jahabrewer··on In Almost Every European Country, Bikes Are Outselling New Cars
> no one in their right mind would choose the bike lane over the sidewalk

In my head, it's the other way. Why would I deal with pedestrians, a rougher surface, and surprised cars when I can ride a dedicated lane on the road? You just have to do it a bit to get over the initially scary feeling when cars approach from behind and you have to trust they won't hit you.

Gotcha, thanks for the explanation.

I'm not a security guy, but it seems to me that it would also be useful to mask the URL. It's my understanding that a snooper could still see that you accessed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1... , but not the content of the page.

Maybe offer a search on the site that returns links that are generated just for you, so instead of going to the above url, you'd access something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/onetime/45sdf3sd8re2dfa7w7eras... (and throw away the key after the access).

jahabrewer··on Show HN: Stripe for Printing
I'm curious. At what volume of customers/work does this kind of business change from being a guy who reads the requests, opens files, and prints them to being a more automated solution?
jahabrewer··on BeagleBone Black: A 1-GHz computer for $45
I used that Rovio bot in a robotics class. I'm no robotics expert (hardly a novice), but this was my experience.

The big hold-up is lack of access to (or maybe pure lack of) encoders on the wheels (we were using the wifi/web interface). It's impossible to move by dead reckoning. This was actually part of our class, to teach us how bad dead reckoning is and then we moved on to CV for tracking and control.

You're living up to your name.

> I'd really recommend getting a bike

For sure. Work is a mile away by road, but it's only two by trail. I'm really excited about that.

My main worry is that it'll be awful to go anywhere during the winter. Do people there bike through winter?

jahabrewer··on Simplify
> I got rid of my car.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but it got me thinking and I figure there's a large Redmond audience here. I'm moving there soon and I'm struggling with whether to ditch my car or not. I'll be living downtown and work is under a mile away.

Anyone care to comment?

jahabrewer··on The Power Of Silence: Why The SimCity Story Went Away
> But - EA scammed me out of the $60 before...

Chargeback if you can't get a refund (like me, I bought on Origin). I called up Amex, identified the charge, told them EA misrepresented the product, and a day later I had a credit on my statement. Took three minutes.

jahabrewer··on Ember 101: Learn Ember One Video at a Time
It's a good screencast, but I wasn't able to follow along using the ember starter kit I downloaded yesterday (errors). I'm sure the problem was something silly, but I'm not a js whiz like the rest of HN so I got frustrated and quit. Hopefully the glut of ember tutorials on the frontpage today will help.
jahabrewer··on WhatsApp confirms Google isn’t buying it
I'm not familiar with WhatsApp, but from their front page blog article[1], it sounds like they could be at loggerheads with Google over privacy/advertising. You can't buy an ideologue.

> "Disney have used it" is correct here, in British English.

Is it even a matter of US vs. British English? I thought collective nouns could be treated as either singular or plural when conjugating the verb.

jahabrewer··on A new study suggests alcohol is more harmful than heroin or crack
> Where does the societal harm from anabolic steroids come from?

I think the argument for this would be similar to the argument for using models with less atypical body types. If all the guys I saw on TV when I was a kid were super jacked, I'd probably feel more pressure to be that way and possibly use anabolic steroids to get there.

jahabrewer··on Something is burning in the server room; how can I quickly identify what it is?
It's been a while since I've been in IT, but don't failing UPS batteries put off fumes that destroy your lungs?

A friend of a friend was a hero and shutdown his datacenter cleanly/recovered some hard drives during a situation like this. He got severe lung damage (not from fire).

jahabrewer··on Asm.js in Firefox Nightly
Sorry I'm late to the party.

Could someone explain what this is? All I've found in search is talk about how much faster it is. Devs write code in C/C++ and target js? Is that it?

That was my main takeaway from skimming. I'm not a sales person, but I could see ten cents being a significant portion of the profit margin on certain items.
