jaden··on Ask HN: Do you trust your ISP?
No. Use a VPN.

jaden··on The Power of One Push-Up
I was able to get to 20 pushups and I kept increasing by one or two a day. Then when I hit around 35 I pushed myself and keep going until I hit 40. It took a little over a week and a half I think.
jaden··on The state of switching to Windows from Mac in 2019
> I'll be honest: it wasn't an easy switch at first, but as time went by it's become clear it was the right choice.

Let's stop pretending there's a correct OS. We all have different needs and it depends on what you're optimizing for.

I have a Macbook for work and run Windows 7 on my home desktop with Ubuntu on my home laptop. They all have their benefits and drawbacks.

And Windows 10 has been having plenty of problems of its own with recent vulnerabilities and a bug that could break VPN connections.

jaden··on Evernote Blows Up the ‘Fail Fast’ Gospel
A few more options are Notion[0], Dynalist[1], Nuclino[2] and Nimbus Note[3].

I've been using Dynalist, but Nimbus Note looks promising.

jaden··on The Power of One Push-Up
After reading that those who could do at least 40 pushups without stopping [0] had a 96% lower risk of heart disease, I started doing pushups each day until I could do 40. I'm surprised by how much better I feel.

jaden··on One In Five Employees Is Highly Engaged and at Risk of Burnout (2018)
It can be demoralizing to step back and ask yourself if what you do at work provides real value. And when you feel pressure to perform heroics to meet an arbitrary deadline, burnout is a real possibility.

It's important make sure you're not sacrificing your wellbeing for the benefit of the company. Your physical and mental health are far too important.

jaden··on Google CTF 2019
CTF = Capture The Flag

(I didn't know what it stood for at first).

jaden··on Show HN: Never-Blink: Blink and Lose. An Online Web Game
There are two private RSA keys in the repository. That may be intentional, but it's usually not a good idea.

jaden··on FastMail Experiencing a DDoS Attack
Looks like it's back up. Their web site was returning a 502 Bad Gateway for about an hour and the General availability on their status site https://www.fastmailstatus.com/ was "The service is unavailable".
jaden··on Ask HN: How to come up with sideproject ideas?
https://requestforstartup.co/ has some ideas that are too big for a side project, but there are smaller ones there.

Also, here's Ryan Hoover's (creator of ProductHunt) response to your question - https://blog.producthunt.com/how-to-come-up-with-side-projec...

jaden··on I've been building a Markdown note-taking app for 3 years
Haroopad http://pad.haroopress.com also does this.
jaden··on I've been building a Markdown note-taking app for 3 years
Thanks for sharing, I hadn't heard of https://typora.io before. The extremely minimalist web site on mobile made it seem like the page hadn't loaded.

Subscriptions are the best way to support products with a smaller user base. Plus it has ongoing cloud storage.

jaden··on I've been building a Markdown note-taking app for 3 years
https://happenapps.com in case anyone else, like me, wanted to check it out. It's Mac only.
jaden··on Arc.io – A Crowdfunded Distributed CDN
That's true, but a Hetzner server is only in a single datacenter. A closer comparison might be a CDN service like Cloudflare for free, or https://bunnycdn.com/pricing for about $0.01/GB. Both distribute your assets across the globe for reduced latency.
jaden··on Ask HN: Do I still need a dot com domain?
> I wouldn't use .us in the USA though—it doesn't seem to be very common, putting it in the same boat as .biz and all the other new ones. .com seems to be the de facto "US" TLD.

Also know that .us doesn't allow whois privacy. It made for an unpleasant surprise when I started getting loads of spam to my whois email address.

jaden··on A class-action suit imperils California freelancers

jaden··on How Plaid Reconciles Pending and Posted Transactions
That's a good (although bad for the consumer) point. Are you aware of any examples of this happening?
jaden··on An outlining app similar to Workflowy
> Also... no mobile app :/

They have mobile apps for iOS and Android https://dynalist.io/download

jaden··on "DigitalOcean Killed Our Company"
> Once you get set-up as a business, most providers assume you know what you are doing.

Is there any evidence for this? For all we know his DO account was set up as a business.

jaden··on The Collapsing Crime Rates of the ’90s Might Have Been Driven by Cellphones
Exactly. A motivated individual could find dozens of supposed causes of reduced crime in the 90s.

Exhibit A - Murders by sharp object correlates with visitors to SeaWorld - http://tylervigen.com/view_correlation?id=41291

jaden··on How Plaid Reconciles Pending and Posted Transactions
It's encouraging to see Plaid making this level of effort to be accurate. It seems like it could be a viable alternative to Mint using something like https://github.com/yyx990803/build-your-own-mint (written by the author of Vue.js).

It's scary to think what would happen if one of these services (Mint, Personal Capital, Plaid) had a backend data breach. If they can log in to your financial sites, a breach would mean the attacker would be able to as well.

jaden··on Information Security Mental Models
The Cyber Defense Matrix slides [0] linked to in a comment on the site provided some interesting use cases.

jaden··on Updated Dropbox plans get more storage and improved capabilities
Agreed. I have 32 GB for free after maxing out referrals and all of their DropQuests but would jump on a $2-$5/month plan with less storage. 2 TB is overkill for what I need.
jaden··on Updated Dropbox plans get more storage and improved capabilities
Full-text search available for free with Google Drive. It's surprising that it's available on the more expensive Dropbox plans yet still "coming soon" on the Plus plan.
jaden··on 14,000-year-old footprints record an underground Stone Age family outing
> Most likely they were pushed into the cave by simple curiosity and a sense of wonder for unexplored places

It's so fascinating to envision what this family was doing, and to consider what future generations may find from our random explorations.

jaden··on Outschooling
Homeschooling seems like an ideal solution for those with a parent at home to improve their children's academic learning. But it's concerning that those actively involved parents are removed from the public school system.

jaden··on You don’t want a child prodigy
> Athletes who go on to become elite usually have a “sampling period.” They try a variety of sports, gain a breadth of general skills, learn about their own abilities and proclivities, and delay specializing until later than their peers who plateau at lower levels.

There's so much for kids to experience as they grow up, it's a shame when a child is made to specialize in a single endeavor before they've had a chance to try other activities.

jaden··on The Ecological Limits of Work [pdf]
As a kid, one of the biggest benefits of technology I heard was freeing up our time from mundane labor. But with our phones making us available almost 24/7 it seems the joke is on us.

A three hour work day is something I could get behind 100%.
