interstice··on People kept working, became healthier while on basic income: report (2020)
If you asked me what I would spend a 'free' 10k on at 15, 25 or 35 I would have given you radically different answers. I don't expect what someone does with basic income at 65 to have much relation to what they would do at other stages in life.
interstice··on GitHub CEO: manual coding remains key despite AI boom
> Modern high-end transformers have no problem producing code, while benefiting from a wealth of knowledge that far surpasses any individual.

It will also still happily turn your whole codebase into garbage rather than undo the first thing it tried to try something else. I've yet to see one that can back itself out of a logical corner.

interstice··on Ask HN: Is AI 'context switching' exhausting?
As stated too vague to be interpretable, I agree. The theory isn't novel either, it's well known that easier to use = less engaged, What's less clear but still somewhat well discussed is semi automated = lower quality & more mistakes.

In future I wouldn't mind doing both, since I could be driving and a passenger in multiple contexts with less overhead. Currently attempting to work this way is painful due to the aformentioned switching.

interstice··on Ask HN: Is AI 'context switching' exhausting?
Dopamine makes sense, since its kind of switching between 'sources' of Dopamine, like one is a sugar rush and the other is slow release like reading a book.

At the moment I have a bit of a tick tock where I'll vibe code to a point, get frustrated when it gets stuck on something I can fix myself in a minute or two. Then switch off using AI entirely for a while until I get bored of boilerplate and repeat the cycle.

interstice··on Ask HN: Is AI 'context switching' exhausting?
This resonates, even though copy pasting from Claude et al seems like it should be inefficient somehow it feels less prone to getting completely off track compared to leaving something like cursor or aider chat running.
interstice··on Should we design for iffy internet?
Some people like the clarity of dividing up sentences to avoid any possible misinterpretation.
interstice··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
I guess this comes down to whether you view what you get back for devoting most of a life to work as a negotiated agreement with government or as a one way street.
interstice··on Ask HN: Has anyone been able to overcome crippling executive dysfunction?
1) diagnose, are you burned out or depressed, or adhd etc? Then 2) treat accordingly, concerta and sleep does wonders for me
interstice··on What If Every Picture You've Ever Seen Already Exists?
I wonder if this could be done with some kind of seed generation (as in minecraft), but it sounds like magical thinking to have a seed and generator anywhere near small enough to not just contain all the data anyway.
interstice··on The Meritocracy to Eugenics Pipeline
Lucky because you could work harder or lucky because you didn’t have to?
interstice··on What If Every Picture You've Ever Seen Already Exists?
Dying is a pretty extreme length to go to for a hoax
interstice··on ChatGPT may be polite, but it's not cooperating with you
Ah yes three things you get from a training corpus consisting of blogs and stack overflow posts. I’m frankly surprised it doesn’t say closing this question as off topic halfway through a chat.
interstice··on Why do LLMs have emergent properties?
The bag of heuristics thing is interesting to me, is it not conceivable that a NN of a certain size trained only on math problems would be able to wire up what amounts to a calculator? And if so, could that form part of a wider network, or is I/O from completely different modalities not really possible in this way?
interstice··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
I like this! Have thought of it for both bikes and cars, I drive manual and occasionally just downchange coming up to lights or off motorways. Also used to have a zx636 and bought an LED brake light that flashed obnoxiously when triggered (F1 style), I like to think the safety it added offset how annoyed I was probably making everyone behind me.
interstice··on The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything
This is curiously specific, does this happen a lot?
interstice··on AI Horseless Carriages
I have noticed that AI are optimising for general case / flashy demo / easy to implement features at the moment. This sucks, because as the article notes what we really want AI to do is automate drudgery, not replace the few remaining human connections in an increasingly technological world. Categorise my emails. Review my code. Reconcile my invoices. Do my laundry. Please stop focusing on replacing the things I actually enjoy about my job.
interstice··on Ask HN: Are You Polite to AI?
Default to please do x but trying to train myself out of it as I think it may change the result slightly, I haven’t tested that though.
interstice··on Minding the gaps: A new way to draw separators in CSS
Came here to say this too, the flexibility of having something like :after would mean not having to consider all the potential ways people are going to want to use this.

Not sure about content: though, that could get weird.

interstice··on When AI thinks it will lose, it sometimes cheats, study finds
In that case some of the imaginative behaviour is even _more_ impressive, wouldn’t you say?
interstice··on Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines? How to thrive in a ChatGPT world
Not quite, but it was the closest pithy quote I could think of to convey the point that things can be false for a long time before they are suddenly true without warning.
interstice··on Magnetic field sorting of superconducting graphite particles with Tc>400K (2024)
Possibly, but a lot of real progress has been made by trying things that turn out to work and then working backwards to figure out how.

interstice··on Pornhub pulls out of Florida, VPN demand 'surges 1150%'
We used proxies to get newgrounds in highschool around 2004, take from that what you will
interstice··on OpenAI o1 system card
o1 seems to have some crazy context length / awareness going on compared to current 3.5 Sonnet from playing around it just now. I'm not having to 'remind' it of initial requirements etc nearly as much.
interstice··on Project Sid: Many-agent simulations toward AI civilization
They might, but if youre simulating a group you can count group survival as part of the selection criteria.
interstice··on Relativty: An open-source VR headset for $200
Clicking through the parts list, somewhat wildly <10cm inch 2k displays appear to be available for <$50 now. After a quick look I can't find much north of that in terms of resolution, but surely there has to be _something_ between this and the SOTA 4k+ displays going in high end headsets. If those exist then the last major barrier I can think of to DIY is the magic lenses required to make those screens viable when <50mm from an eyeball.
interstice··on Project Sid: Many-agent simulations toward AI civilization
Does this mean that individual complexity is a natural enemy of group cohesiveness? Or is individual 'selfishness' more a product of evolutionary background.

On our planet we don't have ant colony dynamics at the physical scale of high intelligence (that I know of), but there are very physical limitations to things like food sources.

Virtual simulations don't have the same limitations, so the priors may be quite different.

interstice··on Ask HN: Where After WordPress?
I'm a Technical Director of a design/web agency (small scale, I still build one out of every 3 or so sites). We use Sanity + Next JS (or Sanity + Remix more recently) in a repeatable way. I used to use WP a long time ago, and even then I had my own setup to use twig templating, my own image resizing solution, etc.

I have been considering pouring energy into this problem or at least offering advice, our approach is definitely bespoke and not scalable in the way WP is, but I've long thought the middle ground is in need of ~something~.
