iszomer··on Why I’m Cryptophobic
Technology exports and the buying or licensing of American IP I guess?
iszomer··on Notkia: Linux phone in the shape of Nokia, with LoRa + WiFI + BT connectivity
Then there's WiPhone [0] which was previously talked about a few years ago [1]. A LoRa module is sold separately as an addon too.

iszomer··on Ask HN: What's Your Personal Motto?
Whatever goes around, comes around.
iszomer··on AMD doubles the number of CPU cores it offers to Chromebooks
Not always. My recently deceased Thinkpad 13 chromebook with an Intel 3855U held up despite lacking support for multithreading. My HP Mini 311 with an N270 played HL2 and CS pretty well for a single core processor (yes, the Nvidia ION helped).

Currently rocking a Lenovo chromebook Flex 5i with an i3-1115G4 and it's outperforming my phone's Snapdragon 845 in rendering video animations by a reasonably well margin.

iszomer··on Ask HN: Has anyone come up with a use for blockchain yet?
Especially for those whom don't understand borders and their implications.

iszomer··on AMD Fires Back with 7 New Chips
Succinctly put better than I could've articulated, thank you.
iszomer··on AMD Fires Back with 7 New Chips
Kinda' goes to show the resourcefulnes of salvaging for repurposement based on yields right? Sort of reminds me of the now ancient Black Edition releases with unlockable cores with a big fat YMMV sticker on top.
iszomer··on AMD Fires Back with 7 New Chips
If your OEM really does provide an update to the BIOS to accomodate the 5000 then it sounds like a relatively good incremental upgrade path.

I currently have a 2600 paired with an X370 and have been meaning to try APUs and play around with passthroughs more with the RX580.

iszomer··on Cascade: Open-source Node-based image editor with GPU-acceleration
Which iirc, is contextually referred to as visual programming. Some notable examples I've briefly used include: PureData [0] and SunVox [1] and some dabbling in Bespoke Synth [2] and generative content of Nodes.io [3].

iszomer··on Mavis Beacon was the top typing teacher in the US, then she vanished
Are you sure it wasn't all about the APM and macros? :)

I remember briefly learning to type from a Mavis Beacon book but practicing on those clicker mechanical keyboards drove my parents nuts!

iszomer··on Electric fields, not individual neurons, may hold information in memory: study
Depressed by design.
iszomer··on Finnish govt agency warns of unusual aircraft GPS interference
Always seeking to understand human behavior, when people say things to justify their otherwise contradictory actions. A simpler example would be reading HN from your own voice and not properly conveyed by others as human emotions are most often sterilized in text form.
iszomer··on Apple AirTags draining battery of devices close by
I use an app network firewall and restrict via whitelist of what I want to use on cellular data or fixed wifi (mobile hotspots are tricky).
iszomer··on Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant more dangerous than first thought
Literally a power play, pun intended?
iszomer··on Possible Outcomes of the Russo-Ukrainian War and China’s Choice
Thought they already are and to be settled in Euros and not the petrodollar.

iszomer··on Finnish govt agency warns of unusual aircraft GPS interference
What's more interesting is the deployment of certain radio jammers at airports [1] to dissuade drone operators from flying their toy into restricted airspace.

Going on a different tangent, I watched an interesting video [1] from The Behavior Panel podcast attempting to discern tactics from Putin's social cues in parallel to the trustworthiness of his messaging and, whether the historical context he provided were reliable or not.

I think I can reasonably conclude from watching their perspective that he's masterful in deception.

iszomer··on Twitter's new Tor onion service
Maybe they want to improve their fingerprinting heuristics by providing an illusion of anonymous communications over Tor? /shrug
iszomer··on Is the U.S. Descending into Recession?
Or fasting, in religious observance or a health cleansing strategy. We'll never know for sure unless GP provides more details.
iszomer··on Over 200 Companies Have Withdrawn from Russia – But Some Remain
That's a long list. I didn't think much at the time when TSMC decided to stop shipments but BlackRock and Bank of China "curtailing Russian access to capital markets"? Even TikTok is suspending operations..
iszomer··on iMac G4 to M1 conversion process
Mini-ITX modding culture came a long way. Last I saw was someone revamping a Hot Wheels PC from the 90's with modern parts [2].

Yep, I remember spending far too much time reading kuro5hin.
iszomer··on Moscow says it will let Ukrainian civilians flee – to Russia
Isn't depopulating a strong buzzword? I guess in a different context covid19 could be used in the same way; all the drama in censorship of alternative therapeutics than shilling for big pharma..

Whataboutism aside, I watched an interesting recap [1] of Ukraine's history. Not sure if it's factually and objectively legitimate though.

iszomer··on ICANN's rejection of Ukraine's request to sever Russia from the internet [pdf]
I think a better question to ask would be `Cui bono`, from an individual, group, and macro perspective.
iszomer··on Ukrainians say hackers used local government sites to spread fake news
My cynical take: Well, "when the Ukraine government called for hackers to defend against Russia" you thought you wouldn't be inviting others with different persuasions to pile in on the chaos? The fog of war is a real thing.

iszomer··on Write plain text files
I'm a Joplin user but I've been slowly learning Obsidian too. Level1Techs [0] did a fantastic primer on Obsidian and gave a thoughtful reflection on the zettelkastan method [1]. Josh Duffney's youtube channel [2] on Obsidian is also worth the watch too.
