

jamesbvaughan··on Linux vs. Mac
I switched from a Linux laptop to a Macbook Pro for after about 5 years on Linux. The initial reason was that my last employer required us to use Macbooks.

I now have the option to use whatever computer I'd like and (for now at least) I'm still sticking with the Macbook. The main things that keep me on it are: - Excellent hardware. The build quality is higher than any non-Apple laptop I've tried and the display is really good. - Performance and battery usage with the Apple silicon chip is great. - iCloud sync. I use an iPhone and frequently make use of iMessage, photos, and clipboard syncing between devices. I know that you can replicate a lot of that with Android and Linux, but at this point I'm pretty deep in Apple's ecosystem and am unlikely to switch away anytime soon.

The biggest thing I miss is having a good tiling window manager experience. I have a desktop running Sway[0] and really love it. I've tried a handful of tiling window managers for mac and none of them have felt really good to use. They all feel like I'm fighting the OS more than working with it.

If there were a lightweight laptop with good linux compatibility, a high-dpi, high refresh rate display, and competitive battery life, I'd be very tempted to switch back to linux just to have a good window manager again. I'm hoping that Asahi on the MBP can give me that, but it seems like it's not quite ready for daily driving yet.
