jacksonkmarley··on Ask HN: Tips to relearn how to care about my job?
It is probably pretty dependent on your particular work situation, but if you have some freedom in your daily tasks, you could try inserting more interesting small things in amongst the grind.

For example in my job (quite dull) I automated some data collection, stored the data in a database, created a web app to present data from the database, ran it all on a server etc. None of it was anything my boss would have given me as an explicit task, but it was useful stuff that I could make a case for. It was also stuff I hadn't done before and was interested in learning how to do.

Granted, the weight of crappy project management decisions eventually became too much for me to put up with, but for a while I quite liked going in to work and setting up my mini-projects.

jacksonkmarley··on Matrix web-based green code rain, made with love
It's also just a black screen on my android chrome browser.
jacksonkmarley··on Ask HN: How did you start higher education after 40?
Ongoing PhD at 40+ (EE). It turned into a bit of an endurance event in the end. Covid didn't help, but the supervisor attitude was a vital consideration that I didn't really take enough notice of going in.

Also I wouldn't even consider doing it without a proper full-time wage as part of the deal, so you can just concentrate without having to worry about other work etc.

jacksonkmarley··on Guidance to make federally funded research freely available without delay
Making scientific publications open access (at least for those chasing 'respected' publications) is usually achieved by paying a large amount of money up-front to publishers. Is the implementation of this policy just to make researchers/institutions pay this extra money when they publish?
jacksonkmarley··on How to pay your rent with your open source project (2020)
In my experience these "mountains of money" are not freely available to developers who need to get permission for spending it from their team-leader-with-a-budget. But YMMV I guess, lucky you!
jacksonkmarley··on American Airlines agrees to purchase Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft
Ok I'm assuming the parent was a typo (???). And the original is "all hat, no cattle" I guess, but I feel like I've heard the saying "all hat, no cat", is that a thing? Because there was a cat in a hat, and it rhymes, so it basically still works as a saying.
jacksonkmarley··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
If anything I found they notified too early, making it seem like you were about to lose all your stuff when there were months remaining until the renew date.
jacksonkmarley··on Essential Climbing Knots
That first knot needs a short video I think, no idea how to do it from the steps.
jacksonkmarley··on Mary Schmich's “Wear Sunscreen”, which turned into an unlikely 90s hit (2019)
> never go to Adelaide - it's a hole

It's funny because it's true.

jacksonkmarley··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
After my EE degree, every time an article came out about the 'shortage' of electrical engineers, we would all look at each other and snort and ask "has anyone landed a job doing real EE?", and the answer was always a very small number of grads.

At least where I'm from, there is no shortage, it's all bullshit. Universities keep pumping out more EE grads than are needed. I guess it keeps supplies high.

jacksonkmarley··on Ask HN: What exactly is a mindfulness meditation?
> I spent many years learning about different ways and schools of meditation. Not professionally but as one of hobbies constantly running in the background. And I still don’t get it.

If you didn't get it after years of trying why not just stop? Maybe it is useful to some people, but you are not one of them.

jacksonkmarley··on What does a batsman see? (2018)
Nice narrative-style intro to this, Greg Chappell curing his batting with introspection.

Amazing that a top-class batter sees the details of the ball to the extent of the direction of spin as it approaches, and assumes everyone can. As a poor player who nevertheless had good eyesight I only ever had a vague idea of where the ball was, let alone seeing it clearly.

jacksonkmarley··on Ask HN: What's the coolest website you know?
So this is clearly amazing, but on the topic of page design for my future reference, can any frontend people tell me whether there is an effective way to avoid the 'i want to scroll but interacted with the graphic' effect?
jacksonkmarley··on How to Do a Handstand
This article had 2 very noticeable features.

1) It was incredibly full of fluff. The actual content was actually not unuseful, it made me want to start practicing handstands, but the whole thing could have been quite brief without all the memes and marketing.

2) The gifs of the exercises (not the memes) were far superior for a reader compared with embedding, or worse linking, youtube videos. They did both here but I was already in skimming mode from all the fluff. I've read a lot of articles on gym stuff lately and it's pretty annoying having to repeatedly scan through 20 min videos for a 5 second demonstration.

jacksonkmarley··on Y Combinator for Mittelstands?
I think this is quite confusing because the word 'Mittelstand' is repeatedly used in a way that doesn't seem consistent with its usual meaning.
jacksonkmarley··on How do you power a rocket engine?
Awesome detailed answer! Much appreciated.
jacksonkmarley··on How do you power a rocket engine?
Wouldn't the pressurant/backfill gas dilute the propellant as it was added?
jacksonkmarley··on NIST-F1 Cesium Fountain Atomic Clock
Usually something with good short-term stability, e.g. a hydrogen maser, generates a steady signal that can then be measured against a frequency reference such as a caesium fountain, and the output can be adjusted to correct for frequency drift.
jacksonkmarley··on Developers of small modular reactors hope their time has come
There is currently still no licensed long term storage site for high-level waste in the world. That is amazing really. I consider that a major issue, even if the barriers are mostly political rather than technical.
jacksonkmarley··on Moving money internationally
The main crypto exchanges blocked the accounts of sanctioned individuals, does that hamper their ability to use their crypto assets constructively?
jacksonkmarley··on What happened to Russias Air Force? U.S. officials, experts stumped
> Their options seem to be (a) beat a hasty retreat; (b) impose a bloody total subjugation of the population; (c) face a decades-long insurgency that will bleed them dry.

maybe the plan is: d) cut ukraine in half, let a weaker and beaten 'neutral' western Ukraine be the new NATO buffer, and eastern Ukraine is annexed?

jacksonkmarley··on Show HN: I made a web game called Almost Pong
Cool.

Would be handy if the main page indicated which games were mobile capable so you didn't have to click through to find out.

jacksonkmarley··on Audiblegate
> How do you all focus on the material if you're doing other things?

I listen when what I am doing does not require conscious thought. Driving a car, going for a walk, repetitive exercise.

Also, I can actually focus on a somewhat dry topic better if I have something mentally undemanding going on in the background, I don't get bored as easily.

In fact in many cases listening to an audio book while e.g. driving makes both pastimes better than they would be alone.

jacksonkmarley··on Department Press Briefing – February 3, 2022
Sounded like the guy had just heard so much stuff he considered pure bullshit, that he just ran out of suspension of disbelief.

As far as really important stuff (perhaps this isn't a good example?), they could actually just reveal everything, after all having an informed public seems pretty important in a democratic society. Does that ever happen? Get all the secret agents out and just blow the lid? It would have to be going-to-war level stuff though.

jacksonkmarley··on Self-improvement is embracing your messy, imperfect life
If you can give up on solving the problems in your life and still lead a good life, maybe you are quite lucky.

But fighting to change yourself and improve may not be something people can or should just give up on if the consequences of not changing are sufficiently serious.

jacksonkmarley··on Toxic culture is driving the great resignation
> I know a number of people who are just DONE with with covid culture, and just want to get away from it.

What do you mean? What is "covid culture", and how do you get away from it?

jacksonkmarley··on The purpose of DRM is not to prevent copyright violations (2013)
Sometimes I think it's the copyright holding companies spamming downloaders with these crappy versions to gaslight them into thinking the official versions are always better.
jacksonkmarley··on Wish HN: Happy Holidays
Today had some really good threads, I ended up bookmarking a couple for later.
jacksonkmarley··on How a Kalman filter works, in pictures
Thanks for the suggestion!
jacksonkmarley··on How a Kalman filter works, in pictures
> Unfortunately for me, the intuitive part of Kalman filters is easy, but I don't have nearly the kind of grasp of Linear algebra I would need to implement one (I think).

This is me, anyone got a good linear algebra resource to recommend? Ideally one that addresses 'I took linear algebra ages ago in uni but it didn't really stick'.
