intoverflow2··on Tumblr’s Unclear Future
Yet only 6000 followers and very few of his tweets break into double figures of likes...

Shouting 70 thousand times into a void doesn't actually make you a participant.

>a miniature rock that has nothing to offer to a space faring race?

I'd think a truly space faring race would probably have very different goals to us and the currency of culture would be much more valuable than natural resources which surely are abundant if space travel is trivial to you. Looking at it that way we'd have a hell of a lot to offer.

intoverflow2··on Blue Apron, Struggling to Woo Investors, Lowers Price Range for IPO
>I have never seen what value Blue Apron provides,

Its it's not a food product it's a lifestyle product.

As a food product it's no different from buying cheap prechopped supermarket produce and throwing it in a pan. Saves a few minutes or an hour a week at the expense of having to be at home to get the delivery.

As a lifestyle product it's an effortless way to feel like you are cooking for yourself, being healthier, not shovelling readymeals or takeaway food into your mouth so you feel better about yourself. Also the fact you pay quite a lot for it gives you incentive to actually follow the routine.

intoverflow2··on Sega releasing every console game for free with ads on mobile
Get a PSVita instead it's a ridiculously underrated handheld and will be going cheap these days.

But as it was a young kid we're talking about I think it's safe to say there will be something on Nintendo that they're into.

My main point was more just you really do get what you pay for and if these things on iPads bother you then please vote with your wallets and buy products from companies that actually care about quality of their software.

intoverflow2··on Sega releasing every console game for free with ads on mobile
Wheres the tipping point for when the product offering is enough for it to be ok to be supported by ads and data?
intoverflow2··on Sega releasing every console game for free with ads on mobile
Actually I will say one thing, maybe not on their iOS releases but for their recent 2D sonic remakes on consoles they actually hired from the Sonic fangame community (Christian Whitehead IIRC) to rewrite the engines and they run ridiculous good.

So yeah for once the paid version was as good as a passion driven fan version.

intoverflow2··on Sega releasing every console game for free with ads on mobile
Another alternative is buy him a Nintendo handheld instead of an iPad. No ads, no dodgy content, quality games.
intoverflow2··on A new approach to text rendering
> "styling" is a concept that games don't have

I disagree. Look up how modern material systems work. There absolutely are analogous things going on to CSS in PBR rendering, shaders, multipass compositing etc.

Although this is good news for pro Mac users it's still not that meaningful in an age were CUDA still dominates for almost anything you'd want to use this power for in an iMac (You're not going to want to mine ETH or compute ML inside an iMac chassis so I'm thinking more visual work).

Speaking as someone from the creative professional side I waited and waited for OpenCL to take off I thought a year after the trashcan pro with it's dedicated compute GPU (only one of the two GPUs was for display the other was 100% OpenCL) then nothing, I waited two years then nothing, etc. Then eventually I caved and moved to PC just for the Nvidia like most of people in my industry [1] [2] [3]

3D and motion graphics people are leading the way with this but look into the tech Adobe is prototyping and the future of photo manipulation via ML, within the next 5 to 10 years multiple GPUs as purely compute units will be essential for many creative professionals.

intoverflow2··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Resigns as C.E.O.
> more of an annoyance than anything truly worrying

I'd certainly be pretty worried if someone in a position of power over me was doing anything of the sort. Even if you don't have to worry about the individual literally overpowering you (Which in itself would be a tough thing to prove you were not the aggressor if you are a muscular 6+ footer and had to push off an aggressive advance)

intoverflow2··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Resigns as C.E.O.
The drivers don't suddenly cease to exist when Uber shuts down.
intoverflow2··on The Diary of an Ex-Tesla Intern
Honestly don't understand who has upvoted this, it's just a PR fluff piece.
intoverflow2··on Show HN: Revert the Twitter UI changes
It's honestly pretty much the same UI anyway. Totally just feels like a CSS hack on the web side.
intoverflow2··on The Konami exodus
It's awful his IP (Not just MGS but ZOE, Snatcher and Policenauts) will be locked up in a company with zero respect for it.

But the man is so prolific and Kojima Productions is clearly serious business, it'll probably mean his next projects have the potential to be his best yet.

intoverflow2··on The Konami exodus
> Otherwise I don't know of other console or pc game projects of theirs.

They don't need to, Pachinko (their newer machines use fox engine it seems) exists.

intoverflow2··on The Konami exodus
Zombies are not OK with the guy who was the main creative force behind the entire series so you can try and argue the rest of the series is just as ridiculous but if Kojima says they have no place in it then they have no place in it.

This isn't a series like Assassins Creed, Final Fantasy or even Star Wars where countless people have had their hands on the lore this is a single creatives vison.

intoverflow2··on Facebook’s Safety Check is a stress-inducing flip of social norms
> Was there a time, and if so was this throwaway FB account part of it, when you could only sign up to Spotify with a FB account?

Yes from the early beta Spotify had it's own account system, then it switched to all new accounts must be FB but legacy accounts could still sign in. This was a while ago though around the time I stopped using it.

intoverflow2··on Facebook’s Safety Check is a stress-inducing flip of social norms
> a major natural disaster that left me an evacuee for months

Honestly I'd have thought this situation would call for a lot more than an "I'm ok" checkbox. Something like the recent London terror attacks (disaster in a public place, not just one specific building) seems a decent fit for I'm ok but a disaster where you lose your home seems like the opposite of ok.

intoverflow2··on Tim Cook Says Apple Is Focusing on an Autonomous Car System
>Apple is a luxury brand

is it? Doesn't look that way when you think about the iPhone and iPad market shares.

intoverflow2··on Tim Cook Says Apple Is Focusing on an Autonomous Car System
Bothers me that Apple invests it's time on this.

Honestly if Apple disappeared tomorrow someone else would manage to fill this car gap just fine. But if Apple disappeared tomorrow who would fill the gap their computer hardware and OS left?

Windows is getting slowly better but I don't think it will ever truly manage to be as slick as OS X. Especially when the passionate Windows insist on using an 8 year old OS and devs insist on writing software using the same systems and libraries they were using 15+ years ago.

To me Apple is only valuable as a computer company, an Apple car would just be a toy for the super rich.

I do wonder if this project came about as a way to keep talent in the building?

They still make annoying noises over Skype calls too. Have to tell one of the remotes on my team to mute often.
intoverflow2··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
>On the other hand, working in an office is a sort of work tax too

On yet another hand working in an office and having to deal with remote workers is also a tax on the local workers productivity.

Lost count of the number of times I've had to take time out of my work schedule to VC with remotes to solve misunderstandings that would never have happened if they were working in the same room.

Company I work at also has several people who have remote worked from the very early days and don't seem to understand the entire culture of the place and workflow has changed which throws spanners in the works at times.

intoverflow2··on An introduction to Wayland
> but it kills me when I see tearing and flickering in X11 windows

Honestly don't think this will ever be solved in the open source world. It rarely even gets solved in the commercial world unless there is an internal design team involved who have enough power to force the dev team to solve these things. Win 10 for example has some silky smooth transitions but then you resize an explorer window and it flickers black.

So many people don't even seem to notice it but for some of us it's nails on a chalkboard.

One of the reasons 3D artists who are using GPU rendering generally go for liquid cooling (that and it makes the cards single slot)

I'm shocked how Pintrest gets away with spamming Google images with dead end links to sign up forms as an on-boarding mechanism.

I search images these days and I click a result only to be thrown into a Pintrest on-boarding flow and unable to get the image I wanted.

Honestly think they should be banned from Image Search results.

intoverflow2··on Ghost in the Shell FUI Design
Thing is the original succeeds in all this and feels as fresh today as it did on release. The 2017 version feels entirely unnecessary.

(Yes I understand all the reasons commercially why it was remade, no those don't change my opinions on the matter.)

intoverflow2··on Ghost in the Shell FUI Design
I disagree, although they created a beautiful vision of the future it just doesn't resonate with what GITS is to me.

The world of GITS never felt like a neon billboard strewn "Neo Tokyo", felt like it has always had a wider visual language than just that one note. Feels like the city is trying to demand presence as an entity in the remake while in the originals the city was mostly just an anonymous sea of sky scrapers that was then experience though more intimate close moments.

I realise Ash is a huge fan of Akira and I can't help but think how Neo-Tokyo plays almost as a larger than life character in that film has influenced his work in this.

Can't run Photoshop, Illustrator or zBrush on it.

Wacom has nothing to worry about from Apple.... MS on the other hand though.
