indescions_2017··on Tesla Roadster
Yes. It is only human to be worried. They lose money on every car they sell. And the losses are accelerating. If you bought $TSLA at $300. And are looking to hold on for dear life. The next 12-24 months is gut check time.

But there is so much to be optimistic about! Uber or Lyft or Didi could place 100K size orders of Model 3s for their driverless fleets, with substantial support contracts, by 2019. Powerwalls may become standard components in emerging market power grids in the global sun belt. And envisioning charging stations as travel lounges or overnight rest stops is a stealth real estate and hospitality investment.

Tesla is acting as if the Model 3 will change the game. My personal bias is that the analysts are neglecting the raw consumer demand for this brave new electrical world. And if that holds true, continuing to raise cash to finance their production via stock, debt or pre-orders shouldn't be the hard part. Especially if 12 month price targets in the $350-375 range hold ;)

indescions_2017··on Learn just enough Linux to get things done
Great list for starters. But getting real work done requires much more.

Having just walked through some basic steps with a novice, I can concur, modern linux is impossible without "recipes".

Just setting up a hello world web app can involve: ssh login to running instance, using curl to download the gcloud sdk, tar to unpack, sudo to install, systemctl to start local processes, useradd dedicated www, chmod and chroot to allow access, rsync to tranfer files, netcat to manage ports, etc.

For beginners, without a trusted hand to guide them, its beyond intimidating. These systems must become more accessible to the average human.

indescions_2017··on Code together in real time with Teletype for Atom
This one single feature could potentially have the largest impact on my workflow in 2018. As much as I love async task management. Real-time collaboration with remote team members should be fascinating ;)
indescions_2017··on Ask HN: What is your weirdest secret YouTube addiction?
B Roll. This is the behind the scenes footage Hollywood studios provide. PR for a film. Usually spliced in when broadcasting a celebrity interview to give "atmosphere".

But I find the mega budget production aspects fascinating. Seeing the million dollar DaVinci Resolve boards. The robotic Oculus camera cranes. As well as the intricate stunt choreography and wire work for Guardians 2. The massive alien ship interior sets for Arrival. The ballroom in Beauty and the Beast.

Another recent good one: Murder on the Orient Express. Istanbul's Sirkeci Rail Station. And a snow bound cliff outside Vincovci. All recreated on London sound stages. And shot in vintage large format Panavision 65mm analog film cameras ;)

indescions_2017··on Confession as an AI researcher; seeking advice
I think this is fairly common first-year grad student emotional response. And quite frankly, it is the job of your mentor and department to ensure you receive sufficient training for an academic or research career.

Modern AI is evolving rapidly but there is a foundation upon which everyone draws upon. The Sutton and Barto book is one such foundational text.

Find a collaborator in the Math department to work with. And participate daily in stack overflow forums for math and stats, such as Cross Validated.

I can also recommend CASI by Efron and Hastie. Deep historical understanding of where we are today in probabilistic inference.

indescions_2017··on Lyft Set to Claim Third of U.S. Market in 2017
After $1B investment from CapitalG, Lyft may also go public before Uber:

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/20/new-york-times-digital-lyft-...

It will be very interesting if their two paths diverge. With Uber aggresively investing in autonomous systems, logistics and emerging markets. While Lyft provides its Open Platform to car manufacturers. And pivots to a more "experiential" consumer-centric culture and service.

indescions_2017··on The Church of the SubGenius Finally Plays It Straight
A great place to start might be reviving alt.binaries.slack. Or a countdown ticker for is-it-x-day-yet.com :)
indescions_2017··on Ask HN: How much did you sell your startup for?
Back of the envelope calculations ;)

Video pre roll ad rates ~$10 per 1000. Let's say you directly realize half of that. Or $50 per day. So $50K represents about 1000 days (3 years) of passive income, at zero growth. So its decent. Provided its offered in good faith. And you could use that capital to repeat your success in another related vertical. Say, popular music videos, that tend to get 10x viewership numbers.

Best of luck mattleblank!

indescions_2017··on I hate telephones
Face-time can be magical. Especially around the holidays. When clusters of your tribe gather in geographically disperse points. But you can still experience a simulacrum of "presence".

But author has a point about banks being particularly egregious offenders of phone dependency. They are progressing. With voice print and zelle. As well as iris scans. But I still need face to face in person meetings about once per month. And though face authenticated live full duplex video can serve as a proxy. Trust that is built from a personal connection may never be disrupted.

indescions_2017··on Weta Workshop – Blade Runner 2049
Cool stuff! Apparently Nolan's "Dunkirk" used a similar technique involving miniatures. Literally green plastic toy soldiers on the beach to recreate large assembled forces. No doubt, with enough texture and natural light this can look more cinematic than graphics ;)
indescions_2017··on Ask HN: What is the next hype (after ML)?
AI, Cloud, Robotics. Will continue to dominate the narrative in the four year time frame.

I've heard something like a quarter of venture capital is being allocated to consumer robotics. And it feels like society is reaching a tipping point. Where the hardware is becoming dependable enough that mainstream America is ready to allow robots in their homes en masse.

One interesting way to enter if you are a startup is to design a crucial component of the consumer robotics supply chain. Perhaps a remote sensing kit. Or modular battery system. But beyond the hype. There is enough substance here to get excited about this space and its transformative power.

indescions_2017··on Tell HN: Some thoughts on ten years on Hacker News
Once considered hiring an expert-level virtual assistant. Solely for the purpose of reading HN at regular intervals through the day. And preparing a presidential style daily briefing ;)
indescions_2017··on The Case for RSS
There was a brief "Golden Age". I want to say around 2005 or so. When you had a proliferation of MP3 music blogs such as "Hype Machine". All with distinctive curatorial voices and great taste. And all distributing their MP3s using RSS. Just the music. No ads, filler or other detritus.

And you could write your own little client program in like 100 lines of C#. That would aggregate all the various feeds. And download just the MP3 files overnight. Providing you with a tasty gigabyte-sized bouquet of rare bootlegs, unreleased demos, forgotten imports, and much more every morning.

Spotify playlists have supplanted that particular use case. But the design favors promotion. Pushing overlooked talent to the fore. And bubbling up gems that may have been subsumed in the volume of noise.

To find rarities, such as this classic R.E.M. set from the Paradise Theater in Boston, Summer '83 (where they opened for The Replacements). You have to stumble on it via Youtube. Or find a friend with an actual collection of old vinyl ;)

Strategically, its a good way for a Chinese consumer internet firm to enter into Western markets. As well as short form, digestible, interactive video optimized for mobile.

indescions_2017··on More than 1,000 websites are mining cryptocurrency with your browser
Web-mining for revenue generation is inevitably becoming a legitimate alternative to ad based streams. Especially on "torrents" sites, dark net markets and the like. Goes without saying, should be opt-in. But providing the users a choice: would you rather view a video ad, or use 50% of CPU to mine join a pool while your consume our content, I'd estimate more than half would choose to allow CoinHive to run. Naturally, these services are trivial to block as well.

For large sites (100M+ user per month), web mining revenue may be less than 10% of current ad monetization rates. But factoring in cryptocurrency appreciation and ability to quickly transact digitally and anonymously with mined coins, adds another dimension to the possibility space. Epect this trend to continue.

indescions_2017··on Billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Arrested in Corruption Crackdown
Hashtag #الملك_يحارب_الفساد trending on $TWTR right now. Which apparently translates as #King_Fights_Corruption.

Other Middle East events of note today. Lebanese PM Hariri resigns over Hezbollah security situation. Trump urges Saudi Aramco IPO on NYSE. ASEAN conference may include talks of a Qatari oil blockade. Yemen's Houthi-controlled air ministry fires a missile at the Riyadh airport, that was intercepted by the Saudis.

And now what appears to be a coup with a dozen members of the royal family charged with "corruption". Besides a consolidation of power, asset forfeiture, or other conspiracy theories. Wondering if any Arabic speakers may have a deeper insight as to timing of these remarkable event ;)

indescions_2017··on How Facebook’s Oracular Algorithm Determines the Fates of Startups
Good long read. With a real world example of a startup called Hubble Contacts pursuing their distribution strategy through Facebook ad microtargeting and Instagram promotions.

indescions_2017··on Evio – Fast event-loop networking for Go
I'd be interested in the level seven reverse proxy application. As well as unix domain socket message queues. There are probably many other places in the networking pipeline evio could provide a boost.

It's a testament to what is possible through the "syscall" and "golang/x/sys" facilities. As well as your confidence in playing with Linux internals ;)

indescions_2017··on Neugram – Scripting in Go
100% behind you on this, crawshaw. Although I've never missed having a Python style REPL for golang ("go run" usually fits the bill). You make a convincing argument for why it would indeed be a very powerful tool for any Linux admin's toolbox ;)

It's premature for feature requests I know. But I'd love to be able to view the Stack Trace of a live running goroutine. Typically something I log to disk using the "runtime" calls. To be able to probe that info from a command shell would be neat, don't you think?

indescions_2017··on Yes, but what does your startup do?
"Do" may be irrelevant if you are advising someone who is an expert in a particular vertical, in which you yourself have little experience or domain knowledge.

But if they state their model is Enterprise SaaS or Subscription-based Media Content. Then its easier to suggest a quick hack for training sales teams or where to find freelance editors online, etc.

indescions_2017··on Ask HN: Where do you go for political discussion with a somewhat good discourse?
